Roxie to the Rescue: Cat 411

I pretty much always have a reasons to live list going. I also usually have a list of reasons not to hurt myself in other ways, on purpose or by "accident" and a list of other things to do instead of hurting myself. It occured to me that maybe other crazy people... opps, I mean Mental Health Consumers (who comes up with these terms?) might be interested in seeing my list. I know that I have typed random things like, "reason to live" into Google evey once in a while and on occassion what I have found has been helpful, so here goes.

Sometimes it helps me want to hang in there if I know this site helps others - please e-mail me and let me know blogmistresskate@NOSPAMearthlink.net (take out the NOSPAM first). If you just want to critize, well, then, remember what they always say... "I you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Reasons to live (and attempt to live healthfully)

1)your cat, Roxie (she needs you, no one else is going to understand her kitty PTSD or put up with her)

2)you really do make a difference in some people's lives, even if you are just doing your job

3)somebody loves you, and if you think hard probably more than one somebody

4) you promised you wouldn't

Reasons not to hurt yourself (in anyway, accidently, on purpose or accidently on purpose)

1)because it wasn't your fault back when you were taught anger is pain and it is time to learn a new way

2)because you wouldn't want someone you love to do it and you need to remember that somebody loves you and doesn't want you to do it

3)because it will be just another reason to criticize yourself up when you are done

4)because you have other choices, that was the first lesson, remember? There are always other choices

Things to do when things are hard

1)write a journal or blog entry

2)write a poem

3)call someone (or just hold the phone)

4)go for a walk

5)play with the cat

6)read a book or listen to a book on tape

7) go for a bike ride

9)listen to music or the radio

10)research an obscure topic

11)write an e-mail

12)go be near people (as J. used to say - "let's go make fun of the normal people")

13)do something for someone else

14)HALT (figure out if you feel this way because you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired -- and fix it)

15)do work for work

16)pretend to shop online - fill that online cart and then close the browser - suckers

17)relax, ungrit your teeth, drop your shoulders down and breathe

18)watch a DVD

19)update your blog, not just blog entries

20)cry

21)laugh

22)take your medicine if you need to (that's what drugs are for, you're not any better for not taking them when you need them)

23)find the "Reason to Live" (yes, blog readers this is a real book by Melody Beattie, whom normal drives me loopy, but just editted this so it is okay) book and read it, find the cartoon of the teddy bear, read the Blue Days book

24)clean (clean? clean? you must be really depressed if you are cleaning! quick make a mess, hurry, hurry!)

25)take a shower (especially if it has been a while, good lordie, of course you're depressed, you stink!)

26)go next door (this could be really fun if you don't know your neighbors! bring them a fruitcake and say, "welcome to the neighborhood!" pretend you don't know they aren't new)

27)read some other people's blogs

28)go to the healthy place dot com chat room and lurk

29)draw, paint, sketch, scult, finger paint

30)sew (if you can find the sewing machine under all the junk in the other room)

30a) find the sewing machine

31)re-write this list

32)add things to this list

33) eat a banana (if you had to add something, why this?)

33a) go to the store and buy bananas

32)start over at the top of this list

Note to blog readers:

For the record I should probably say that there are hotlines and things you can call if you need them and that if you are seriously going to hurt yourself you had better call 911 right now or walk your butt into the emergency room, but you probably knew that, right?

blog entry from 12/07/05

21.95% of the people who visit this blog are looking for a reason to live.

In Reston, Virginia; Fort Collins, Colorado; Lombard, Illinois; Bay City, Michigan; Henderson, Nevada; San Diego, California; Ontario, Canada; and Bucharest, Romania someone is looking for a reason to live.

At Brandeis University, the University of Maryland and the Minneapolis College of Art And Design someone is looking for a reason to live.

At Dana Farber Cancer Center, Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital and a Department of Youth Service Facility in Chicago someone is looking for a reason to live.

Someone from all of these places looked here for a reason to live in the past 24 hours. If you think that you are alone in the search for meaning and purpose when you visit this blog you should know you are not. If one thing is for certain YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

You might find a reason to live or you might just find a reason to wait a while and give living another chance. One thing is for certain, you won't ever feel better if you give up now.

If you can't find a reason to at least wait and give life another chance then call your emergency service number (usually 9-1-1 in the USA) or walk into an Emergency Room at a hospital. If you can wait then in the morning (most of you seem to search for a reason to live in the middle of the night) then make an appointment with a/your therapist and try something simple to soothe the pain right now.

Call a friend, go for a walk, run into the store and buy yourself some flowers. What the heck, google 1-800-flowers and send some to yourself, at least you will want to wait around and see them. Go watch your kids sleep or cuddle up with your pet. No kids or pet? Time to do something about that, google www.petfinder.org and start looking. No pets allowed or don't like animals? Go to www.homestarrunner.com and laugh at the funny cartoons. Don't like cartoons? Go to audible.com and download a book to listen to or go to your favorite music site (Itunes? Yahoo music?) and find a song to soothe you. (Try Janis Joplin's Little Girl Blue). None of that your style? Try praying, writing a letter, drawing a picture or learning to cross your eyes. Go to Bored.com and try all the different sites listed until you laugh.

I hope you feel better soon.

Ahhh... the joys of depression and PTSD, constant suicidal thoughts when I am down and the occassional self injurious thought even when things are okay. I know I am not alone on this, but I always feel alone. I hope reading my list helps you.

When the world seems to be spinning out of control, shut your eyes and enjoy the ride.
