Buster Simpson
Parables are woven throughout the work of Buster Simpson. Look closely and you will hear the story of the forests, the first settlers of the North American continent, and the life force of our planet home sprouting in the concrete of our cities. -- Sculpting with the Environment, B. Oakes
As an artist interested primarily in making strong environmental statements, Buster (Lewis C.) Simpson has taken it upon himself to use his art to fight the degradation of nature. The work he has completed ranges from coast to coast, providing a broad and varied body of ecological art. Born in 1942, Simpson has spent decades using his creative abilities to counter the damaging effects of environmental issues such as water pollution and clear-cut logging. Often
setting his art in the urban landscape, Buster strives to illuminate the relationship of man to nature, and nature to man-- the delicate balance so often exploited by society.
The intriguing part of Simpson's art is its ability to echo historical, contextual, and contemporary
references. The capturing of environmental phenomena-- using natural forms, materials, and metaphorical symbology -- is prevalent in all his pieces. Buster Simpson has used his talents to bring ecological and environmental issues to the urban context, challenging all of us to recognize the 'interdependence of us all' (Fragile Ecologies, Barbara Matilsky).
