Notes

This is how Steve described this album on his blog on April 9, 2008 ("my crow wave"):

you know it
this is the beautiful stuff
the simple stuff
the universal stuff
the blips and talking trumpets...
the space around the notes....
the easy on the ears stuff
the melodic stuff
the real real songs stuff
the poignant stuff
the subtle n sexy stuff
the romantic stuff
this one you will play over n over
you'll never get sick of it

Notes

Recorded live at The Toff In Town on September 10, 2009. Includes a bonus photo gallery. There is a review of the DVD at DOA and another review at QRO Magazine.

Advertising write-up:

Live at the Toff is a once-only performance of Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Martin Kennedy (All India Radio) playing their acclaimed album Unseen Music Unheard Words. Joining them on stage is The Triffid's Graham Lee and percussionist Michael Evans-Barker. September 10, 2009 was a night to remember at the Toff in Town. The David Lynch-esque venue was the perfect setting for Steve Kilbey and his tuxedo clad band. Kilbey swooned and mesmerised the crowd as Kennedy and band played the entire album in track order. They followed up with a preview of their forthcoming second album as well as an amazing downtempo version of The Church classic "Under the Milky Way" before finishing with "Providence" written by Kilbey and the Go-Betweens Grant McLennan.

Notes

Steve wrote about this album on his blog, with a track by track rundown, on March 4, 2013 ("you are everything").

The track "Brother Moon Sister Sun" began life as a song commissioned by Colette O'Neill (aka Kohl Ette) — see Song Commissions below. Of this song she wrote on YouTube:

I originally commissioned the song, then decommissioned and injected the funds into the album and sk's art. I contributed lyrics 'loving them for who they are not what they do' and 'don't forget to use your gifts love your life don't be afraid'. The title was my idea and tweaked by sk. Darkness/light contrasts came from my attempts to describe my offsprings' personalities. sk filled out? the lyrics nicely and love mk's music inspired by my and my kids' eclectic musical tastes."

Notes

Marketing write-up:

Fourteen of our favourite commissioned songs 2011-2012 plus a brand new track! The CD is packaged in a digipak with beautiful artwork by reclusive 1970/80s fantasy artist Steve R Dodd.

The CD is expected to ship on or around December 10 2013

songs from the real world for the real world. martin and i had been kicking this idea around for awhile. it gave us a chance to be real artisans and apply our craft to tailor made songs about things the person who commissioned the song wanted to hear sung and expressed. almost everybody except for one client was happy.

the songs were created from the ground up. martin would prepare the loveliest instrumental tracks he dreamed up whilst bearing the clients request in mind. then i would try to incorporate their thoughts as lyrics into the songs. And find melodies and places to sing them. finally martin would jig my stuff a bit and mix it all down.

people wanted songs about all kinds of things. their boyfriends and girlfriends and children and places and even abstract concepts. the challenge was on though: could martin and i deliver songs as good as our "real" songs. the answer is yes as far as i am concerned. some of these songs carry even more oomph and mojo and they are heartfelt all the way down the line and finished off with love. just what youd expect from 2 craftsmen who sculpt in song.

ok, a further song is "more of the same" which is a brand new song written specially for this album. we hope you really enjoy this record.

- sk bondi beach november 2013

Many thanks and much love to all our commissioners. To those whose song did not make it on to this album, Volume 2 is in the works!

Track 10, "Life's Sweet Decay," includes excerpts from the poem Offering and Rebuff

Offering and Rebuff
by Carl Sandburg

I could love you
as dry roots love rain.
I could hold you
as branches in the wind
brandish petals.
Forgive me for speaking so soon.

Let your heart look
on white sea spray
and be lonely.

Love is a fool star.

You and a ring of stars
may mention my name
and then forget me.

Love is a fool star.

by Carl Sandburg.

Notes

Steve announced and wrote a bit about this album in his blog ["we were made to glow and fade" - Feb. 13, 2017].

Two "Glow and Fade" bundles were initially sold at the Social Family Records Store:

Sales blurb:

'Glow And Fade' is album number 5 from Steve Kilbey and Martin Kennedy, celebrating a decade of collaboration. The 8 track musical journal released through Golden Robot Records is the ultimate convergence of atmospheric landscapes and dream rock. The songs are about wide-eyed naivete and crushing cynicism, nature of time, time of nature, the struggle and the defeat, and love in all its old disguises.

Notes

Write-up at CD Baby:

A collection of artists banding together to sing "Songs for Haiti", this is a benefit album to help the rescue effort for the people of Haiti after the massive and devastating January earthquake. Spear-headed by singer-songwriter Shannon Hurley after wondering how a musician could possibly help in the aftermath of such a tragedy, this project came together in a matter of weeks with songs that would help re-build lives and heal broken spirits. Gently bridging from singer-songwriter/acoustic folk, to soft electronic, to modern pop-rock, all of these songs have the common purpose of finding music as a way to help solve the problems of the world. All proceeds go directly to www.oxfamamerica.org.
