Summary:It is the fourteenth day of the game and the players are in the confessional booth talking about how much they miss outside contact. Darwin mentions that they have no exposure to current events, Al misses his wife and kids and Bill feels guilty because when he left his mother was ill. Heather sums up the situation the most. "I miss home." she says. "I want to go home. But, damn it, I want to win this money. I want to win this game. Everyone meets outside and Anderson tells them that he needs volunteers for the next game. He needs three swimmers, three runners and someone who likes to talk. Al immediately volunteers to be the talker but Darwin doesn't want him to be and supports Katie be the talker instead. In the end, Katie is the talker, Bill, Bribs and Darwin are the swimmers and Dorothy, Elavia and Rob are the runners. Al, Heather and Myra get left behind. Al is extremely angry at Darwin and upset at being left out. Heather simply hopes that the other players won't be offered an Exemption. Anderson leads the players to the side of the hotel pool where a board has been set up and explains the game to them. The three runners will have to go through the town of Vicenza looking for the answers to questions. When they have the answer, they will call Katie by cell phone and tell her the answers. There are blanks for the answers on the board and Katie has magnetic letters to put in them. Some of the letter blanks are marked and, after all three questions have been answered, Katie must take the letters from the marked spaces and use them to form the answer to a fourth question. If they manage to answer all four questions before time runs out, 20 thousand will be added to the pot. Anderson, however, will not be timing them. The timing will be performed by the swimmers. They will have to tread water in the pool. Every five minutes, a 1.1 pound weight (1/2 kilogram) will be hung around the neck of one of the swimmers. The game will continue until the last swimmer has given up. Katie is stunned and obviously feels the pressure but Dorothy, Elavia and Rob head out for the starting point. Bill, Bribs and Darwin enter the pool. Bill tells everyone that he swam for over an hour in a full flight suit while in the Navy and so he thinks he can handle the most weight. He decides to take the weights first. Question 1 - Next to the Tempio di San Lorenzo there is a statue of a poet. What is his name? Question 2 - Directly behind the Arco del Scaletti, how many stairs lead up to the top of the hill? Question 3 - Which famous author's tomb lies in de Tempio di Santa Corona? Final Question - Their love was sealed with "a righteous kiss". The three runners get into position and Anderson tells the swimmers to get into the water. He then reads the first question. "Next to the Tempio di San Lorenzo there is a statue of a poet. What is his name?" Rob briefly studies a map then takes off running. (We are told that only one runner can be out at a time and that they can't take the map with them.) Rob gets lost at first and blames it on having the map upside down. Back at the pool, Bill is given the first weight, which he says weighs about 15 pounds. Unfortunately, he gives out almost immediately and is out at 7 minutes and 32 seconds having only ever carried one weight. Rob gets to the statue and finds the answer; Giacomo Zanella. He starts back to where the others are waiting. Meanwhile, in an interview, we see Bribs saying he is suspicious of Bill because he gave out so soon. Bill, for his part, simply says he isn't as young as he used to be. Katie calls Elavia and tells her they already have one swimmer down. Darwin says he will start taking the weights. Rob gets back and calls Katie, telling her the answer is "Giacomo Zanello". She initially misunderstands the Z as a V but everyone is confused when Anderson continues to tell them their answer is wrong. From the pool, Darwin suggests changing the final O to an A, which gives them the correct answer. Anderson gives them the next question: "Directly behind the Arco del Scaletti, how many stairs lead up to the top of the hill?". Dorothy runs off to find the answer. Katie asks Darwin how he knew the final letter should be an A and he responds with "Because I'm the Mole!" Dorothy, unfortunately, can't find the Arco del Scaletti. She asks several people but no one seems to know where it is. Darwin is also having problems and Bribs suggests that they try to guess the answer since they know it is a number spelled out and they know the number of letters. Dorothy never does find the location. She gets sick, either from nerves or from the exertion, and leans over the side of a bridge and throws up. She then simply sits down on the side of the road and curls up, holding her knees to her chest. After some time guessing, Katie manages to find the correct answer without Dorothy; one hundred and eighty three. Anderson now gives them the third question: "Which famous author's tomb lies in de Tempio di Santa Corona?". He tells them that they do not have to enter the church; the name is written on the outside. Elavia runs for the temple. By this point Darwin has given out. He lasted for 35 minutes with six weights. Bribs yells for Katie to "Tell her to run quick!" Dorothy is still sitting beside the road. Elavia can't find the church at first but gets directions from someone. However, once there she cannot find the name of the author and so asks someone standing outside the church. She is told "Luigi Da Porta". Bribs has suggested to Katie that she go ahead and move the letters they know they will be using for the final answer to the second board. Elavia calls and she puts the final answer on the board, only to be told by Anderson it was wrong! She questions Elavia who admits she got the answer