Haney Residence

Chad and Ryan Haney are brothers, business partners, and now co-owners of a new house in the Dollar Point area of north Lake Tahoe, CA that’s drawing plenty of attention from neighbors and friends. “It’s a unique house,” says Chad Haney, who, with his brother, runs Haney Brothers, Inc., a landscaping and property management business. “During construction, a lot of people have stopped by to talk about it.”

The Haney brothers are young, active, and into the Lake Tahoe lifestyle, especially during ski season. They wanted a home that could accommodate both of them under one roof, but in which each could have his private life. So, naturally, they turned to their cousin, Damon Zumbrogel, of Figa Architecture, to create the perfect space for them.

Zumbrogel designed the home that has people talking. The 2,000 square foot house harmonizes with the natural beauty of its setting. Past a waterfall in the entryway, and surrounding an open space that rises to a twenty-foot ceiling in the center of the house, are traditional spaces including a guest bedroom and bathroom, living room, kitchen and dinning room. From this shared area of the house, a single stairway ascends halfway to the second floor. Here, Chad and Ryan’s separate lifestyles begin, as the single stairway splits off into two, each leading to a private master bedroom and bathroom.

But the feature of the house that’s most striking to passersby is the one above the master suites, the half barrel shaped arches of the roof. One arch faces one side of the house near the front, the other faces the opposite direction near the back. Under each arch is a sliding glass door that provides access from the bedrooms to individual decks. Those two decks lead to individual walking decks. The design represents the harmonious accommodation of the two separate lives in the home.

The Haney’s knew that the striking design of the roof had to be matched with the proper roofing system. For that, Chad and Ryan turned to their long-time friend, Caleb Turk, of Sierra Roofing. “We had considered a couple of different materials for the roof,” says Chad. “We mentioned to Caleb that we were thinking about a metal roof, or composite shingles.”

But Turk had a different idea. “As soon as I heard about the design of the roof, I immediately knew that IB Roof Systems’ membrane was the best option,” he says. He took into consideration the four deck area’s of the roof, amounting to 800 square feet. IB is the only system Sierra Roofing uses on low-pitched roofs. There’s a good reason for that. “It’s bombproof,” Turk says with a chuckle. “With another system, I knew I’d be back there making repairs within a couple of years. IB is a no-maintenance system.”

There was another feature of the IB system that made it especially attractive for the Haney roof. Until recently, except for large custom runs, IB Roof Systems has only produced membranes in white, tan and gray. This year, popular demand inspired the addition of three new colors: dark green, chocolate brown, and brick red. While IB’s 50 mil white membrane was ideal for the low-pitched portions of the roof, for the striking arch structures, Chad and Ryan Haney chose the aesthetically pleasing chocolate brown membrane, available in 80 mil.

IB Roof Systems requires all contractors who handle their products to complete an on-site training program before they can offer IB to consumers in their markets. Caleb Turk, of Sierra Roofing, has been an Authorized IB Installer for seven years. On both the low-pitched and arched portions of the Haney roof, Turk placed up to three layers of VersaShield® over the plywood substrate in order to achieve a class A fire protection rating. The IB membranes were mechanically attached using IB screws. Other IB custom accessories used on the job were wind uplift vents, pipe boots, and flashings for plumbing openings.

IB’s custom accessories make the application process go more quickly and easily, and they come in colors to match their membranes.

Turk used a handheld hot air welder, rather than a walker welder, to create the seams of the membrane. “The low-pitched areas were small enough that we could use a handheld welder,” he says. “And the arches got pretty steep, so we couldn’t really use a walker welder up there.”

Chad Haney is pleased with the way the roof turned out. “I dig it,” he says. “I like the way it looks.”

But the beauty of this roof is much more than skin deep. In a heavy snowfall area like Lake Tahoe, climate is a concern. Dick Bishop, IB’s sales rep covering the Lake Tahoe area, points out that the acrylic finish on the IB membrane allows snow to slide off easily, an important feature for homeowners in such areas.

The fact that IB membranes now come in darker colors is another feature that cold-climate homeowners can warm up to. “For years we’ve been promoting white, white, white because it’s very energy efficient and environmentally friendly,” says Jason Stanley of IB Roof Systems. IB’s traditional white and light colored membranes reflect heat and keep roofs, and the homes under them, cooler. But in the Lake Tahoe winter, a darker membrane is ideal for its ability to absorb heat.

With a little help from their friends and relatives, it all came together for the Haney brothers. Beautiful design, great materials, and fine construction mean that Chad and Ryan can live their individual lives together under one fantastic roof.
