Remember This Bush Lie About the CIA Leak?

Here is an excerpt from a speech by President George W. Bush given on September 30, 2003. You can read it for yourself on the White House webiste here.

Q Do you think that the Justice Department can conduct an impartial investigation, considering the political ramifications of the CIA leak, and why wouldn't a special counsel be better?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes. Let me just say something about leaks in Washington. There are too many leaks of classified information in Washington. There's leaks at the executive branch; there's leaks in the legislative branch. There's just too many leaks. And if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.

Lying under oath and obstruction of justice are both violations of the law. Karl Rove and Lewis "Sccoter" Libby both denied any involvement in the CIA leak from the beginning. Now it turns out that both of them were very involved. When Libby was indicted, he was not fired, he was allowed to resign. Karl Rove, who has not been charged yet but is nonetheless intimately involved in the case, is being allowed to continue on under a cloud of suspicion. So when the president says he will take action against lawbreakers, evidently cronies within his administration are exempted. Unless of course what the president meant by "taken care of" is that the leaker will receive protection from prosecution if it turns out he is a team player....

It's right there in black and white, on the White House website. Read it for yourself.
