Veterinarian Dr. Patricia Parker
hosted Kayla's Club during a tour
of Clear Creek Animal Hospital
in Seabrook, Texas.
Dr.Parker said
more and more women
become veterinarians
(or "vets" for short).
She gave us lots of hand-outs
about animals and pet care.
Come along on Kayla's Club tour
of Clear Creek Animal Hospital

Kayla served as a model patient
as we listened to her heart.
Dogs' hearts pulse between
60 and 160 beats per minute
based on age, size and activity.
A human's pulse is
60 to 100 beats per minute.
Kayla's heart beat fast
because she was nervous.
A dog's temperature runs
about 100 to 102.5 degrees F.
That would be a fever for us
because our normal temperature
is 98.6 degrees.

Dr. Parker takes care
of all kinds of animals.
She showed us X-rays taken
of a pet snake and a pet turtle
who ate the wrong things and
had tummy blockages.
Pets eat many crazy things
including glasses, books,
furniture, rugs, soda cans, CDs
and, yes, even homework!
|
Vets have labs for sampling '
an animal's blood, urine, and stool.
They also check for very tiny and
harmful parasites inside an animal's organs.
Dr. Parker showed us a heart with
long, spaghetti-like strings inside.
Those were heartworms caused by mosquitos.
Pets should be given monthly pills
to prevent heartworms
and other dangerous pests
like fleas and ticks.

Just like humans,
dogs stay in the hospital
when they are very sick.
We visited a dog who had cancer.
We were surprised to learn that pets can have the same illnesses as humans such as cancer, diabetes, epilepsy and depression.
Many pets take daily pills or shots for health problems.
|
We saw many unusual things at the vet clinic, including this dog skeleton.
We really enjoyed our visit to Clear Creek Animal Hospital and thank Dr. Parker and her staff for all their time and kindness.
We learned so much!
Remember: Always take your pet to the vet for a yearly exam
