We have lots of fun at Kayla's Club.
We do projects, go on field trips
and listen to guest speakers.
One place we visited was
Wildlife Rehab and Education.
Volunteer rehabbers study three years
to get federal and state permits to care
for wild animals and birds.
Rehabbers take care of sick or injured wildlife
then release them back into nature when well.
Sometimes a bird or animal cannot go back
to the wild because of a bad injury.
Rehabbers keep such wildlife for school talks
--- like this one to Kayla's Club.
Rehabber Sharon shows us a hawk,
also called a raptor because they eat prey.
See Sharon's thick gloves?
Without them, the hawk's sharp claws,
or talons, would cut her hands

The Greater Houston Search and Rescue Dogs
and handlers came to Kayla's Club.
These "hero hounds" demonstrated
how they find lost kids or people
trapped during disasters
like the World Trade Center collapse.
Some of these teams went to the
2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City
to be ready in case of emergency.
Search dogs do not wear any masks
or other protection while working
-- although their human handlers do.
After a successful practice or rescue,
hero hounds just want to play!!

Kayla's Club participated at a pet fair
at the Harris County shelter.
We saw many adorable dogs and cats
of all ages waiting for adoption.
We couldn't take them all,
but we were able to find a home
for a cute black kitty!
Each year millions of pets
are put to sleep because
they are homeless.
Kids can help solve this problem
by having their pets spayed or neutered
so they cannot have babies.
We also can adopt new pets from
shelters or foster homes
-- not from stores or
backyard breeders.
Remember, Kayla was adopted!
And she's wonderful!
