The area is now fenced with a plaque marking the site. Maria Julianna Cloninger was born 7 April 1757. She married Heinreich Nunius 13 December 1772 at ST. Michael and Zion Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, PA. They stayed in PA. Philip Cloninger, his wife and two sons moved to North Carolina in 1768. Coming down the old Philadelphia wagon road which followed The Shenandoah Valley and crossed over The Blue Ridge into North Carolina. They crossed The Catawba River at Beatties Ford. They signed for a land grant on both sides of Seigles Creek. This land was 180 poles square or 200 acres., joining Thomas Beattie's land on the south. 16 Highway runs North and South on the east side. Philip had three more 200 acres tracts of land and he sold them. Philip sold his first tract to his son Adam in July 28, 1771. Adam sold it to his brother Michael 17 years later. In 1789 Michael sold it back to his father Philip. Philip called the two creeks and forks his homeplace. On February 27, 1798 Philip sold his land to Frederick Mires. This was the last we heard of Philip and his wife. Duke Power has a railroad track that runs near the forks and may be over the old homeplace site. Michael Cloninger in 1793 bought 270 acres of land from George Misconak. This land was north of the 250 acre tract of Nicholas Hillerman and Phillip's. Michael bought 10 acres on the corner from Hillerman joining his. In 1813 Michael bought 150 acres on the north side of his tract from William, Richard and John Martin. Michael would have had 430 acres now but in 1811 he deeded a tract of land on the east side to his son John Cloninger who sold this tract to John Fenison on October 16, 1820. Michael had about 360 acres at time of his death. Michael Cloninger 1754-1829 married Anna Barbara Fritz around 1780. Anna was born December 21,1759. Her parents were Phillip Fritz and Anna Barbara Kastner born - Edenkoben, Germany. The parents of Anna Kastner were George Adam Kastner born-April 17,1698 died 1767 in Gaston Co. North Carolina and Anna Maria Kraus. Michael and Anna Cloninger had 4 girls and 4 Boys. Michael left a will in 1828 naming all 8 of his children. John Cloninger the oldest son of Michael and Anna married Dolly Summit. Kathy married Godfrey Reel ; Mary married Jacob Summit, brother to Dolly. Barbara married a Parker. Betsey Elizabeth married David Like. John Cloninger was the only son of Michael who stayed in North Carolina. Daniel moved to Tennessee around 1830. Michael Jr.and Henry moved there as well in 1845. They lived off Strawberry Plains RD. about 10 miles east of Knoxville TN. near U.S. Highway 70. Betsey Cloninger Like and David were living in Knox Co. TN. in 1840. Henry moved his family to Carter Co Missouri before 1860. He is there with his wife Mary in the census of 1860 with a son named William born in Tn. in 1855. In the Howell Co census of 1870 Henry has a new wife Mandy and two young sons James and Lawson. At first glance it was thought this was a daughter of Henryís and his grandsons because Henry is 70 and Mandy is 26, James 2 and Lawson 1. There is a marriage record of Henry Cloninger to Amanda Fagga in Carter Co Mo Oct. 1, 1868. In the 1880 of Howell Co MO Henry 82 is alone with sons James 12 and Lawson 10. Henry must have died around 1890. James and Lawson are in a book The First Land Owners Of Howell Co Mo. James F. and Lawson Cloninger minor heirs of Henry Cloninger August 19,1890. John Coulter, Sheriff of Lincoln Co. N.C., Sold Daniel Cloninger's interest in the homeplace to Joseph Graham - Deed dated 3 September 1829. Thomas Cloninger bought it back in 1831 and sold to John Cloninger Jr. in 1838. John Jr sold the land to William Long in 1840. This land was sold in small tracts after 1870. John Cloninger and Dolly bought 272 acres of land from her father Frances Summit. This land was about one mile east of Claremont in today Catawba Co. and ran south across Macklin Creek to the Bogg's line John Cloninger and Dolly Summit had 12 children 10 boys and 2 girls. They were Thomas, Moses, Henry, Philemon, David, Andrew, John, Noah, Michael, Rufina, Nancy and Elcanah. Thomas and Moses lived north of Hickory N.C. Thomas Cloninger was essential in the founding of Catawba Co. In the 1840's there was only one county west of the Catawba River where present day Lincoln, Catawba, Cleveland and Gaston County's are. When it was decided to divide it up into several County's, Thomas was on the committee that picked the site of the Catawba Co. seat in what is now Newton. His family ran a water wheel driven mill and it was a landmark site called Cloninger's Mill north of Hickory on The Catawba River for many years. It is now under Lake Hickory. Thomas died 13 January 1871 and is buried at St. Johns Cemetery in Catawba Co. N.C. In the 1850 Census after the land was divided there were Cloninger's listed in Catawba Co. and Gaston Co., but none listed in present day Lincoln Co. It is assumed that all Cloninger's listed in Catawba were descended from Michael and Anna Fritz Cloninger and all listed in Gaston Co. were