| Conjunctivitis, often called "red eye" or "pink eye", is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent layer covering the surface of the eye and inner eyelids. This condition appears in many forms and affects individuals of all ages. Conjunctivitis may be caused by bacteria, allergies, or chemical irritants. Certain forms of conjunctivitis can develop into more serious conditions which can harm the eye, therefore, it is important diagnose and treat promptly. Infectious forms of conjunctivitis can be very contagious. It is important to keep clean hands and not to touch the eyes in any way. Sharing such things as towels, washclothes, cosmetics, and eyedrops should also be avoided to prevent spreading infections. If the conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria it is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops and/or antibiotic oinments. Conjunctivitis caused by allergies and other irritants are treated with removal of the cause of the reaction. That is, to identify and avoid further contact with the irritant. The symptoms and discomfort of this condition can be relieved with such things as increased lid hygeine, artificial tears, and over-the-counter eyedrops. Some signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis in a child may include: - Red / bloodshot eyes.
