Overview:

Claire begins having nightmares which start to become all too real. Hurley performs a census of the survivors and discovers that one of them has an unexpected secret.

Quotes:

Is this about your census?
Yeah, you know, I thought it would be a good idea, you know, to get everyone's name and place of residence.
And who's checking on you?
Uh... me?
It was a joke.
Uh, good one. --- John Locke, Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Hey, I know I already talked to you, but I just wanted to get away from him for a second. --- Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Hey, Lance.
Sorry?
Lance. You're name's Lance, right?
Ethan.
Dude, that's right. Lance is a little skinny guy with glasses and red hair.
I can see how you'd confuse us. - Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, Ethan Rom

Why is everyone so uptight about answering a few questions?
Well, maybe we're just not cool with you setting up your own little Patriot Act, man.
He's a liberal. --- Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, Boone Carlisle, Shannon Rutherford

I'm just gonna lay it out straight. I hear you have the flight manifest and I need it and I want you to give it to me.
Is that so?
Now, you could do what you normally do when someone asks for something; tell me to screw off....
"Screw off"?
...or you could just give it to me. Cause, dude, you could use the points.
Well gosh, you sure know how to butter a man up, Stay-Puft.
It's a gift. --- Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, "Sawyer"

I might not know what I'm doing, but I'll figure it out! If I can kick drugs, I can deliver a baby. --- Charlie Pace

Summary:

Closeup on Claire's eye as she wakes up. She sits up and looks around. She is in the caves. She hears a baby crying and, looking down, discovers that her stomach is flat; she is no longer pregnant.

She gets up and starts following the sound of the crying. She finds Locke, sitting at a desk. There are several small stones on the desk and a deck of cards. Locke is drawing cards from the deck one at a time and examining them.

Locke tells Claire that the baby was her responsibility and that since she game him away, everyone will have to pay the price. He looks up and we see that one of his eyes is a black stone, the other a white stone.

Claire runs into the jungle where she finds a crib; a mobile of Oceanic Airlines aircraft hanging over it. She looks under the blankets and finds a puddle of blood. She looks at her hands, now covered in blood, and screams.

Back in the caves again, Claire is screaming and Charlie is trying to calm her down. Several other survivors, including Michael, Jin and Sun, run up as he manages to help her get herself back under control. He tells her she was dreaming and sleepwalking. He then looks at her hands, sees that they are covered in blood, and asks what happened.

Later, Jack is tending the wounds on Claire's hands. He observes that she must have been having a very bad nightmare since she drove her fingernails a quarter-inch into her palms. He asks if she had ever had problems with sleepwalking before and she says no.

He then asks her a bit about her pregnancy and she says her OB/GYN in Sydney told her everything was fine and that it was safe for her to travel. Jack then asks how far along she is and when she first found out she was pregnant. Claire does not answer but stares into the distance.

Flashback: Claire is in an apartment with Thomas, her boyfriend. She has just taken a pregnancy test and it has come back positive. Both are extremely agitated and Claire is almost to the point of having a breakdown.

Thomas tries to calm her down and tells her that maybe they can make things work. Claire doesn't believe him at first but he convinces her and tells her he loves her. He holds her and she smiles.

Jack arrives at the beach and finds Kate standing on the edge of the surf and simply staring out to sea. They talk briefly and she admits that she is worried about Sayid. Jack thinks he will be all right.

She then asks what Jack is there for and he says he is simply bringing down water and getting fish. He then admits that he is worried because Claire will be having her baby soon.

Back near the caves, Claire is writing in her diary when Charlie brings her some tea. He tries to make small talk with her, joking about how drinking tea separates them from the "savage yanks" and about dreams he has had then he says that it must be hard for her, being so far away from her friends and family. He says that he could be her friend, if she needed someone to talk to. Claire seems a bit uncomfortable at Charlie's speech and says nothing. Embarrassed and unhappy, get gets up and leaves. Claire stares into the distance.

Flashback, Claire is with her friend Rachel and is telling her that Thomas has cleaned out his loft and that she is moving in with him. Both seem excited. They arrive at the house of Richard Manning, a psychic. Claire seems dubious but Rachel says she thought Claire would like it since she is into astrology. Claire says she doesn't want someone telling her what to do or how to live her life. Rachel says they are just there to have fun and they go inside.