from someone at the church instead of finding it herself. From the pool, Bribs suggests changing the final letter from A to O and Anderson confirms that this gives them the correct answer. Now, they get their final clue: "Their love was sealed with 'a righteous kiss'". Katie quickly realizes that the answer is "Romeo and Juliet" but must figure out how to spell it in Italian. She immediately has trouble in that she can't figure out how to spell "Juliet". Bribs tells her to make sure she has all of the letters and she assures him she does but Anderson shows us that she has left a "G" behind. In the end, Katie is unable to get the correct answer. Bribs is nearly exhausted and even Anderson is starting to look concerned for him when he finally gives out and stops. He had been treading water for 1 hour and 13 minutes and was carrying 6 weights. The players fail the game. Once the runners are back, Anderson points out the missing "G" and gives them the correct answer: "Giulietta e Romeo". Bill, Bribs and Darwin all find it suspicious that Katie missed the "G", especially considering that she is a Spanish teacher and Spanish is similar to Italian. Katie, for her part, is in tears, saying "I feel like an idiot." The others ask Elavia about her answer and she admits that she never saw the authors name herself. She only repeated what the person outside the church told her. Anderson tells them that many of the locals consider Luigi Da Porto to be the true author of Romeo and Juliet and that Shakespeare stole the story. In the end, Anderson congratulates the players. "Good effort." he tells them, but adds "Certainly a lot of questions were raised." Back in the confessional, Al is still upset at Darwin for keeping him out of the game and wants to confront him about it. He and Darwin then have a big argument in which Al blames Darwin for trying to keep him out of the game and Darwin says he simply wanted someone else to take the lead and that it wasn't a personal attack on Al. In the end Al says he understands what Darwin was trying to do and they shake hands on it. Darwin is later seen in the confessional saying that he hopes the confrontation is over.

The next day, the players are on their way out when Heather finds a message on the side of their van, created using the magnetic letters from the previous day's game. All the G's are missing from the message. She calls the others over and they replace the missing letters. "Mighty Goliath took a big fall. David or defeat, it's your call. M." Katie is annoyed but suggests that they may be throwing rocks. Everyone notes the Mole's message in their journals and Anderson leads the three who were not involved in the previous day's game, Al, Heather and Myra, to their next destination. He leads them to the basement of a villa where they find three cage-like cells. Al starts laughing and all three of them realize what the next game obviously is. Anderson tells them that they will be locked in the cells. There is a key hanging from the light in the middle of the room but if the light is broken all of the lights in the room will go out. There is an ultraviolet light that will stay on and the key is painted in florescent paint so they will be able to see it. They have three hours to get out of the cells and, if they do, 40 thousand will be added to the pot. If they do not, they will have to spend the night in the cells. There is one other catch. The producers have arranged for everyone to be able to make a phone call home that evening. If they are still in their cells, they will not be able to participate in the call. In an interview, Al talks about how much he wants to talk to his wife and Heather mentions that they have not had any contact with home in over two weeks. The three are locked in separate cells then Anderson takes the torch, blows it out, and leaves. All three of them start talking at once and Al tries to take charge of things by asking what everyone has in their cells but no one seems to be paying much attention to him. Myra does say there is a slingshot hanging from one wall outside of her cell and a string of rocks hanging from another. Heather takes the pillowcase off of her pillow and then removes the shoelaces from her shoes. Myra manages to get a strip of wood off of her cot and Al finds a hacksaw hanging above his cell. Heather finds a coat hanger in her cell and throws it to Myra. Myra ties the coat hanger to the strip of wood from her cot with her shoelaces and uses it to hook the slingshot from the wall, having first thrown her blanket out on the floor under it in case it falls. Meanwhile, Heather has tied her shoelaces together and tied them to her shoe, which she has tossed into a basket which is in the center of the room and directly under the key. She figures that this way she will be able to pull the basket with the key to her once it falls. Al suggests that all three of them spread their blankets out around the basket in case the key misses the basket. They do so, then Myra attempts to shoot the light with the slingshot, only to discover that it is a non-working prop. The three then start simply throwing rocks at the light. Al eventually pops the light with a rock and the key falls into the basket. Heather is able to pull the key to her cell with her shoe and she opens her cell and steps out. Immediately, the lights come back on and Anderson steps into the room. Heather gets a look of dread on her face as she seems to know what is about to happen. Anderson congratulates her on getting out of the cell then makes her an offer. He will give her an Exemption if she will take the key and walk away with him right then, leaving Al and Myra stranded in their cells overnight. With a subdued expression, she turns him down. Anderson seems surprised that