Overview:When Boone wants to tell Shannon what he and Locke have discovered in the jungle, both of their lives are placed in danger and the secrets of their past are revealed. Meanwhile, Kate learns a secret of another survivor. Quotes:He's very competent. We don't want to make an enemy of him. We're going to want him on our side. --- John Locke I've been having some, um, major digestive issues. Sorry. I'm sneakier than I give myself credit for. --- John Locke Locke? The guy is a freak of nature; highly disturbed. The chances are he probably killed all his mates at the post office the day his mom forgot to put a cookie in his lunch tin. That was my first impression anyway. And then, he saved my life. Summary:Sayid approaches Shannon with a box. He gives it to her, saying that it is a thank-you gift for helping him with the translations. The box contains shoes and she observes that they are her size and comments that her feet are swelling. Boone is watching them, an angry expression on his face. He is interrupted by Hurley who asks if he and Locke are still hunting boar. Boone says they are. Hurley then asks why they aren't coming back with any. Boone points out that the boar are wild animals but Hurley responds by saying that the rest of them need food and that "this isn't a game". Hurley leaves and Boone stares into the distance.
Boone intercepts Sayid and tells him to stay away from Shannon. Sayid seems to be more amused by this than threatened. Before things can escalate further, Locke calls Boone away, saying he has found some tracks. As they leave, Locke asks what is going on. Boone says that Sayid was hitting on Shannon and that he didn't like it. Locke tells him to not antagonize Sayid because "we're going to need him on our side". Boone tells Locke that the others are starting to wonder why they never come back with any boar. Locke says that the others have plenty of food and that what they are doing is more important. The two move aside some branches that they have used to hide the mysterious hatch. Elsewhere, Hurley finds Jack and tells him that he has been having problems with his stomach. He tells Jack what he has been eating and Jack suggests that he eat more protein. Hurley says that they haven't had any boar meat lately and Jack says that Jin has been catching plenty of fish. Hurley says that Jin hasn't liked him since he turned down the sea urchin that Jin offered him shortly after they crashed. Jack seems bemused by this. Hurley, who has been collecting large leaves throughout this scene, abruptly excuses himself and runs into the jungle. Jack continues on his way and finds Kate, slowly walking through the jungle and collecting items from the ground. He watches from a distance until she stops and says that she knows he is there. Jack responds that he wasn't hiding; he just didn't want to interrupt what she was doing. She says it isn't a secret and he says that with her it is sometimes hard to tell. She shows him that she has been collecting passion fruit seeds. Jack asks what they are for and she offers to show him. She leads him to where Sun is working in a garden. Kate explains that she found Sun's garden recently and has been helping her. She says that Sun has planted a grove of trees elsewhere. Jack compliments Sun on her garden and observes that they will need all the food they can get since the boar is running out. Kate wonders if the boar is really running out or if Locke has simply decided to not catch it for them anymore. Jack asks what she means and she speculates that Locke may want to keep what boar is left for himself. Elsewhere, Locke and Boone are still staring at the hatch in the ground. Locke is mixing up something in a bowl. Boone asks what it is and Locke says it is for later. Boone asks how long they plan to do nothing but stare at the hatch. Locke tells him about Michelangelo, who stared at the block of marble that eventually became the statue of David for months before starting work. Boone says he hopes they won't stare at the hatch for months. Locke puts the bowl down and wonders aloud how to open a hatch with no handle, no latch and no discernable way of opening it.
Hurley catches up with Jin, who is making his way though the jungle with a net. Hurley tries to explain that he knows Jin is upset over the sea urchin incident and that he isn't asking Jin for anything; he just wants Jin to show him where he gets the fish. Jin doesn't seem to understand what Hurley wants and points back into the jungle. Jin, seemingly amused, continues on his way. Hurley follows. Elsewhere in the jungle, Locke and Boone are walking. Boone wants to tell the others what they have found but Locke insists that they "aren't ready" for that yet. Boone then says he wants to at least tell Shannon because he doesn't like lying to her. Locke asks if he means that he doesn't like the way she makes him feel when he lies to her. Boone says he is going to tell Shannon everything. Locke asks if he is prepared to face the repercussions of that and Boone says he is. Locke indicates agreement but, when Boone starts to walk away, he hits him over the back of his head, knocking him unconscious. When Boone awakens he finds himself tied up. Locke watches from nearby, once again stirring the mixture in the bowl. Boone demands to know what is going on and says that he won't tell anyone what they found. Locke says he is doing what he is for Boone's own good. He grabs Boone and puts some of the mixture from the bowl on the wound on Boone's head, commenting that he doesn't want an infection. Locke then picks up his pack and prepares to leave. Boone protests that Locke can't leave him there. Locke pulls a knife and throws it into the ground in front of Boone. He says that Boone can use it to free himself when he becomes sufficiently motivated. He then says that the camp is four miles to the west and leaves. Boone yells for help.
