UPDATE: According to NY Times, 6/30/06, NYPD caught John L. McGhee,38,charged him with murder, manslaughter and attempted robbery in connection with death of Edgar Garzon.
The W T C disaster eclipsed yet another hate crime that occurred 8/15/2001, the death of Edgar Garzon at the hands of two unknown felons cruising in a red car (a Hondai or Acura model with noisy exhaust), that took place two blocks away from where Julio Rivera lost his life in a similar bludgeoning attack years ago.
[Julio Rivera happened on a very bad scene behind PS 69 one summer's evening in 1989; an evil-minded young man led him there, where two accomplices jumped him, bashing his head with a hammer and baseball bat. Found curled-up in an embryonic huddle, drowning in a pool of blood on the sidewalk outside the schoolyard, Julio later died at the hospital.
The community board, duly petitioned by QGLU (a local gay organization), renamed the street corner "Julio Rivera Corner" and officially set aside this day for an annual parade, honoring Julio's memory and the loved ones he left behind. It took another 10 years for the City to put up the sign; one of the accused jumped bail, never served time.]
