Andy Goldsworthy

Touching the heart of a place...

Andy Goldsworthy was born in Cheshire, England in 1956 and raised in Yorkshire. He holds two degrees, one from Bradford Art College and another from Preston Polytechnic.

He is primarily an open air artist, using material found in the landscape to create his works. "He makes a sort of pastoral process art, restricting himself to materials available at a chosen site." "Much of what he does is ephemeral, enduring only in photographs." "Goldsworthy returns to nature as a fount of beauty and suggestion, but none of his work is without an insistent buzz of ecological anxiety." (Haines)

His work has been represented at the Venice Biennale, at an exhibit in Germany and another in the United States. He has held one man shows all over the world, frequenting Britain, France, Holland and Japan. A 1989 exhibit in London featured works he created in the Northern Territories of Canada and in the North Pole. At the Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture a major retrospective of his work was exhibited in 1990, and it then toured the world.

He now lives in a small village of Penpont called Dumfriesshire, where many of his works are created.

"Andy Goldsworthy has intimately involved himself in a curious push-pull between art and nature". "What remains so intriguing about Goldsworthy's work is his wholehearted immersion in the processes of nature". (Kino) "Goldsworthy's collaboration with the land, like that of his compatriots Richard Long and David Nash, remains private and discreet". "His inspiration is first and foremost a direct response to the land itself". (Dumas)
