We have to trust in that. Fly safe. You have got to be kidding me... - John Crichton Well now, John. Tell me. What did you expect? - Scorpius Summary:(Note: Much of this episode consists of dreams or visions being seen by John. In several cases John will be having a conversation in his dream while he is having the exact same conversation (with a completely different context) in the real world. This summary will try to be clear what is happening but some confusion is probably unavoidable. Watching it was almost as bad; this episode is a major mind-frell. DM) John is in what appears to be a bridal boutique. Aeryn, wearing a wedding dress, appears and walks down an aisle in front of him. She says the dress doesn't work and John says it does, just not for a wedding. She runs off laughing, John following. John is again in the boutique. Aeryn again appears, wearing a different dress. John goes up to her and tells her if she dresses like that then someone is going to marry her. They move as if to kiss. A flash to white transitions us to Moya's galley. Chiana is telling John that his world can't be that bad and he just needs to ask her. She is presumably talking about Aeryn. John tells her it isn't that simple. There is a clatter of cookware and we see an old woman working with some pots and pans. She is more-or-less human but with very large ears and what seems to be a third eye in her forehead, currently closed. She also looks as if she hasn't had a bath in months. She asks if John and Chiana would like some chowder. When neither of them says anything she suggests that maybe Aeryn wouldn't like John's planet after all. Flash transition back to the bridal boutique. John and Aeryn, now in Earth-normal street clothes, approach the counter. John gives Aeryn a credit card and encourages her towards the clerk behind the counter. Aeryn seems reluctant but finally asks the clerk to "charge it". Unfortunately her pronunciation is completely off and the clerk cannot understand her. John finally steps in and takes care of things. As they leave, Aeryn is obviously upset and frustrated and complains that no one can understand her. John tries to be encouraging but she doesn't listen and stalks off. Transition again to Moya. Chiana asks the old woman why she didn't leave with the others. The old woman says it was because she knew they would like her food. John asks Chiana who the old woman is and Chiana says she thought she was with John. John notices something and goes to look out a window. He sees another Leviathan and Pilot tells him that they have arrived at the Sacred Leviathan Burial space. In the maintenance bay, Aeryn is helping D'Argo load some supplies onto his ship. She asks why he has so many and he replies that Macton's assignment is a long ways off and he does not want to delay his revenge any longer than he has to. D'Argo then comments that he still cannot believe that Crais sacrificed himself. They both look out into the hanger bay where a collection of debris lies; all that is left of Talyn. Aeryn expresses sadness, saying that Talyn was a good ship. Back in the galley, Chiana suddenly experiences another of her visions and slams back into the counter. John asks what is happening and she only says that she saw Moya being pulled down into darkness. John calls for Pilot who yells that the other Leviathan is about to ram them. There is a collision and everyone is thrown about. Somewhat later, everyone is in Pilot's Den and giving damage reports. Pilot comments that the other Leviathan knew exactly where to hit Moya for maximum effect and Aeryn says that a torpedo hit couldn't have done more damage. Pilot reports that he has not been able to contact the Pilot of the other Leviathan but that the reason for the attack seems to have something to do with Talyn. The old woman is shining a flashlight directly into Rygel's face and he asks who she is. John and Aeryn are staring uncomfortably at each other. Flash transition to a wedding. Aeryn throws the bouquet which is caught in a diving catch by Jool. Flash to Moya. Aeryn has apparently just finished telling everyone what needs to be done to get Moya operational again. She asks if everyone understands and gets no response from John. She asks him again. Flash to the wedding. John is taking the garter from Aeryn's leg. Rygel is more interested in the wedding cake. Flash to Moya. John says the plan is good. Aeryn gives him a strange look and leaves. John follows and the old woman watches him carefully as he does. Flash to the wedding. John and Aeryn are thanking various people for coming. D'Argo, wearing a tux and with a woman on each arm, arrives and tells John that he is the second luckiest man on Earth that night. They all laugh. Flash to Moya. D'Argo and Rygel are on Command making repairs. Pilot tells them that the other Leviathan lost three of its offspring to the Peacekeepers and does not want Talyn buried there because he is half Peacekeeper. Pilot says he is still unable to contact the other Pilot. In the hanger bay, Jool is helping Aeryn with some repairs on her Prowler. Jool asks Aeryn if she is still planning on looking for the ex-Peacekeeper unit and if it was true that they assassinate people. Aeryn disagrees, saying that they attempt to stop terrorism and protect people. Jool asks Aeryn if she wants some advice and Aeryn angrily replies that she isn't John's mate and isn't tied to him in any way. Jool, instead, says that Aeryn has come so far in the time she has known her and that joining a group of assassins seems like going backwards. Aeryn asks Jool to melt a connection for her and Jool says she can't without power. Aeryn grabs Jool's hand and twists it. Jool screams and the connection melts. John is working on something behind a panel when Chiana arrives. She comments that Moya will be all right then starts to apologize to John, saying it wasn't true when she said she didn't want him to come with her. Flash transition to an Earth bedroom. Chiana, in Earth-style clothing, is lying on a bed covered with clothes. John enters and sees her then immediately leaves, saying that something is wrong. Flash to Moya. Chiana is telling John that since she is planning to go look for the Nebari resistance it would not help for her to be with someone who looks like a Peacekeeper. John tells her it is OK. Chiana then asks what they are going to do if the other Leviathan won't let them bury Talyn. The old woman offers her services as a negotiator and Chiana