  India launches missile
  Tuesday, April 29, 2003

India test-launched a medium-range Prithvi missile from its Chandipur testing range in the eastern state of Orissa on April 29, a day after the first meaningful talks in almost two years between leaders of Pakistan and India, Press Trust of India news agency reports. The Prithvi is India's most sophisticated missile and is capable of carrying a nuclear payload up to 95 miles. Last March, India fired a Prithvi missile, prompting Pakistan to test-fire a missile a day later. Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan said the missile test was a "pleasant surprise," that India notified its South Asian neighbor before the launch. He brushed aside any concern over the test, noting it simply confirmed that there were missiles in South Asia.
