Recommended Sites - Updated 8/16/02

These are people with whom I work, and
whose work I enjoy. These are NOT links to everybody
in the world in animation; there's enough of that on
other web sites. I can personally testify to the friendship
and cameraderie of these people. Tell them Tom Reed
sent you. (And that Tom Reed will be sending them the
next payment as soon as he can.) |

New! Updated! TOON Magazine
will be coming back in December. In the meantime, see
new articles on the web site you won't see anywhere
else. |

Animation World Net |
|
http://www.awn.com |
|
Animation World Network is a web site
that tries to handle the entire world of animation,
from advice for beginning artists to fan critiques to
news for professionals. It isn't as frantic or as regularly
updated as other sites, but it is about the only place
to hear professional news. You can also sign up for
a free headline update to be sent to your E-mail address,
or pay a small fee for their comprehensive weekly Flash
news report. Their Animation World Magazine is
updated regularly and is often available as an Adobe
Acrobat PDF file. |

SunQuest |
|
http://www.sunquestgames.com |
|
New! SunQuest is a group of friends in Florida who put
on professionally managed and operated fantasy gaming
conventions. For the uninitiated, that means games like
Dungeons & Dragons, Star Wars, Magic: The Gathering
and other games people play with other people. We run
conventions all year long, including The Games at MegaCon,
Florida's largest gaming and comics convention.
This new web site, created by the brilliant and talented
Jeff Graber, allows you to get info about SunQuest's
current conventions and lets you register as a player
or Judge for some of them.

Ms. Geek |

Michelle Klein-Hass, my editor on TOON
Insider Magazine, has a personal web site that talks
about being a young woman and a geek in the modern age.
At last look she hadn't had the time to update it, but
I'm sure it will happen soon.

Animation Blast! |

For over a year, my "Off Model" columns
appeared on Amid Amidi's animation web site. Amid is
trying to break into animation, and lives out there
in the citadel of power, Los Angeles. He's strongly
opinionated - more than me in some matters - but that's
bettter than wishy-washy any day. Give
his site a try, and you might also enjoy reading his
self-published magazine. (If he were really nice, he'd
give me a mutual link.)

Dragon*Con |
|
http://www.dragoncon.org |
|
Dragon*Con is the Southeast's largest science fiction
and fantasy convention. I've presented the "Pre-Sweetened
Playhouse" with American animation there.
Besides guests in science fiction, fantasy, comics and
anime, Dragon*Con features ass-kicking bands that play
late into the night. Their web site is kept up all year long,
and you can even get a free E-mail account through them.

MegaCon |
|
http://www.megaconvention.com |
|
MegaCon is Orlando's largest convention of comics,
collectibles, anime and media guests. As a Board Member
of SunQuest, I'm there every year to present and run
gaming. It's run by the people at CrossGen Comics, publishers
of comics that aren't all costumed heroes, such as Ruse (a
Sherlock Holmes-type detective running against magic)
and Mystic (a blend of magic and 1950's film
noir).

Ain't It Cool News |
|

A guy named Harry Knowles, while recovering
from crippling injuries, developed this web site with
"spies" breaking into movie sets, passing
along copies of scripts, and getting the word about
movies, TV and comics before anyone else. I have problems
with this site; there's too much ego and showoff attitude
presented by Knowles and his associate "Moriarty"
(who's really screenwriter Drew McWeeny, if even that
is his real name). But it's still important and interesting;
some pros read this site to find out what film fans
really think, or to find out if their scripts have been
sold. |

Bartcop |

This guy claims to have an IQ of 65,
but he's angry at the way big business and big politics
have ruined this country. He represents the liberal
view that used to exist in this country - not the rich,
unconnected New Yorkers, but the common man who wants
a fair shake. He updates the site daily, and supposedly
holds down a full-time job too. Perhaps it's that Mexican
lighter fluid called something like "Chinkagayho"
which he drinks all the time that gives him the energy.
I don't fully agree with him, but he's fun to watch. |
