Compassion Redefined
Although I never had any illusions that George W. Bush or anyone in his corrupt and selfish administration ever gave a rat's ass about America or Americans—except where profitablilty was concerned—I am still amazed at the ill-will, meanness and general misanthropy directed toward the victims of Hurricane Katrina. I cannot believe the bad press being heaped upon the victims and survivors or this natural disaster. It was, of course, no surprise to me that the “Christian” conservatives suggested that the residents of New Orleans were being punished by God for their profligate ways.
But it is inexcusable that the devastated and homeless are being blamed for their own disaster. Most of this is because the federal response to Hurricane Katrina has been less than impressive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was absorbed by the Department of Homeland Security, is under intense criticism for their failure to respond. The political supporter rewarded by George W. Bush by his appointment to the head of FEMA had no prior experience in anything that qualified him for managing disaster preparedness or response, which he has proved unequivocally.
It has been four years since 9/11, which theoretically galvanized America into preparing for disasters, whether natural or manmade. It has been a wasted four years, apparently. George W. Bush's federal government has failed spectacularly. And so, to deflect from the Bush administration's abject failure, the conservative propaganda machine, spearheaded by FOX News, has spent lots of time and effort blaming the victims and survivors instead. A prime example would have to be the newscast about the rescue helicopter pilot turning tail and running because someone fired a gun in his general direction. Contrast his behavior with the heroism of rescue workers who ran into the burning Twin Towers. Yet the news portrayed him and his running from hurricane victims as somehow justified.
This is what compassionate conservatism is all about. That is, a complete
and total lack of compassion but enough spin to fool the great unwashed masses,
who foolishly and ignorantly depend on FOX News to tell them the truth. If
you have for one single second blamed the victims of Hurricane Katrina for
anything they've done as a result of what they have endured, you should be
deeply ashamed of yourself. You should be praying for forgiveness and hoping
that having love for your fellow man is not really a criteria for salvation,
because you have failed that test.
