Marianthe

Athena Tacha

Athena Tacha is currently a Professor of Art at Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH 44074. As a Professor of Art, she remains very active in the art field. Although, she has not been as active in the area of environmental art has she once was, she has completed over twenty public works.

Athena Tacha is an American, born 1936, in Larissa, Greece. At this point I believe she was born and raised in Greece, therefore, she has two different types of cultural experience from which to draw upon. A recent retrospective of her work was shown at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta during the summer of 1989.

Areas of work:

Public commissions (environmental art), sculptures, films, serial photographs of natural forms, conceptual art pieces, digital art and books on the works of other artists.

Recently commissioned public work:

The Ecology Building, The University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN
Artist Athena Tacha has been commissioned to produce a visual work for the interior spaces of the building. Her streams of images in etched granite will display many images taken directly from research conducted in the Ecology building. As one enters the building, one will be at once introduced to the myriad of activities going on within and perhaps get some sense for the interwoven nature of studies of ecology, evolution and behavior. Philosophy:

"My art is not about art, its definitions, its limits (that is a side issue):
it is about reality and its basic fabric (space, time, matter, gravity) ...
the expanded understanding of reality provided to us by recent developments
of elementary particles-physics, astrophysics, cosmology and related
branches of science... through formal and rhythmic means borrowed
from areas of nature closer to our sensorial knowledge of the world:
geological formations, patterns of fluids in motion, biological rhythms."
