She knew running away hadn't been the answer. What was?

"Can't you do anything? I've never seen such a lazy stupid kid." He threw the shirt at her. The buttons
stung her face. Worse were how his words stung her heart.
"I hate him," she told her mother who'd come back in.
Her mother sighed. "Jessica, you shouldn't say that. I know it's hard. At least he doesn't beat you. Some fathers beat their
children."
Jessica fought back more tears. And some fathers love their children.

The sunset was pretty, but this her family in this happy moment was the most beautiful sight. She
didn't dare look away for fear it would disappear. If only things could be this way always.
Jessica knew she really should explain things to Carolyn, so she would understand. But she just couldn't
tell Carolyn about her father. She couldn't tell anyone. It was a thing she didn't, couldn't talk about. Even to a best friend.
Which, of course, she didn't have anymore.

"Timmy! Where are you?"
Jessica heard a tiny cry from far away,"Help me!"
"The well!" Jessica yelled.
Jessica hoped her father had gone out to the car already. However, soon she saw him pushing his way
through the crowd. She had no choice. She'd have to introduce him. Oh she hoped he wouldn't be too embarrassing.
She shivered in excitement at the idea. Did she dare plan such a big thing? She sighed. Did she dare not?
Jessica couldn't change the past, but she didn't have to grow up and let her future just happen.
She knew she had the power to make it better.