Manning starts his reading by taking Claire's hands and almost immediately asks how long she has known about her baby. Both Claire and Rachel are startled. Manning seems to concentrate then abruptly breaks off the reading, giving Claire her money back and telling her he won't do the reading. Claire tries to find out why but he won't tell her and insists that both she and Rachel leave. Claire does, annoyed.

Claire is in the caves, asleep. Suddenly, someone puts a hand over her mouth. A knife is drawn and appears pointed at her stomach.

The cave awakes to Claire's screams. Charlie, Jack, Ethan, Hurley and Michael all rush to her aid. She says that someone attacked her. Charlie and Hurley rush out to see if they can find her attacker. Jack sends Ethan for some water. Michael asks if she saw who it was and she says no, but that whoever it was had a "needle" and was trying to hurt her baby.

Jack goes outside and finds Hurley who says he searched the area with Scott and Steve and couldn't find anyone. No one saw anything since everyone was asleep.

Hurley is concerned. He says that they don't even know who is who on the island, who is living in the caves or the beach or even what everyone's name is. He points out that his real name isn't Hurley; it's Hugo Reyes. He wants to create a registry of all of the survivors, thinking that doing so will help keep everyone in line.

"I mean, we start laying down the law, maybe people will stop attacking each other." he says. "It seems like someone's getting punched or stabbed or something every other day here."

Back in the caves, Charlie is wrapping a blanket around a still shaken Claire. He says that he will stay with her to keep her safe and that he won't leave her alone. She does not answer and stares into the distance.

Flashback: Claire, pregnancy now showing, is hanging drapes when Thomas arrives. She greets him and asks what he thinks, says that with the drapes she feels grown up for some reason and talks about their going out with friends that evening.

Thomas has remained mostly silent during all of this and she finally asks what is wrong. He says that he can't do this; he can't handle the plans and the responsibility and can't give up the freedom of his life.

Claire becomes angry and he yells at her, accusing her of deliberately getting pregnant. He tells her it is over and leaves. Claire cries.

The next morning, Hurley is on the beach, notebook in hand, and talking to Locke, who is tanning one of the boar hides. He is asking where Locke was from, what he was doing in Australia and so on. Locke says he was in Australia looking for something. Hurley asks if he found it.

Locke stares into the distance. "No, it found me."

Hurley thanks him then goes to talk to another survivor, saying that he knows he already talked to her but that he wants to get away from Locke.

Jack and Charlie are talking to Kate. She is telling them that people come and go from the beach all the time but she didn't notice anyone leaving last night.

Jack tells them that he thinks nothing may have happened and that Claire just had another nightmare, like the night before. Charlie angrily protests and does not believe him. Jack says that they need to keep Claire calm or she may go into labor early which would not be good, given the lack of medical facilities and supplies on the island. Charlie is still upset that Jack does not believe Claire and stalks off.

In the jungle, Hurley comes across Ethan, who is knocking fruit from a tree. He mistakenly calls him "Lance" at first but eventually gets his name and learns that he is from Ontario. Ethan wonders what Hurley is up to but he doesn't give any details and simply says that he thought it would be a good idea. They go their separate ways into the jungle.

Back at the caves, Jack talks to Claire. He talks about how much stress she and the others are and says she needs to stay calm. He offers her some medicine.

Claire realizes that he doesn't believe her and becomes angry. She throws her belongings back into her bag and leaves the caves for the beach. Charlie sees her leaving and angrily confronts Jack, demanding to know what he said to her.

Flashback: Claire arrives at Richard Manning's house, asks if he remembers her and asks for another reading. He agrees and immediately knows that Thomas has left her.

She asks if that is why he refused to do the reading before and he says no; he refused because what he saw was "blurry" and "blurry is bad".

He tells her that it is very important that she raise the baby herself. Thomas is not important but the baby must be raised by her and her only. Otherwise, there is great danger.

Claire becomes angry. Without Thomas she was planning on giving the baby up for adoption. Manning becomes more and more agitated at this, continuing to insist that she must raise the baby herself. He even gives her money back to her. Now angry, she ignores his protests and leaves.

Apparently some months later, Claire is awakened by a phone call at night. It is Manning who tells her that he has a plan. She cuts him off, telling him to leave her alone and saying that she is going to the adoption service the next day. He repeats that there will be great danger if she does not raise the baby herself and she hangs up on him.

Charlie catches up with Claire, who is on the path back to the beach. She says that Jack didn't believe her and tried to drug her. Charlie is angry that she entered the jungle on her own but she walks off.

