On Wednesday, March 11,1987, Detective Louis A Miller, A Field Training Officer with Neighborhood Stabilization Unit #10, Was working within the confines of the 70 Precinct. At noon of that day his unit, Comprised of himself and 3 rookie officers which he was training, Responded to a burglary call at 816 Ocean Avenue. Members of the 70 Precinct Robbery Unit were also responding to the call.Upon arrival Detective Miller directed two Officers to the Roof of the building, And two officers to the 5th floor, Where the crime was suppose to be in progress, While he and Officer Mark DelPino of the 70 Robbery Unit, Proceeded to the 4th floor, With the intention to walk up the Stairwell to the Crime Scene.
Upon exiting the Elevator Detective Miller and Officer DelPino confronted two men. Detective Miller began to question the men when they both produced handguns and began to fire. Detective Miller was Immeadiately struck in the Chest and stomach and Officer DelPino Fired 5 rounds Hitting one of the Men, Who slumped to the floor,His accomplice then fired at DelPino striking him in the Chest and shoulder. DelPino Dove for Cover and began to reload his weapon. Although Mortally wounded, Detective Miller Fired 6 shots at the Gunman killing him. He then stumbled over to Officer DelPino and said "I'am hit, I'am Hit bad!" Before falling to the ground. Both Cops were taken to Kings County Hospital were Miller was Pronounced Dead.
The Second gunmen Fled, Wounded by Officer DelPino, And after a short Car chase, Was arrested by Officers from the 67 Precinct. He was tried and found guilty, And sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Detective Miller is survived by his Wife, Veronica, and his Son David.
Detective Louis Miller became a Police Officer in 1953 and after nearly 20 years on Patrol, Was promoted to the Rank of Detective and assigned to the Field Training Unit. Louie trained almost 2 Thousand Rookies during his time with the NYPD. Louie could have been long retired or at least had a easy inside job, But those who knew him, Knew his favorite place was out on the Streets of New York City, Training his Rookies, Or as he called them, "My Kids". Louie cared deeply for his Rookies, And took great pride in them. His Rookies all looked up to him and emulated him as they would a father. Louie is a Legend in the NYPD, Something not easily achieved in this City. Although his Legacy lives on in the many Cops he trained, We all Miss him dearly.
Detective Miller was the first of 5 New York City Police Officers to be Killed in the Line of Duty in 1987. At 61 years old, Detective Miller is the Oldest New York City Police Officer to die in the Line of Duty.
Officer Mark DelPino Fully Recovered from his wounds, And was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during the shootout that claimed Detective Miller's life. He was later promoted to Detective, And still works in the 70th Precinct Robbery Unit. His Father, Edward DelPino, A retired NYPD Officer, was Given a medal only a year before for bravery, When he single handedly subdued a man with a sword who killed 2 people and wounded 9 others on a crowded Staten Island Ferry. Mark was wearing his fathers shield at the time of the shooting.
