Roxie to the Rescue: Cat 411

Diabetes is part of my every day life. I don't think about it all that much anymore, I just "live diabetes". Here are links to my writing about diabetes and insulin pumping and outside links as well, read in good health.

My Beloved Pump by Animas

Animas Insulin Pump (my pump company)

Things I love about Animas: nicest people ever work there, best pump on the market, only waterPROOF pump, best pump training, carbsmart, ezBG, combobolus and other features on pump, fast and easy supply order and shipping, excellent customer service, smallest pump on the market, screen size on the market and so much more. Things I don't like: website stuff (it is always behind on announcing new products), although you can finally order supplies online(!), the clip/holster on the 1200/1250 stinks.

By the way Animas says they are working on both and neither of my dislikes comes close to any how much I LOVE Animas as a company or a pump. Medtronic is too huge of a company - without a focus on diabetes and the Paradigm propritary cartridge proves money is more important than patients. Distronic has been recalled. Dana Pumps have been involved in a huge scandal. The only other company worth even comparing to the Animas is the Deltec, and that is just do to lack of recalls and scandals and comparable features of the pump, excepting size and waterproof status. But that is just my opinion.

These sites are links to companies that make cases or accessories for insulin pump OR they make products that I have found useful to use to carry or accessorize my pump, even though they are intended for other things, AKA pump convertables.

Micro Pump Case (check out matching diabetes bags, id bracelets and meter skins)

Fashion Pouches and Cases (I LOVE these!!!)

These and the Poire Pouches below are designed to hold today's tiny cell phones. I put the strap through my belt loop, tuck my pump in the pouch and off-I-go. I can also slip my liscense and ATM card in there for a quick trip to the store. (If this link doesn't go right to a page of pouches types "pouch" in the search engine on the page.)

Frio Insulin Pump Wallet

Klutz Knitting Book - Cell Phone Sock Pattern (fits a pump too!)

When all else fails make it yourself! I knit myself a very nice pump case based on the pattern in the Klutz book - the strap on the pattern is especially nice! You can also google "free cell phone knitting patterns" and you will find bunches of patterns you can knit up and convert for your pump. Knitting rocks!

Gerber Baby Mittens (These are the best for keeping your new Animas looking like a new Animas!)

These super soft tiny little mits are for infants so they don't scratch themselves. They are the perfect size for the Animas 1200, 1250 and 2020 pump. I like them better than baby socks because I can feel and press the pump buttons through the fabric. I have a mitt secured with a diaper pin in the front of every pair of pajama bottoms I own and I just leave them there, through the washer and dryer. I also use a mitt when I am going to tuck my pump in bicycle tights, control top panty hose or in my bra (which I almost never do - it just doesn't work out if you are a B cup or smaller).

Frio Insulin Wallets (these things are amazing, just soak the pouch and insulin stays cool for days!)

In the June 2005 issue of Diabetes Forecast there is an article about a soldier in Iraq who managed his type one diabetes with out access to any refrigeration using Frio pouches. A rather amazing endorsement.
