1997 HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

REGIONAL CONFERENCE


The 1997 Annual HABITAT FOR HUMANITY South Central regional conference was held November 14 and 15, 1997 at the Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. Over 500 HABITAT Homeowners, Board Members, Staff and other volunteers from Kentucky and Tennessee attended, making this the largest conference ever held in this region. HABITAT's co-founders Millard and Linda Fuller were present. On Friday night, Millard Fuller gave a most inspirational talk to the assembled attendees. Earlier in the day, Knox County HFH completed their 100th house; Millard and Linda were present to dedicate it. Millard was also interviewed by a local TV station, and spoke to the University of Tennessee Habitat Campus Chapter. Several VISION 2013/HFH Partnership leaders were present at the conference. Attending were M. W. Grand Master John Palmer, Deputy Grand Master R. W. Brother Walter Wininger, his wife Sister Otta Lee, Task Force Chairman W. Brother Tom Boduch (Grand Marshal) and his wife Betty. Otta Lee Wininger serves on the Hawkins County HFH fund raising committee; Betty Boduch serves on the same committee for Roane County HFH.

Dan WelchBrother Dan Welch (shown at left), Middle Tennessee Task Force Member, conducted workshops on Golf Marathon fund raising activities. Brother, Dan who is currently serving as Senior Steward of Hiram Lodge #7 in Franklin, has already worked with 4 Tennessee HABITAT affiliates. In District 20, efforts are underway for the first HFH house sponsored and built by our Masonic family. Several leaders of this project were also present at the conference including District 20 Chairman Brother Johnny Stooksbury, his wife (and 'secretary of the year') Sister Glenda, Knox County co-chairman Tom Hudgens, his wife Sister Marlene. Representing Oriental Lodge #453 were District 20 Officer's association president Bart Iddins, Senior Warden Eric Tuck, and Senior Deacon Barry Iddins. Representing Blazing Star Lodge #455 (Union County) was brother Billy Hill (Past Master and Secretary). The Grand Master's Historian Brother Bobby Demott, his wife Bea (see photo below right) and Brother James Pointer also attended. Bobby and Bea Demott Also present were several brethren who are serving as leaders of Tennessee HABITAT affiliates, including Brother Aubin Lovin, president of Cocke County HFH, and member of Millington Lodge #671. Brother Ernest'doc' McConnell (shown below left) Past Master of Overton Lodge #5 and Hawkins County HFH Treasurer. and Brother Henry Wattenbarger, oldest living Past Master of Union Lodge #38 who has worked as a construction volunteer on most of the HFH houses built by Roane County HFH. The brethren also met with Millard Fuller, HFH's founder and Nasvhille based Mr. Jim Crowley, HFH South Central Regional director, (photo below) both of whom expressed their gratitude and appreciation for our Vision 2013-HABITAT Partnership.
