People
For the American Way
Many
of the values and institutions that sustain a diverse democratic society
are now threatened by the influence of the radical right and its allies
who have risen to positions of political power. Our most fundamental rights
and freedomsand even our basic constitutional frameworkare
at risk. People for the American Way works in close collaboration with
other leading national and state progressive organizations to mobilize
Americans at this defining moment in our history.

The
American Civil Liberties Union - ACLU
"The
ACLU and many allies on the left and right believe that before giving
law enforcement new powers, Congress must first re-examine provisions
of the first PATRIOT Act to ensure that is in alignment with key constitutional
protections"

Grassroots
America Defends the Bill of Rights
"A broad coalition of organizations will convene a national
organizing conference in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2003. The conference
will assemble representatives of independent grassroots groups; coalitions
involved in related legal and legislative action; Muslim, Arab, Hispanic,
and other constituencies that have been disproportionately affected by
the new laws, and others who want to join the growing movement."
The
Bill of Rights Defense Committee - bordc.org
"We support repeal of parts of the USA PATRIOT Act, Homeland
Security Act, and Executive Orders that infringe on Constitutional rights.
This web site documents and supports local efforts to restore civil liberties
guaranteed by the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution, which have
been threatened by the Act and Orders."

The
Electronic Frontier Foundation: Defending Freedom in the Digital World
"If America's founding fathers had anticipated the digital frontier,
there would be a clause in the Constitution protecting your rights online,
as well. Instead, a modern group of freedom fighters was necessary to
extend the original vision into the digital world. That's
where the Electronic Frontier Foundation comes in."

US
Domestic Covert Operations
"Since COINTELPRO was used mainly against the progressive movements
of the 1960s, its impact can be grasped only in the context of the momentous
social upheaval which shook the country during those years."
The
US Department of Homeland Security
"Understanding the Homeland Security Advisory System- The world has
changed since September 11, 2001. We remain a nation at risk to terrorist
attacks and will remain at risk for the foreseeable future."
Refuse
& Resist
"A political and ideological program of "Resurgent America"
is being cultivated and guided from the highest offices in the land. Its
prominent themes - a "moral awakening of the nation" and the
drive for America to be Number One in the world by force of arms - have
a distinctly fascist aura and raise the specter of a police state."
Stop
the Patriot Act ALERT
The National Week of Student Action to Oppose the Patriot Act started
at the ACLU National Membership Conference's youth summit. Four hundred
youth ACLU members came to the Membership Conference to ³stand up for
freedom² and to take action! As students, we realize the importance of
opposing legislation such as the Patriot Act that threatens to deprive
every American of his/her constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.
