Welcome to my web page. My roots are deeply embedded in Tippah Co., MS, where my forefathers came after leaving North Carolina and South Carolina. If you're looking for 'bells and whistles,' you will probably be disappointed. Because of my limited technology ability, this is the most basic of genealogy pages. Information contained on these pages are accurate to the best of my knowledge. I'm relatively new to genealogy, starting about four years ago. I'm very grateful to researchers who have so kindly shared information to further my search. Hopefully, I have been able to give appropriate and well deserved credit to their works, when applicable.

Please contact me at telem@earthlink.net if you have corrections, additions, or questions regarding any of these families. This homepage will always be 'under construction.'

The Paul Family of Mississippi

(pictures)

The Paul family of Tippah Co., MS migrated from Robeson Co., NC between 1840-1850. Wiley Paul, born about 1805 (thought to be the son of Abraham and Amelia Paul) married Rebecca Bigs in Robeson in 1829. They are shown there in the 1830 census. I have not been able to find the family after that until 1840, where they appear in Madison Co., TN, shown in that census.

By 1844, Rebecca had died and Wiley had remarried to Mary Anna McDonel, born c. 1808 of KY. They had the following children born in MS: Pearson, born c. 1844, William R., born c. 1846, Phily Clementine c. 1847, Thomas S., born c. 1851, Tabitha Ann, born c. 1853, Emeline Larkie, born c. 1855 and Willis (William) Haywood Paul, my grandfather, who was born 15 September 1858 and died 11 June, 1942.

From 1850-1870, Wiley and Mary are not found in the Tippah Co. census. Family history has it that the family was living outside Saulsbury, TN (Hardeman Co.) during the time of the Civil War.

Wiley died about 1870, although I haven't been able to find a record of where and when he died or was interred. Some think that Mary died also about the same time. However, there's a marriage of a Mary Paul to J. H. Miller on 30 October, 1874 in Benton County, Mississippi (7). Since this was the only Paul family in the area, there's a good chance that Mary did indeed remarry and move to another location. No record has been found of her death.

About 1870 an aunt, Polly Paul (8), came from Tennessee to take over the household. There's a Polly Paul listed in the household of Thomas and Sarah Paul in the 1850 census of Jackson Co., TN. It may be that this is the same Polly Paul. There are also several instances of a William and Thomas Paul in the same general location: Robinson Co., N.C., Rhea Co., TN, Lincoln Co. TN (9). Thomas and Wiley's relationship, if any, has not been verified. Willis was about twelve years old when Polly took over the household. Many of Willis's siblings were on their own or living in other households at the time.

As a child, Willis and his brothers and sisters loved to play church. Willis would often climb into the barn loft and preach to his siblings. Willis often recalled the times he and his mother rode in a wagon pulled by oxen as they traveled during the Civil War days to Saulsbury, Tennessee, to buy groceries (10). (Saulsbury is in Hardeman County, just north of the Mississippi-Tennnessee border. I have not found any records on the Pauls in Hardeman Co.

Willis grew up to be a farmer. He married Liney May on 15 June, 1880 (11). They were thought to have had five children, only one of whom lived beyond infancy-Joseph Paul. (Some records show Joe Paul's middle name as Haywood. The significance of this reoccurring middle name is unknown.) After Liney died, Willis married again to Senthia/Cynthia Jane Morgan on 15 December 1887 (12). They had the following children: Marion (male), Henry, Jennie, Katheryn, William and Will.

When Senthia/Cynthia died, Willis married a third time to Lucy Jane (Johnson) Coley on 24 July 1904 (13). Lucy was the young widow of J. I. Coley, with two daughters, Mary and Myrtle. Willis and Lucy were farmers, and had the following children: Robert Leroy Paul, Edd Paul, Louis Ervin Paul, Vertie Everett Paul and Jewell Virginia Paul (14).

Willis was known to be a kind and gentle man, a "living saint," as his daughter, Jewell, referred to him. Willis died 1 June, 1942 and is buried at Antioch Cemetery (15), Tippah County, Mississippi.

(Taken, in large part, from an article by Martha Ann Paul Kent for the Tippah County, MS Historical Society.)

JACOB RHYNE (REIN)

(1726-~1795)

Posted by HOWARD S RHYNE <Howard@loclnet> on Thu, 18 Mar 1999

Surnames: REINAU, REIN, RHEIN, RHYNE, GLATTFELDER

Jacob (REIN) RHYNE was born 12 Aug 1726 in Blankenloch, Baden-Durlach, Germany, son of Hans Martin REINAU and Magdelina FREYMULLER, and grandson of Barthel and Anna REINAU. He lived in a small farming village, where his father was referred to as "a small farmer" and his grandfather was referred to as "the one who plows with oxen". He was brought to America by his mother and father, along with the rest of the family. They arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "FOX" on October 12, 1738.

The REINAU family settled in the West Manchester area of York County, Penn. Jacob grew up in that area and on 18 Nov 1750, at age 24 married Lisabeth (Elizabeth) GLATTFELDER, born 1729 in Glattfelden, Zurich, Switzerland, daughter of Johan Peter GLATTFELDER and Salomae AMBERG. They settled on a 50 acre plot of land south of York village near her uncle, Casper Glattfelder, who had brought his deceased brother`s family to America along with his own family.

The Jacob RHYNE family began to increase, and by about 1762, 4 or 5 of their 8 children had been born. About this time the Rhyne family, being known as "REIN," moved to the area of North Carolina now known as Gaston County, where they settled on a part of a farm, owned by Phillip RUDISILL. (Phillip Rudisill had moved from York Co. Pa. a few years earlier, having lived in the same area as the REINAU family. Philip's sister Elizabeth had married Jacob Rein`s older brother, Martin.)

Jacob and Elizabeth GLATTFELDER REIN (RHYNE) had the following children:

(1) MARIA MAGDALENA RHYNE who married CLONINGER.

(2) JACOB RHYNE 2nd married MARIA ELIZABETH BEST.

(3) PETER RHYNE married ANNE MAGDALENE WILLS.

(4) MICHAEL W RHYNE married BARBARA HOYLE.

(5) JOHAN PHILIP RHYNE married MARIA HANNAH HOYLE.

(6) SARA CATHERINE RHYNE married JOHN HOVIS.

(7) EVE RHYNE married --?--BEST, son of SEBASTIAN BEST.

(8) ELIZABETH (MOLLY) RHYNE never married.

Surnames: Rhyne

I also have as children of Jacob and Elizabeth Clodfelter Rhyne:

(1) Peter Rhyne born 16 Mar 1755-8 Jul 1828 married Anna Magdalena WILLS.

(2) Eve Rhyne married Michael Best.

(3) Thomas Rhyne married Barbara WISE.

(4) Phillip 30 Jan 1760-9 Dec 1803 married (1st) Sally Hope and 2nd Hannah Hoyle.

Other children were: Jacob, Mary Magdalena, Michael, Sarah Catherine, and Elizabeth.

By Howard S. Rhyne

HANS MARTIN REINAU, son of BARTHEL REINAU of Blankenloch,Baden-Durlach, arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "FOX" on October 12, 1738 with
his family. On the ship's list, only he and his son Hans Martin Reinau were cited. They were listed as Martin Rein age 45,( church records indicate his age as 49
