Overview:

The death of one patient brings to light relationships between members of the staff while the death of another leads Druse to learn of Peter's connection with Mary. Meanwhile, Paul finds his own ally among the living in Peter's new roommate; the serial killer Rolf.

Summary:

It is night at Kingdom Hospital and we see various members of the staff asleep; Hook in his underground home, Otto at his desk, Able and Christa on the floor of the kitchen and Stegman in his car in the parking lot.

Somewhere, in a private home, a nurse is sleeping in a chair. She is awakened by a monitor and goes into another room to check on an elderly man lying in bed. It appears that he has died in his sleep as, after checking his respiration and pulse, the nurse pulls the sheet over his head. The nurse then opens a drawer and removes some money from the man's wallet. She is leaving the room when the man in the bed, who is apparently not dead after all, suddenly sits up and demands to know what she is doing there. She is shocked and suffers a heart attack.

The nurse is taken to Kingdom Hospital and Otto pages Dr. Hook in his quarters. Hook gets out of bed and gets dressed. As he does, he looks at an odd display. A number of small "cemetery plots" sit on a shelf, each labeled with a doctor's name and containing small crosses showing the names of patients. We see one with the names of Mona Klingerman and Dr. Stegman.

Dr. Hook goes to the emergency room where he assists Dr. Traff in attempting to revive the nurse. They do get her heart restarted briefly but it stops again. Traff tries again and again to revive her, yelling at the others for help, but finally Hook convinces him that there is nothing more they can do. Traff is despondent and leaves.

Dr. Hook asks why Traff is so upset and the ER nurse tells him that the dead woman is Traff's ex-wife. She used to work at the hospital but had been badly burned in a fire and was later caught stealing medicine for the pain. She had been fired and had only been able to work as a private nurse since.

Elmer Traff is in the locker room and is about to open his locker when he sees blood pouring from it. He steps backwards in alarm then turns to run, only to be attacked by Antubis.

He wakes up with a start and we see that he is in the sleep lab; electrodes attached to his head. Dr. Massingale says that she woke him up and asks if he was having a nightmare. He admits that he did and says it was the most disturbing dream he has ever had. He does not want to talk about it but she insists that he tell her and produces a small tape recorder to record his description.

Outside, Dr. Stegman is still standing beside his car. He repeats over and over to himself that he is a good person and that he is happy with himself and that he really did try to help Mona Klingerman.

He sees two of the street teens who harassed him earlier across the street and goes up to them, demanding to know who defaced his car. At first they will not talk to him but he shows them a gun he is carrying in his pocket and one of them finally admits that the graffiti was done by a man and a woman wearing white orderly uniforms. Stegman thanks them and gives them some money, asking them to tell him if they see the two again.

Elmer has finished discussing his nightmare and attempts to flirt with Dr. Massingale but she brushes him off and says that she woke him because his father wants to see him.

Druse goes to Lenny's room. He is unconscious but she sits beside his bed anyway.

Elmer meets with his father who tells him about his mother's death. Elmer at first seems unmoved by this, sarcastically saying that he knows his father did everything he could since his father would never violate his Hippocratic oath. He then starts to cry, asking if doing so makes him weak and wonders which parent that weakness came from.

He asks if there will be an autopsy and his father says that he is high enough in the Keepers of the Kingdom to block one if he wants. Elmer says that he does not want there to be an autopsy. His father agrees.

Lenny wakes up and asks if he is dying. Druse admits that he is but says that she will be there with him. They talk for a bit and it is revealed that they were once lovers.

Druse suddenly gets an idea and tells Lenny that when he dies he will pass though "Swedenborgian Space". She asks if he will stop there before going "to the light" and try to get in contact with the girl. He agrees and dies shortly thereafter.

Druse is sad but a few moments later the lights flash. She asks if it is Lenny and the lights flash again. Using one flash for yes and two flashes for no she is able to learn that he has contacted the girl and that someone in the hospital knows who she is. She asks what room the person who knows is in.

Paul appears to Rolf Pedersen in the form of Harriet, his former girlfriend, but Rolf realizes that it isn't her. Paul then takes his own form and tells Rolf to kill Druse if she tries to talk to Peter.

Druse does arrive and Rolf starts to get up from the bed but is interrupted by the arrival of Hook. Hook chases Druse out of the room, saying that they would both be in trouble if Stegman found her there. She insists that Peter knows who the little girl is but Hook seems unconvinced that she can really communicate with the dead and forces her to leave.

Another earthquake shakes the hospital.

In the sleep lab, Dr. Massingale is reviewing information on a bank of computer monitors when a window for "Project Sandman" appears on one of them. She is surprised and pleased to note that Elmer is "Sandman Positive". The window shows three names; Elmer Traff, Able Lyon and Christa Mendelson.

The episode ends with Mary, standing on the top of the elevator, frightened and crying for help.
