Welcome to the web page for my game, Night Stalkers. Night Stalkers is a work in progress. It's a side-scrolling fighting game designed and programmed by me, Tim Nolan. Though it's still in its embryonic stages, I'm still making a playable demo available for download. If you like Final Fight, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or if you're just into cute, furry animals hacking each other to death with swords and axes, you just might enjoy the Night Stalkers demo.
(Updated 9/23/02) The latest version (0.20) is out! Now Night Stalkers has items for you to smash and grab to keep you occupied between ass-whoopings. The readme.txt file (also included in the zipped file) explains what else is new in this version. Installing Night Stalkers is simple. First, download it here. Then unzip it into its own directory. Readme.txt has lots of useful information on how to play the game, so I recommend that you read it before you play. The actual game program is called ns.exe. It's a Windows game and should run properly in any version of Windows released in 1995 or later. I haven't been able to test the game on enough computers to get a feel for the minimum system requirements, but I would guess that you'll need a few hundred of those megahertz thingies. Yes, I'm going to try to do some optimization. :)
The Night Stalkers level editor, StalkEd, is also available. Included in the package are the Transparency Editor program, which can help you in making your own tile sets for the game, nslvldoc.txt, the instructions for the editor, and an MS Word document which is a handy reference guide for the editor commands and various related info. Download the package here and unzip it into the same directory you put Night Stalkers in. To play a new level you have created, choose the User Map option from the main menu of Night Stalkers, then type in the full name of your level and press Enter. Then choose the number of players and the difficulty level, and you're ready to go.
The source code for Night Stalkers and StalkEd
is here for download. In addition, there's now a partially converted version of the
Night Stalkers source code for Linux, done by Jon Rafkind. Keep in mind that
the Linux source code is for the original version of the game (0.1). Because I don't
do the Linux conversion myself, and I don't release my own source code until I
release the latest version of the game, the Linux version will always be behind the
Windows version.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Night Stalkers is one of several game projects I'm developing. I've been working on it off and on since the summer of 1997. Since the project's beginning, I've switched from Borland C to DJGPP, I've incorporated the powerful Allegro game programming routines, and I've converted it from a DOS program to Windows, necessitating another compiler switch from DJGPP to Microsoft Visual C++. Yes, it took me until 2001 to concede that DOS was dead.
To this point in time, Night Stalkers has been a solo project. I'm trying to make all the game's content completely original. Everything that isn't handled by Allegro routines was programmed by me. I designed all the levels, I made all the graphics, and I wrote all the music. I did a few of the sound effects myself, but I had to borrow a few from other games. The death screams are from Streets of Rage 3 and the sound of a body hitting the floor is from Street Fighter II.
Want to contribute to this project? I can't do all this on my own. If you're an aspiring game developer looking to make a name for yourself, or if you'd simply like to lend your talents to a fun project, let me know! I could use level designers, artists, MIDI musicians, voice talent, and sound effects people. Even if you're another programmer and you think you can help with the Night Stalkers project, feel free to get in touch with me. I'm not a huge software company, so I can't afford to pay anyone for their contributions, but I will put your name in the game's credits. Yes, I know the game has no credits right now. But it will. One final note--as the game's creator, I can't guarantee that I will use everything that is submitted to me, and I also reserve the right to edit outside submissions to better fit the theme and look of the game.
