I chose not to come up with a custom race or class and went with a standard Redguard Agent as it looked to be the closest to how I wanted to play the game. I took the Tower as my birth sign, which in retrospect was probably not the best choice as the abilities it grants turned out to be less useful than I thought they would be. Still, here is the character I started with:

My version of the game is at 1.2.0722. I played on a P4 1.7 GHz with 512 Meg of RAM, 80 Meg HD and a 64 Meg ATI Raedeon graphics card.
Early in the game I ran and jumped as much as possible. This had the advantage of rapidly boosting my Acrobatics and Athletics skills. I also snuck around town as much as possible which had the same effect on my Sneak skill. Since Acrobatics and Sneak are both Major skills for my character this had the effect of letting me gain my first few levels fairly quickly. I only did this for the first few levels since the game matches your opponents to your overall level and I didn't want to outstrip the rest of my skill levels.
