Here I am in America—a European immigrant who once had a dream of freedom and prosperity for all. Unfortunately, all do not include those who are most entitled to enjoying freedom and prosperity of this land.
My predecessors
treated them with genocide, disease, starvation, hatred, demoralization and imprisonment on reservations where there is no life, no future and almost no hope. Today's prosperity of America is a direct result of the fact that the ancestors of our generation did not have to pay for the land they robbed the Indians of. They came, they decided to stay, they wanted the land, they took it. Some of them just wanted to be good neighbors and live peacefully side by side with the hosts of this land, they respected them and they were respected back. But the might of the greed of majority of white pioneers and war games between white invaders soon spoiled that coexistence. The times of unimaginable atrocities begun and lasted for several centuries. Although those times are over and all but forgotten, the problem is very far from being solved. As a matter of fact, I don't think it will ever be solved. Not by the government, not by the white people. It saddens me and makes me feel indebted to all those poor Indian souls. Even though I've arrived here long after the damage was done
It is unbelievable,
how little the white majority of this nation knows or cares about native people, their lifestyles, their everyday struggle to barely survive from day to day, from fall to spring, from year to year. (Not that the white population of Latin America or Africa cares about indigenous people of their lands. The situation is perhaps slightly better in Canada and Australia, although it's nothing to be envious of, either.)
This is a subject
that could (and should) take more than one page of the personal web site like mine. As a matter of fact, there is one wonderful source of the information on all things Indian. Please, visit that web site to learn more about the history of Indians and their relations with the white population of America.
I hope that my meager
effort will result in some stir in American brains and hearts. In the meantime,
please, read on about one program that has a chance to help Indians help themselves.