On the beach, Hurley is getting information from Shannon and Boone. Shannon gives it to him but Boone wants to know why he is asking all the questions, saying he doesn't like Hurley setting up his own "Patriot Act". Hurley admits that Claire was attacked the night before, prompting Shannon to announce that she won't move to the "rape cave".

Boone, now more concerned, says that Hurley's job would be a lot easier if he had the passenger manifest. They crossed off the names of all the dead after they burned the fuselage, so it should be a complete list of everyone left. Hurley asks who has the manifest.

"Who else?" asks Boone.

Hurley walks into Sawyer's tent and says he wants the manifest. He then says that Sawyer could give him a hard time about it like he does everyone else, or he could just give it to him since "dude, you need the points."

Sawyer seems amused at Hurley's speech and tells him where to find the manifest.

In the jungle, Charlie is still following Claire, who won't even let him carry her bag. He says he wants to help but she tells him that he just feels that he needs to protect her because she is pregnant, not because he likes her. He denies this.

Suddenly, Claire starts having contractions. She tells Charlie to go get Jack. At first, Charlie doesn't leave, saying that if he can kick drugs he can help deliver a baby. This does nothing to calm Claire down and he runs off in search of Jack.

Flashback: Claire is at the adoption agency and meeting with an attorney and the adoptive parents. The attorney explains that once the baby is born she will not be allowed to have any contact with it. She seems reluctant, but agrees. They discuss the other terms of the adoption which include Claire receiving an apartment in Melbourne and $20,000.

Claire tries to sign the paperwork but the pen she is using does not work. The attorney gives her a different pen but it does not work either. The adoptive parents give her a third pen but Claire suddenly says that she can't go through with this. Despite the protests of everyone else in the room, she gets up and leaves.

Claire goes to Richard Manning's house and asks him what his plan is.

Charlie, running back to the caves, encounters Ethan. He fills Ethan in on what is happening and asks him to get Jack. Ethan runs for the caves while Charlie runs back to Claire. He finds her on the ground and promises to stay with her.

She is upset, saying that she wasn't supposed to be there. Charlie says they all feel that way but she says that someone promised her it would be different. Charlie says he was wrong and Claire agrees.

Flashback: Manning is telling Claire that she can give the baby to a couple in Los Angeles. She is confused, saying that for months he has been telling her not to give up the baby but now he is telling her to do so. He says he has seen things and knows that the couple in Los Angeles are good people. He gives her $6,000 and tells her she will get another $6,000 once she gets to Los Angeles.

Claire has apparently told Charlie all about Manning and is embarrassed about having gone to a psychic. She laughs, saying he was obviously "full of it".

Charlie disagrees. He points out that Manning had been insistent that no one but Claire raise the baby and says, thoughtfully, that maybe he knew.

Flashback: Manning gives Claire a ticket envelope for Oceanic Airlines and tells her she has to be on flight 815 the next day. Claire starts to protest, saying that she needs to get her things together, but Manning insists that she has to be on that particular flight. She takes the ticket and leaves. He watches her go; tears in his eyes.

Claire says, with realization, that there was no couple in Los Angeles.

"He knew." she tells Charlie with stunned surprise. "He knew about the plane; what was going to happen. Oh my God... He knew!"

Some time later, Claire's contractions have ended. Charlie points out that Jack told them that stress could cause false labor. She thanks him for his help. He asks if she can make it back to the caves and promises that he won't let anything happen to her. She agrees and they both smile.

Sayid, badly limping and injured, stumbles into the caves. Jack, Kate and Locke immediately try to help him; Kate giving him some water and Jack trying to examine his wounded leg. Sayid, however, desperately tries to tell them what he has found out. He tells them he met the French woman and that he had to come back.

"We aren't alone!" he gasps.

While he is talking, Hurley rushes in looking for Jack. He too tries desperately to tell Jack what he has found from his census and the flight manifest.

"I interviewed everyone." he gasps. "Here... at the beach... I got their names. One of them... one of them isn't in the manifest! He wasn't on the plane!"

In the jungle, Claire has stopped so Charlie can feel the baby kick. They both laugh, then Ethan steps out of the jungle in front of them. Charlie asks where Jack is, then notices that Ethan is staring at Claire's belly. He puts his arm protectively around Claire, who is looking at Ethan in fear.

Sharp cut to black. Episode ends.