from his brother Adam. Moses Cloninger died in 1838. His wife Christina Little Cloninger then married Jessie Gant. Moses, Christina and their daughter Dorcas Cloninger who later married Alexander Routh are all buried at St. John's Cemetery. John lived at the Bob Conner house. Noah married Nancy Whitherspoon and they lived on the road from Claremont, N.C. to Highway 16 near Bolick's or Cross road. Noah's children moved to Gastonia today in Gaston Co.and Charlotte which is in today Mecklenburg Co. North Carolina. Noah's grandson operated a street car for years in Charlotte. Michael bought 149 acres from Ellis Smyre in 1858 and started his home place . He added more later, in Claremont. Nancy married Paul Setzer. Rufina and Elcanah were minors when their father John died in 1837. The court appointed brothers Thomas and John Jr. as guardians. Rufina married Logan Conner in 1840. Thomas was guardian of Elcanah in 1844 court since Elcanah was born in 1830. Elcanah married Mary Torrance. Elchanah was a civil war vet. He lost his right arm in one of the battles. He lived on the right side of 16 Highway on the first branch, this side of N.C. 150 Hyw. He died in 1905. His mother Dolly Summit Cloninger died in 1862, David her son was her administrator. Michael married Rosanna Bolick they had 9 children. Michael died 4 September 1885. He is buried at St. John's Cemetery in Catawba Co. N.C. John Jr. married Epsey Conner in 1838. He died 8 December 1900. Buried at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Catawba Co. North Carolina. John Cloninger died in 1837 all 12 children sold the 272 acres of his estate to Dr. A. Ray. Dr. ray sold the land to D.B. Gauther. He sold 35 acres to Marcus Sigmon and a tract to M.H. Morrow. Morrow sold the land on the creek to the Brinkley's. Three of John's sons moved out of state in the 1840's. Andrew, Philemon and Henry. Phileman is living in Vanderburgh Co. Indiana in 1860. His wife Louisa was born in Kentucky in 1814. They had 7 children all in Indiana. Their first son John was born in 1843. Andrew shows to be living out of state in the estate papers of his father John in 1840. Andrew had a land transaction with James Sorrells in Yalobusha Co. Ms. on 16 January 1845. Andrew is living alone in 1850, Yalobusha Co. Ms. at the age of 35 near his brother Henry. Apparently Andrew never married. He is listed living alone except for one census in 1870 of Yal. Co. Ms. Shows Alex J. Cloninger head owning $500 in real estate and $657 in personal property. Living with him the family of Rodger Martin with wife Mary and 3 children. Rodger and his family were born in Ms. In 1880 census of Tallahatchie Co. Ms. there is Audras Cloninger age 66 born in N.C. I believe this to be Andrew brother of Henry. Andrew owned several tracts of land in Mississippi. He had land transactions from 1845 to 1885. Henry Cloninger born around 1810 in Lincoln Co. North Carolina. Married Susannah Bolch 24 July 1836 in Lincoln Co. They had the following children in Lincoln Co; Jermima 1838, Susan 1839, Manerva 1842, Pinkney L. 1843. Margarett Dove 1847. The family headed west to Mississippi to Yalobusha Co. and had 3 more children; Joseph Lawshe 14 April 1849, Duly Josephine May 1850 and Mary Jane August 1857. Henry bought 150 acres of land from A.J. Goforth on 2 Nov. 1859. Henry paid $500 for the land. This tract of land is in the north west corner of Yal. Co. bordering the counties of Lafayette to the north and Calhoun to the east. I was told these early Cloninger families in Yalobusha Co. burned pine tree stumps to produce pitch which was sold for medical properties. Henry's occupation was listed as a miller in 1850. In 1860 as a farmer. The land was owned by Steve Hawkins in 1993. I think Henry died in 1875. I find his children selling their share of his estate to Robert Morehead on 13 Nov. 1875. All the deeds say Henry was desceased. The deeds to Robert Morehead; James and Susannah Sheilds of Tallahatchie Co. for $175, I think Susannah was Henry's wife because she gets the biggest share. Jermima Alexander of Lafayett Co. $20, J.H. and wife Susannah Moore of Yalobusha Co. and P.A. and wife D.J. Goodwin of Calhoun Co. combined on the same deed $40.( I believe this Susannah to be Henry's daughter.) Pinkney L. and wife Sarah Jane Cloninger of Tallahatchie Co. having two shares, one purchased from his sister Morgan D. Higgins $40, Joseph L. Cloninger and wife Laura A. Cloninger of Calhoun Co. $20. Two of Henry's children were not mentioned. Manerva and Mary Jane. Manerva is listed in the 1860 census of Yal. Co. age 17 . I think see died or moved away and married. I don't find a marriage record for her in Mississippi. Mary Jane was not married in 1875. Her mother probably received her share. Mary Jane was 17 at the time of her father's death in 1875. Henry Cloninger has many decendants in Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas. I would like to thank Henry Carlisle Cloninger of Grover North Carolina and Nard Brown Cloninger of Greenville South Carolina for the bulk of this information.
