What's this all about?

Fun. Serious is so much fun to live with, I wanted to share it.

Fun. I like playing around with graphics, web design and words. The Art of Being Serious let me do all those things.

And just a little wistful thought at the back of my mind -- maybe some person who sees this site will think about animals with a more open mind. Pay closer attention. See more clearly that the animals who share our world do truly think, feel, love, fear, imagine, worry, plan... and absolutely deserve our loving, intelligent, honorable best. And our open minds!

Serious's Mom

As Serious's Mom, I'm always busy even when I'm "relaxing." I must keep Lids available, and Feathers hidden, and be prepared for Serious Pets whenever necessary. (Not to mention being on Paper Patrol 24 hours a day.)

Otherwise, I do computer stuff, and design stuff, and listen to mockingbirds whenever possible.

I love being a cat mom. Maybe I'll adopt a friend for my Serious in the future, but right now she's very happy being a solo cat. (And I confess to enjoying the unusual perks of having a cat who's never learned such traditional cat hobbies as climbing screens and drapes and bookshelves, or exploring closet shelves.)

Two cat friends curled up together and sleeping in the sun is a beautiful thing, though, and one day both she and I will be ready for our Third Half.

I think dogs are pretty darn cool, too. I've been an Aunt to several beloved and spectacular dogs -- an honor and a delight!

I'm not sure, though, that I have the moral fiber to be a responsible dog mom myself. You have to walk your dog in the RAIN -- picking up poop has never been a favorite pastime of mine -- and I doubt I am consistent enough to train a dog to do anything at all, except to be the boss of me.

I didn't have to train Serious to be my boss! Madam CheerPerson figured it out all by herself about 5 minutes after she moved in...
About This Site

Venus and Lily

My first two cats deserve their own websites, too. Lily wouldn't want one, though. And Venus just doesn't easily fit into words for me. (Even if she did, I'm not sure anyone would believe me!)
Lily
My hero, forever. My belligerent, prickle-natured "Goose," who yet had the most generous and courageous spirit. Lily took up yodeling at age 15, and spent the next 5 years caroling and bellowing with gusto and obvious delight. LOUDLY.

It was wonderful!

I have never seen anyone -- human or animal -- become as nearly incandescent with joy as Lily was when she was deeply happy. She also had an astonishingly expressive and changeable face, along with the ability to look exactly like E.T.
Venus
Napping on the top edges of open doors; doing her broccoli dance; always, always leaping into my arms to press her face against mine...

The other half of my soul, my self.

Her absolute joy in me was as intense and constant as my absolute joy in her. And in ways I cannot wholly describe, she continually crossed the boundaries of the material world and brought me shining gifts of spirit and transcendent vision.

Colette was right. No cat is ordinary. Each cat offers a new universe to explore -- sometimes an unusual one! but always one with amazing gifts for those who live with open hearts and minds.
