Once I got the idea to create the "Bethlehem Enquirer", the card wrote itself. This was before I had a PC, so the lettering came from special waxed-paper transfer sheets, and each letter had to be individually rubbed onto a very large sheet of graph paper. The card's dynamic is that the headline conjures up a horrible image that is offset by the "cute" illustration (no bloodshed this time) -- so, the original mock-up with the headlines was pretty disturbing before I added the drawings. For a while, it actually made me nervous to have the damn thing in my house.
The head of Elvis comes from the famous photo of him shaking hands with Nixon. The print-shop still proudly displays this one, but only in the back room where the public can't see it.
