Visual Development Of Infants

Infant Vision Development
Four To Six Months
...    ...

At the age of four to six months an infant should now begin to turn from side to side and use their arms and legs. At this age the infant's ability to accurately accommodate or focus their eyes at various distances should be well developed. This is also an important period in the development of accurate eye-hand coordination.

The infant's eyes should continue to become more mobile and move with little head movement. The infant should display such behavior as watching more distant objects and more actively inspecting their immediate surroundings. This should include such actions as looking at their bottle while feeding and their hands and feet while sitting.

Several things that can be done at home to help your infant continue to successfully develop their visual skills include:

- Allow exploration of different textured and shaped objects and toys.
- Hang objects across the crib for hand-eye coordination.
- Use brightly colored toys that squeak or rattle to provide stimuli.
- Play games such as "peek-a-boo" with toys or faces.
- Play games such as "patty cake" requiring hand-eye coordination.
- Continue using only baby safe and comfortable bathroom products.
- Use adequate and comfortable lighting in the infant's bedroom.
