New Albany Girls Soccer Program Philosophy

OUR team resembles a family and We will do whatever it takes to make

our family successful. Everyone in a family has roles and

responsibilities. These roles and responsibilities will be made clear and

trust and communication will keep us all working towards the

betterment of our family. Soccer is FUN and players and parents must

never loose sight of the joy that goes along with the beautiful game.

Players will play to win – but not play to win at all costs – learn the

exhilaration of victory – and handle adversity with dignity and courage.

We will ALWAYS leave the field knowing this TEAM did everything it could to win.

If we can say this – our program will soar to new heights.

Being on this team is an honor and a privilege.

Expectations for the New Albany Girls

Soccer Players

ALL players arrive on Time – For Everything!

ALL players clean up the field. We are a team and we all work together –

on everything. This is regardless of grade level.

NO ONE is above carrying equipment, getting water, cleaning up the field,

being held accountable to our team rules and working hard.

ALL players will thank parents for any effort they make to contribute to

our success.

ALL players will be listening and respectful during pre-game talks. You

will have time to get dressed – pre-game talk is not the time.

Negativity towards Coaches, Referees, Parents, Staff, and OUR PROGRAM

will not be tolerated. We will only do well if we all hang together as a

family.

If we do not hang together, we shall surely all hang separately

Ben Franklin - after making a strong commitment to our country

If you do not practice – you do not play. (See team rules for specifics)

ALL players will challenge each other, support each other, push each

other, and respect each other – NO ONE is bigger than our TEAM.

1 player can never take the place of 10. The only way you will get better is by making the players around you better.

ALL players will walk together as a TEAM before a match out to the park.

They will then set their bags in a neat manner behind our bench.

Captains will introduce themselves to the referee and thank them – next -

the opposing coach and wish them good luck.

If you can buy into these changes – Welcome Home

The culture of our team is

ACCOUNTABILITY & TEAMWORK

Parental Support

As a teacher at New Albany High School and through working with the team, I can safely say that we have the greatest group of kids in central Ohio. This can only happen because of one place – the home.

As a parent of young children and an educator of ten years, I can appreciate and see all that you have done in order to make your children the awesome kids that they are today.

Thank you!

I feel that the parents and the community are the link for our success. If you would like to volunteer – for anything – please do!

I want parental support and the girls want it as well. Be your daughter’s greatest fan!

I will provide a sign up sheet as we near the season. Please see what you can do and let me know. We are in this together.

I would like to ask a favor of all parents.

Please let the Head Coach and the New Albany staff handle the coaching for our New Albany Eagles.

I would like to ask that we all set a positive tone for the season. Your support of the program, your children and the coaches will help with our team’s success.

Please only make positive remarks to your children concerning our program and their hard work. Negativity will destroy our team. Support and encouragement will make us all better.

Please feel free to contact me on any issues or concerns you may have.

Thank you!!

Interval Training

We will base our conditioning on Interval Training. Soccer is a sport that demands quick starts and stops, sudden acceleration, change of direction, anaerobic fitness and aerobic fitness. Interval training will be the method that we use in order to prepare for the demands of the game.

Set up a schedule where you have a break between workdays.

Below are a few examples of interval training activities. I have listed exercises that can be done on indoors on a treadmill or, even better, on a soccer field with a friend.

Sears Method – P.A.C.E

Treadmill – 5 K Distance (3 miles)

      1. Warm up – 2 min. light jog

                 2. Set tread mill for a jog – e.g. 5mph

 3. After ¼ mile – go to 6mph

 4. After ¼ mile at 6mph – go back to

5mph for ¼ mile

5. Next ¼ mile go to 7mph

6. Back down to 5 etc.

Outdoor 5k Distance (3 miles)

The same idea applies as with the (See the chart below)

treadmill. Yet – you will be using

landmarks for sprint zones.

¼ mile @ 5mph

¼ mile @ 6mph

¼ mile @ 5mph

¼ mile @ 7mph

¼ mile @ 5mph

¼ mile @ 8mph

¼ mile @ 5mph

¼ mile @ 9mph

¼ mile @ 5mph

¼ mile @ 10mph

¼ mile @ 5mph – finish 5k @ 5mph

The mph should be based on your

ability level – you can start at 3mph

and end at 8mph. Yet – it will not

help you unless you are pushing

yourself!!

