Other Questions, FAQs

Tom or Thomas? I go by Tom. My Boeing e-mail is Thomas..., so I will also answer to that, but Tom is fine. Mr. Dickens is my Father.
What do the different colors mean in the above schedule mean? No special meaning; I just wanted contrasting colors to easily see the different classes.
Which UOP campuses do I teach at? I work in Renton (Boeing, 10-16 building), so I teach at both the SouthCenter and Factoria UOP campuses.

Do you accept late homework? With prior arrangement I may accept homework up to one week late. It will only receive half credit.
Are you sure you don't accept late homework? With prior arrangement I may accept homework up to one week late. It will only receive half credit.
MLA style for papers? My primary concern is having papers written very clearly, concisely, and professionally, with precise use of the English language. I have written dozens of technical papers but I am not an expert on MLA. What I have experienced is that each conference or publication will specify their required formatting. A well-written and organized paper can easily be formatted into the desired format.
Do I teach on-line? I am currently looking into the UOP on-line program and may teach some classes that way in the future, but I plan to continue my primary focus on in-class teaching.
Oh well, I dropped out of the on-line certification program due to the amount of time they required; I could not keep up while working, seeing my family, and keeping my sanity.
Can we leave at 8:30? Other teachers do this. I plan on running classes from 6:00 to 10:00 every night. I've been known to stay until 10:30 answering questions from interested students.
Can we eat in class? I understand working full-time and being a night-time student (I got two degrees that way myself). Feel free to eat but please don't be a distraction to the class.
Do I grade on a curve? No. I encourage working together and have been known to give an entire class A's (I have also given F's, so don't expect an easy A). Of course you are to do your own work, but learn from other students and also help teach them; that's the best way to learn.
Am I going to teach more classes for a particular group? I would like to encounter a group of students more than once on their journey to their degrees. I offer to teach classes as they come up depending on what classes I'm approved to teach, the campus location, and conflicts that I have. Hopefully I will be able to see a group of students in multiple classes.
Your first assignment is an e-mail.

What do you want and why?

What naming convention should we use for attached files for assignments?

I like to do all grading via e-mail. This enables me to get feedback to you from your WS2 paper, for example, before WS3, so you can incorporate the feedback into your next paper.

Please see my e-mail conventions wep-page for the details. Thanks for doing this, it really helps me streamline my grading process.

Do you have any hints on specific details on wtiring papers. Yes, I've put together a web-page, Hints on Writing Papers.
Do I allow cell phones in class? I may need to receive a call from work or my spouse. Yes, but if a cell phone rings in my class, I will answer it.
