Overview:Another patient arrives at Kingdom Hospital to find himself under the care of Dr. Stegman. Dr. Hook seeks assistance, and perhaps a bit more, from Dr. Draper. And Paul decides to eliminate Antubis' interference in his plans once and for all. Summary:Somewhere near the hospital, a minister is conducting a book reading in what seems to be a homeless shelter with a group of its members. One of them is eager to discuss the last book that was read but his speech becomes more and more insane. We hear him mention both Paul and Mary. The minister tries to calm the man down but is knocked to the ground. The man then starts screaming of something inside of his head and pounds his head against the wall. He falls to the ground unconscious, his forehead a bloody mess. In the hospital, Carrie arrives at Peter and Rolf's room to find a guard from the prison outside the door, apparently reading a romance novel. She expresses surprise since Rolf has been there for some time without a guard but stops to talk and flirt a bit. Inside the room, Paul has appeared to Rolf again and places his hand around Peter's throat, starting to kill him with Rolf's indifferent approval. Mary appears and yells for him to stop but he ignores her. Mary calls for Antubis who appears and threatens Paul. Paul is angry and makes a few threats towards Antubis before leaving. Mary places her hand on Peter's and the monitors around him show his vital signs returning to normal. By the time Carrie enters the room there is no evidence that anything odd has happened. The man from the shelter is brought to the emergency room where he is attended to by Dr. Stegman and Dr. Gupta. Dr. Stegman repeatedly mispronounces Gupta's name and becomes arrogant and insulting when Gupta tries to correct him. An MRI shows a tumor in the man's brain and Stegman plans to remove it. Gupta warns that his blood pressure is low and that they may not have enough blood supplies to follow all the procedures they should. Stegman says that the man is homeless, which means that he can't pay the hospital and can't sue for malpractice, so that they should proceed without following all procedures. Dr. Gupta notes that the patient looks like Elmer but no one else seems to see the resemblance. The operation begins but the man starts moving and eventually sits up. Stegman yells at the anesthesiologist who says that the patient is already at maximum dosage and can't be given any more. The man sees Mary and Antubis and says he sees an angel. Mary rings her bell and the man dies. Stegman gets angry and yells that his brain surgery was a success and that the patient's death was the fault of the rest of the staff. He storms from the room. Dr. Gupta and the nurse discuss Stegman, the nurse saying that she should write up his behavior and Gupta saying he will sign it if she does. She then asks if his immigration paperwork is complete and he decides that maybe he can't do anything about Stegman after all. Dr. Hook stops in to visit Peter who is also being visited by his wife. He tells Natalie that he would like to let another patient visit Peter; a psychic. Natalie looks dubious. Rolf listens from the next bed. In the locker room, Dr. Gupta encounters Elmer. He asks Elmer to meet him in the morgue so he can show him something. Elmer looks dubious but agrees. Dr. Hook encounters Dr. Stegman in the hallway and gives him the Keepers' sign. Stegman gets irritated and asks why he keeps doing that. Hook says that he knows that Stegman is planning to join the Keepers and, to reassure him, notes that no one has been seriously hurt during the initiation for several years. Stegman looks at him apprehensively as he leaves. Able and Christa meet with Dr. James and say that they have never asked him for a favor before but want to ask one of him now. James agrees. Dr. Hook encounters Dr. Draper going through a trash can. He tells her that she looks good in her uniform and to be careful digging through the trash. She is angry and shows him several packages of medicine she has retrieved. She says that the medicine is expensive but has been thrown away since it is past its expiration date and complains of the waste and mismanagement in the hospital. She says that she has been trying to get a microscope for her own research but cannot get it approved. The sleep lab, on the other hand, just got a new microscope even though they already had one. Hook points out that the sleep lab already had two then asks her to follow him so he can show her something. Dr. Stegman is wandering through the hospital looking for people in white orderly uniforms but encounters dozens of them. He does encounter Able and Christa but they are now wearing pink uniforms so he does not consider them as possibly being responsible for the graffiti on his car. He leaves and they laugh. Elmer meets Dr. Gupta in the morgue and Gupta shows him the body of the man who died. He tries to explain to Elmer that the man looks like him but Elmer cannot see the resemblance until Gupta takes his glasses and puts them on the corpse. Dr. Hook drives Dr. Draper though the underground tunnel to his quarters. He tells her that Kingdom Hospital is built on the ruins of an older hospital that burned to the ground years before. The area they are in was part of the old hospital and is where he lives. She finds some medical supplies and he tells her he takes things that are being wasted in parts of the hospital and sees that they get to where they are needed. He offers her a drink (of champagne, which is somehow part of the medical supplies) and goes to get it while she explores the area. He catches up with her in the bedroom. She asks if he really sleeps there and he says that he does. He then comments that the bed is made for two and repeats his earlier observation that she looks good in her doctor's uniform. She then notices the "graveyard" on one side of the room. He says that he is keeping records on everything that happens in the hospital. The "plots" each represent a doctor. The crosses on the plots represent patients whom that doctor has killed; small crosses for simple mistakes, large crosses for gross malpractice. He also says that he has collected enough information to cost half the doctors in the hospital their license. Dr. Draper is angry and notes that he has a plot for her. He points out that it is a small cross because it was only a mistake. She admits that she was thinking about a tennis match at the time and failed to convert from kilograms to pounds when ordering an injection for the patient. She ordered an overdose and the patient died. Hook points out that there is a plot for him too. He was performing an operation while hung over and the patient died but no one cared since it was just a street person. He then asks if she regrets what happened and she says that she would give anything to be able to take it back and do it again. He says he feels the same way. She says that feeling is what makes his "hobby" so "grotesque". They hear something and Hook says that the "others" are arriving. He says they are planning something and asks for her help. She says that if it will annoy Stegman then she is in. They go to meet the new arrivals who are revealed to be Druse, Otto and Bobby. Otto is carrying a wrapped present which he gives to Dr. Draper. She discovers it is a new microscope. Hook offers everyone a drink and says they need to get started. Somewhere in the Old Kingdom, Blondie is sniffing along a corridor, followed by Antubis. Paul sits on some pipes overhead. Antubis stops and seems to sense something but then returns to following the dog. Paul kicks a pipe free and it falls to the ground, pinning Antubis beneath it. Paul taunts Antubis who roars in frustration but Paul says he will die there and leaves. Somewhere, Mary screams for Antubis. Observations: |