Set up either cones or landmarks

for a 5k run.

Examples:

Cones

Set up 5 “Sprint Zones” in a field. Jog

in any pattern you wish. When you hit

a sprint zone the first time – sprint at

20% effort. Next 40%

By the 5th zone you should be pushing

yourself with everything you have. If

you do not leave this panting – you are

not doing it correctly.

Landmarks

Same as above – but use natural

landmarks for “Sprint Zones” Like

telephone poles, cars etc.

Self-Coach Activities

and Fitness Tests

These areas will be a focus for our summer sessions

A) Agility

B) Speed

C) Endurance

During our conditioning sessions over the summer you will be timed on

drills A and B

A) AGILITY

End

10 yards

Start

(Cones in middle are 1 yard apart)

A) This will be the agility

test you will be run

through on our Test Day.

We will take the best of

three times on TBA.

We will take the best of

three times on TBA to

gauge improvement.

Practice this drill and

the others below 3 times

per week. This will help

with agility, change of

direction, quickness and

endurance.

PRACTICE!! If you have

the desire to get better –

THEN MOTIVATE YOUR

SELF TO ACHIEVE YOUR

GOALS!!!!

B) SPEED

We will test your speed using the following three exercises.

1) Cafe start of 5 yds. – sprint 40 yards. Best of three times

2) Speed at angles. Standing start, sprint 15 yards, cut left 15 yards, cut

right 15 yards. Best of three times.

END

START

3) Shuttle Run. 15 yard shuttle – touching end cone – 4 times (up and

back is one time) Best of three times.

C) ENDURANCE

This will be gauged through timed distance runs and playing for endurance.

The best way to improve endurance is to use interval training and playing the game.

These activities should give you an idea as to what we are looking for. We want our

players to demonstrate a high degree of fitness. Agility, quickness, speed and

endurance are key aspects to the game.

You can be as creative as you want with your training. Continue to increase your

distance.

Push yourself as far as you can!! You will only improve if you push!!

Change these exercises around to make them more interesting –

but above all – START TODAY!!

Correct Running Technique

Our team has to be taught proper soccer running technique. They

have to be 5 – 10 yards fast. This is how you beat an opponent. The

average all out sprint is only 15 – 25 yards. They will also only touch

the ball a total of less than 2 minutes per game. Hence, the

importance of correct technique in running and ball skills is crucial.

The player who can explode over the first few yards is the one in

front.

In a game a player spends their time = walking/standing

28%, jogging 26%, low speed run 21%, run moderate 14%,

run high 6%, sprint 3%, Run backwards 2% (Alan Pearson;

Man. Utd. Fitness Trainer).

This shows how players must make the most –

out of that 3%

The 2 minutes they are on the ball

First step & touch

Movement OFF the ball

Arm Mechanics

o Elbows at 90 degrees

o Relaxed hands and shoulders

o the inside of the wrist should brush the pocket

o The hands should move from hip to chest or head

Lift Mechanics

Soccer is a multi stop and start sport. The phases of acceleration and re-acceleration are crucial.

During the first 5 yards players should take short, sharp steps. They need to generate a high

degree of force in order to make explosive steps.

o 45 degree leg lift

o Knees coming up in a vertical line

o Front of foot facing forward

o Be sure legs do not splay out

o foot to floor contact with ball of the foot

o Off heels

o Tapping noise – not a slap

Posture

o Forward lean

o Don’t fold in the middle

Deceleration

o Posture – lean back. Foot transfer to the heel, acts like a brake

o Use the arms – your arms help you “step on the brakes” harder

Summer Ball Work

Master the ball in every situation

The best way to get better is to practice

with the ball and play. These are the key

tickets to get you to the next level.

We will be using the Coerver Method for our ball

work this summer.

Go to the New Albany Girls Soccer website and look for the links

under COERVER TECHNICAL BALL WORK

The videos will show you SOME of the activities we will be

conducting during our training this summer.

Get started today!

Coerver work is fun and good exercise!

It will make you a better player – but you have

to do it!!
