It was at a Temple Board meeting in 1986 that Rabbi Bernard Kligfeld (dec.) remarked "Wouldn't it be nice to have a biblical garden." After almost 2 years of research and planning the garden was designed, planted and has since been maintained by Col. Hy Mandell, USA Rtd. Each year, since the original planting, on Tu B'Shevat, a new planting is made with appropriate ceremony. There are now over 40 trees, bushes and other plants in the garden. Signs in Hebrew and English quoting the biblical reference are placed with plantings. Examples of these are the rare frankincense and henna, the etrog (citron), acacia, cassia, almond, fig, myrtle, pomegranate, carob, olive, aloe and palm. All fruit harvested is shared by the congregation and is also used for Succah decoration. Left on the garden site are 2 beautiful examples of plants native to our Saguaro Desert only, the Saguaro and the Ocotillo, part of the original landscaping. We receive great pleasure when groups and individuals from synagogues, churches and schools tour the garden.
