Not sure which search engine(s) best meet you needs ? Try these tables comparing the features of different search engines.

Rick's Picks: Medical and Specialized Search Engines

Avicenna - A relatively new site geared towards health professionals. Requires registration but offers free MEDLINE, Outcomes Database, a proprietary medical terminology search engine, a pharmaceuticals and medicines index, medical database, medical links and more.

Medscape - Some features require registration. Databases include MEDSCAPE, MEDLINE (backfiles to 1966), AIDSLINE, KeywordsDocument retrieval by mail or fax for a price.

Healthgate - Another place to do free MEDLINE searches. Some features require registration. Document retrieval by mail or fax for a price.

NlightN - This search engine covers a host of scientific and scholarly databases as well as the popular press and the WWW. Among the databases are MEDLINE and Index Medicus (Abridged) but unfortunately, not CINAHL. Requires registration. WWW searches are free, information from proprietary databases aren't. Costs range from a few cents for each abstract retrieved to substantial to order the full text version of articles from some databases.

Physics Around the World: Search for Physics and Other Information - The name says it all. If you're looking for physics information this is a good place to start.

Rick's Picks: WWW Search Engines

AltaVista - The size of its database, the speed of its search engine, and the ability to more narrowly define searches by using Boolean operators, specifying which parts of documents to search, nesting, searching by date, and user defined results ranking criteria gives Alta-Vista the edge when it comes to finding specific information on the Web or in USENET newsgroups.
Alta Vista: Advanced Query

Alta Vista Simple Query

Lycos - With a database almost as large as [and sometimes more up to date than] Alta Vista's, Lycos remains an excellent search tool although it would benefit from a more full-featured search engine.

All-in-One Internet Search - Not sure where to start looking? The All-in-One search page has links to enough search engines to keep even the most dedicated information hunters happy.

Yahoo - Although Yahoo is more accurately categorized as an index, the size of its index combined with the power of its search engine merits its inclusion here as well.
