Spear
line:
The name "Spear" is said to have been given to Kalman Gershon Saperstin's
son Jacob upon his arrival in East Boston in the mid-1880s. Kalman Gershon
Saperstin? (Abt 1840--1917) apparently remained in Russia with a second
wife with whom he had three children: a rabbi son, one daughter, and a
son who was an official in the Communist government. A letter from him?
sent to his half-niece, Liz Sisson, in the 1940s? was never answered.
Rumored to have stolen "from orphans and widows," Jacob Spear (Abt
1860, Russia--5 January 1953, Malden, Mass.) was supposedly the only living
of 13 children from his well-off Jewish farmer father (Kalman Gershom)'s
first marriage. So he was married into a "good" family. He and his wife,
the eldest child of Samuel & Shiffra Rosenberg, Mariam (Mary) Rosenberg
Spear (Abt 1857--September 1949, Malden, Mass.) set sail for the U.S. from
Russia, via England, with their first child (Morris Speare 1884, Russia--27
February 1974, Washington, D.C.) and the other Rosenbergs
(ca. 1887-1888).

Rosenberg
line:
Schmeil-Tsui ben Lafe Rosenberg (Abt 1836--17 June 1916) and his
wife Shiffra (Abt 1838--March 1921), of *Bialastok, Russia, had nine children:
Mariam (Mary) R. Spear, Eliot (Eli) R., Morris R., Archie R., Sarah R.,
Elizabeth R., Millie R. Aronson, and Rachael (Rae) R. Mandelbaum. Samuel
& Shiffra arrived in East Boston with their children (ca. 1887-1888).
With them, at least? the oldest 2 (Mary & Eli) were married with children.

Mandelstam
line:
Bessie Davidson (Abt 4 March 1836--24 June 1919), daughter of Issac
& Rachel Davidson, married Wolf Mandelstam (abt 1800--?). Wolf &
Bessie were parents to Abraham Mandelstam (Abt 1 March 1830, Latvia/Russia--31
December 1913) who, with wife Bascha (Bessie) (1836, Latvia/Russia--24
June 1919, Boston), had 3 children: Isaac Wolf, Sarah, and Mary.
Issac Wolf Mandelstam (19 August 1859, Riga, Russia--22 April 1955,
Boston) married Rose Blumenthal (1865, Kouna, Gerberna, Russia--17 November
1936, Boston) on 19 June 1889. They sailed together on the S.S. Augusta
Victoria & arrived at Ellis Island in September 1890 and are commemorated
there (separately): Issac, from Russia on panel 271, & Rose,
from Latvia on panel 245 (see the American
Immigrant Wall of Honor). Isaac's father, Abraham, came to U.S.
afterwards.