On another part of the island, Kate is helping Sun with her garden. Kate is talking randomly and mentions that she had planned to fly to Bali and spend some time exploring the island. She observes that she should be careful what she wishes for. Sun smiles at this. Kate suddenly realizes that Sun understood what she said and confronts Sun with the fact that she knows English. Sun tries to avoid her but eventually confirms that she does; begging Kate not to tell anyone. Meanwhile, Hurley is on a beach with Jin and attempting to fish. Jin has caught several fish in a net while Hurley, using a makeshift net made from a shirt on a tree branch, is having no luck. Hurley becomes frustrated and, yelling to Jin that he won, starts to wade back ashore. Suddenly he starts yelling in pain; he has stepped on a sea urchin. Jin rushes to him and helps him to shore but Hurley keeps yelling for Jin to "pee on it!", saying that doing so is the only way to stop the infection. Jin tries to examine the wound but Hurley continues to yell "pee on it!" Elsewhere, Sayid has used a magnet and a sewing needle to make a compass. He is examining the maps he took from Danielle when he hears something in the jungle nearby. He pulls his knife only to find it is Locke. Locke tells Sayid that Boone told him to take the afternoon off; Boone is out hunting on his own. Sayid, in disbelief, asks if Locke thinks Boone will catch anything. Locke says no. Locke sees Sayid's makeshift compass and says that he hasn't seen anything like that since he was a Weeblo. He explains to Sayid that a Weeblo is between a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout and that it was there he learned to tie knots, identify birds and the like. He observes in passing that he wasn't the most popular kid. Sayid says he is trying to make sense out of Danielle's map but that there doesn't seem to be any sense to make. Locke gives him his compass, saying that it may help. Sayid asks Locke if he doesn't need it. Locke says he doesn't anymore and leaves. Back in the jungle, Boone is yelling for help when he hears Shannon calling him. He yells for her and learns that she too is tied up in the jungle. Suddenly, they both hear the "thing"; the unknown creature in the jungle. Shannon yells for help and Boone strains against the ropes, trying to reach the knife. The ropes tighten around his neck and painfully pull on his arm but with a final lunge he gets the knife. He quickly cuts himself free and runs to where Shannon is tied. He cuts her free as well and they run. They get into the denser jungle and duck for cover in a cluster of trees. The thing seems to lose sight of them but Boone can still see its shadow overhead. Then, the thing begins to slam into the trees. Shannon screams. Elsewhere, Sayid catches up with Jack, who is walking through the jungle. He asks Jack if he knows which way north is. Jack thinks a moment then points in a direction. Sayid agrees then shows him the compass Locke gave him. The compass is pointing in a completely different direction. Sayid says that a magnetic anomaly could account for a deviation of a few degrees but nothing like this. He says the compass must be defective. Jack asks where the compass came from and Sayid tells him that Locke gave it to him. Jack asks where he saw Locke and Sayid says it was about a mile to the east. At least, he thinks it was the east... Back in the jungle, the thing seems to have gone. Boone and Shannon cautiously exit the cluster of trees. Shannon asks Boone what he did to piss Locke off and Boone says he didn't do anything.
Jack finds Locke sitting on the beach, staring out to sea. Jack comments that he hasn't had time to talk to Locke lately and Locke says Jack is busy. Jack says the same about Locke. Jack asks Locke if he knows where Boone is and Locke says he hasn't seen him. Jack then asks about the boar hunting and Locke says that he is afraid the boar are leaving their valley. The boar, he says, are smart and know when a new predator has arrived. Jack asks if he means man and Locke acknowledges "the most dangerous predator of all". Kate is still talking to Sun. Sun says that only Michael knows about her knowledge of English and begs Kate not to tell Jin. Kate says she can keep a secret but asks why Jin doesn't know. Sun says that it is complicated but that she can't tell him. Kate asks why and Sun asks if she has ever lied to a man she loved. Kate says nothing. On the fishing beach, Hurley seems to have somewhat recovered from his injury. Jin brings him something and Hurley discovers that it is urchin. Hurley says something about it being payback and reluctantly takes it. After a long pause, he eats it. There is another pause then he suddenly doubles over and throws up. Jin takes his shoulder in concern. On Lostaway beach, Jack brings some aspirin to Charlie. He asks how Charlie is doing then asks what he thinks of Locke. Charlie says he originally thought Locke was insane but now thinks he is the one who will save all of them. Later, at the caves, Hurley arrives to find Michael looking through a small box. Michael found his own luggage. Hurley tells him if he wants something to wish on his worst enemy, tell them to step on a sea urchin. Jin approaches and hands Hurley a fish. He is stunned by the gesture and even more stunned when he realizes that the fish has already been cleaned. He thanks Jin but Jin has already left to join Sun. Jin and Sun walk past Jack, talking quietly together. Jack goes up to Kate and comments that they look happy. He then gives Kate a handful of guava seeds, saying that every garden needs guava. Still in the jungle, Shannon is demanding to know what is going on. Boone finally tells her about the hatch but is still trying to defend Locke; saying that he is the only one who knows what is going on. Their conversation is interrupted when several trees are ripped from the ground behind them. They hear the thing howl and both of them run. Boone escapes but Shannon is pulled into the air; her screams abruptly cutting off. Somewhat later, Boone is running through the jungle calling Shannon's name.
Boone finds a trail of blood and follows it to where Shannon's body is lying across some rocks in a stream. He runs to it, calling her name then holds her body as he cries. Later, still covered in blood, Boone staggers through the jungle. He emerges near the caves and sees Locke sitting alone beside a fire. With a yell, Boone pulls his knife and charges him but Locke easily blocks the attack and grabs him. Boone yells that the thing killed her and demands to know why Locke kidnapped her. Locke, with what seems to be genuine curiosity, asks what Boone means. Boone says that he saw Shannon die and Locke, eyes gleaming, asks if that is what it made him see. Boone continues to insist that Shannon died and Locke asks if that was so, why is there no blood on him. Boone looks down and sees that the blood is gone. Suddenly frightened, he demands to know what is happening. Locke says that he doesn't know; Boone will have to tell him. But, as for Shannon... Locke points to where Shannon and Sayid have arrived to fill water bottles. Shannon is completely unharmed. Boone realizes that the mixture Locke put on his head wound made him see things. Locke says that he gave Boone an experience that was necessary for his survival on the island. He asks Boone what he saw and Boone says he saw Shannon die. "How did you feel?" asks Locke. "When she died." Locke picks up his pack and start to leave camp. "Follow me." he tells Boone. Boone watches Shannon and Sayid for a moment, then turns and follows Locke into the jungle.