she has turned down the Exemption. "That's kind of unheard of." he says. With her head down, she releases first Al then Myra; both of whom are also stunned. "You're my new hero." says Al as Myra gives her a hug. Heather explains that she couldn't leave them there, knowing that they would miss the chance to talk to their loved ones back home. Even if she goes at the next Execution, she says she couldn't live with herself if she did that. "You're warming my shriveled little heart." says Anderson as the four of them leave the room together. All of the other players also seem amazed when Al tells them of Heather's sacrifice over dinner. Then, it is time for everyone to talk to someone at home. Dorothy talks to her family (Raymond, Kioen and Daniel), Bribs to his mother (Terri), Darwin to his wife (Lindsay) and Elavia and Heather to their boyfriends (Brian and Nathan). Al talks to his wife (Robin) and he shows her a picture of her he is carrying around and Myra talks to her sister (Carol) who jokes that she is telling everyone that Myra has joined the CIA. Rob talks to his brother (Andy) but says he really couldn't say anything about where he was. Bill talks to his wife (Shirley) and finds out that his mother is doing fine. Finally, Katie talks to her parents (Judy and Ron). Later, we see that Bribs and Darwin have formed a Coalition and are comparing their answers from the quizzes. Even so, Darwin later admits that he can't trust anyone. The Execution dinner is held outside and Anderson talks to everyone asking who they talked to the night before. Elavia mentions her boyfriend Brian and several players comment that she had been careful not to mention his name before and are surprised that she finally gave it out. Anderson asks Rob (whose stated occupation is "magician") to show him a trick, telling him "If this freaks me out, I'm going to hit you." Rob shows Anderson a card trick and Anderson hits him. Rob later admits that he likes the dinners they have together because they all talk and are friendly with each other. He also says that he has no idea as to who the Mole is. And so, it is time for the Execution Quiz. The Quiz:During the quiz, Al says that he suspects Elavia. Katie suspects Dorothy since she got lost in the Think or Sink Game and Dorothy suspects Bill since he gave up so fast in the same game. We then see Katie again and she says that she also suspects Heather and Bribs says that he suspects her because she used her shoe to get the basket with the key in the Get the Key Game, guaranteeing that she would be offered the Exemption. Al and Bill both suspect Elavia because she finally mentioned her boyfriends name and a related question appeared on the quiz that evening. Al is also suspicious of Myra because she is quiet. Rob says it could be anybody. Then, it is time for the Execution. Anderson mentions that the pot is now at 206 thousand and reminds them that Heather turned down the Exemption. He sits down and starts typing in names. Dorothy, Katie, Al and Bribs all get a green screen. The music changes as Heather's name is typed in but she gets a green as well. (We see Darwin carefully note this in his journal.) Then, Rob's name is entered and the red thumbprint appears. With a single "Damn!" Rob gets up and follows Anderson out. The others talk about Rob and it seems that most of them will miss him. Katie says she is surprised to see him go, Myra says that he brought a lot to the game and Darwin mentions that he was one of his three favorite players. Al says that Rob's "Damn!" was a Christopher Walken impression and that he did it as a joke, even though players aren't supposed to say anything when they are Executed. As they talk, we see several scenes of Rob shooting the crossbow, wearing his cow suit, fighting Little Jane and, finally, doing a Christopher Walken impression and talking about the Burn Bags Game. As Anderson helps Rob into the car, he tells him "Say hi to Christopher Walken for me." And so night falls on Villa Cordellina. But, the players cannot sleep easily. Someone among them is The Mole. Suspicion and Analysis:Al is very upset at being left out of the Think or Sink Game. Bill says he is a good swimmer but can only tread water for an extremely short time in the Think or Sink Game. Rob gets the last letter wrong to his question in the Think or Sink Game. (Of course, he is Executed so can't be the Mole.) Darwin blocks Al from participating in the Think or Sink Game and is able to figure out the correct answer to Rob's question in the same game. Dorothy gets lost in the Think or Sink Game and never gets the answer. Bribs is able to guess the answer to Dorothy's question. Elavia doesn't read the answer to her question in the Think or Sink Game and instead asks a bystander for the answer, getting the last letter wrong. Bribs is able to guess the correct last letter in Elavia's answer. Katie fails to move over all of the letters in the Think or Sink Game, despite assuring Bribs several times that she has. She also cannot figure out the correct Italian spelling of "Romeo and Juliet" despite being a Spanish teacher (Spanish being similar to Italian.) The message from the Mole left on the side of the van was missing the letter "G", just as Katie had missed the letter "G" in the Think or Sink Game. Al finds a hacksaw in the Get the Key Game then never does anything with it. Heather ties her shoelaces together and gets her shoe into the basket, guaranteeing that she will get out of her cell first and be offered the Exemption. Despite saying many times that she wants an Exemption, Heather turns one down after being offered one after the Get the Key Game. Elavia finally mentions her boyfriends name, just before a question requiring that information appears on the Mole quiz. Be seeing you... |