leaves, telling her to stick to the chowder. As soon as she is gone, the woman runs up and blows some powder into John's face. Flash to a wedding. Everything is in somewhat slow motion and the sound is distorted. Throughout this sequence the scene cuts rapidly between John's vision and him in Moya's galley. John is dancing with Aeryn, first with others then alone by candlelight. Later he is offering her a piece of wedding cake. We suddenly see several people in catering uniforms, apparently serving food at the wedding, getting shot. John pulls his pulse pistol and starts shooting wildly, both in his vision and in reality. We transition completely to Moya. D'Argo has come running at the sound of gunfire and sees John. John apparently doesn't "see" D'Argo and tries to shoot him but D'Argo tongues him first. John falls unconscious. D'Argo asks the old woman what happened and she says she misjudged John's weight. D'Argo tongues her too. Elsewhere, Pilot suddenly announces that he has learned that the other Leviathan killed its own Pilot. The other Leviathan says that it will not allow Talyn to be buried in the Sacred Space. Rygel says that they should just leave and Aeryn agrees but Pilot says that Moya feels that Talyn has earned the right to be buried there and refuses to back down. Flash transition to an Earth restaurant. Aeryn is at a table with Jack Crichton. John is nearby but standing behind a support column; the other two appear unaware of his presence. Aeryn asks Jack how he can stand being stuck on one planet then says that John has this dream of them being married and settling down with a home and children and doesn't see how miserable she is. She wonders when he will wake up. (About halfway through this scene there is a brief cut to Moya where we see John lying on the floor. Aeryn reaches to take his gun and he grabs her arm.) Flash back to Moya and John says he is awake. He shifts his grip on Aeryn's arm and she helps him to his feet. She explains the situation with the other Leviathan to him and he agrees that they should just leave. Aeryn says that Moya still refuses to give up and that Rygel and Chiana are talking to her. John seems a bit startled at this. The old woman again offers to be a negotiator and John asks Aeryn who the old woman is. Somewhere on Moya, Chiana is alone in a chamber and talking. (Note: This scene includes many cuts from many camera angles and many of the lines of dialog are repeated from cut to cut.) She tells Moya that Zhaan told her that she always got along so well with Moya because she was always honest with her, no matter what. She then says that all of the others were very concerned about her plan to bury Talyn in the Sacred Burial Space but that she thought Moya should bury him wherever she wanted to and that the other Leviathan should get out of their way. Flash transition to the Earth bedroom. Chiana is lying on the bed among the clothes as before. John asks her what she is doing and she says she has been shopping. When John points out she doesn't have any money she changes to say she has been shoplifting. She then says she has spent some time with "the boys" and, in a sing-song voice, says she knows who the best man is. John, seemingly angry, asks why she has to sleep with all of his friends and why she can't just try to fit in. She pouts that Earth is such a repressed culture. At this point Jack Crichton arrives. John greets his father but Chiana runs up to him and they kiss. John is startled but Jack, still holding Chiana, points out that John's mother has been gone for a long time. John, angrily, says "That is not right!" Transition back to Moya. D'Argo disagrees with John and Chiana asks why it always has to be his plan. John says that it doesn't but that he isn't sure that D'Argo knows how to fly his ship well enough and that Moya may not let them kill one of her own species. He repeats his statement "It's just not right!" Pilot breaks in and says things are worse than they thought. He has learned that three other Leviathans have been killed by the Leviathan attacking them and that others are injured. Moya lurches from another attack. Pilot says that Moya has a request of them and Aeryn tells him that Moya has their support no matter what. Pilot responds that Moya knows that and that is why she feels that she can ask them this. "Kill the rogue Leviathan!" John is still uncertain but D'Argo goes to get his ship ready. Jool asks D'Argo if he is comfortable with taking another being's life and he snorts at her in annoyance before leaving. John tells Jool to stay with Chiana. Jool objects but John tells her that Chiana midwifed Talyn's birth and shouldn't have to bury him alone. D'Argo gives Aeryn instructions on how he wants her to maneuver the Leviathan into position. She eventually gets tired of his semi-contradictory directions and offers to shoot the Leviathan herself. Aeryn takes off in her Prowler while John and D'Argo take off in D'Argo's ship. Moya enters the Burial Space, the rogue Leviathan in pursuit. Talyn's remains are released. Chiana and Jool are standing together, watching the remains. Chiana tries to say something but is overcome by emotion and cannot. Rygel finally steps in. "Talyn was special. A joy to his mother and a credit to his species; both of them. With fondness we lay Talyn, offspring of Moya, to rest in this sacred ground." Chiana sinks to her knees. Jool holds her as she sobs in grief. Pilot suddenly calls to the others saying that the rogue Leviathan is trying to scatter Talyn's remains. Aeryn strafes it with her Prowler and it turns, chasing her as she leads it towards D'Argo's ship. (Note: The next scenes cut rapidly between Earth and the cockpit of D'Argo's ship. There is a single conversation that continues through the cuts in both locations.) Transition to Earth. John and D'Argo arrive at a pier where several young boys are fishing. They greet D'Argo but he and John are arguing. John is in a bad mood. John calls D'Argo a freak and D'Argo says he isn't. The boys agree. At this point the scene starts switching rapidly back and forth between Earth and the cockpit. D'Argo says he is sorry that Aeryn is leaving him and John comments that everyone is leaving. D'Argo responds that John never hesitated to try to find a wormhole back to Earth so he shouldn't begrudge the rest of them trying to get home. D'Argo tells John to just go back to Earth. John says he can't because the Peacekeepers would follow him there. He can't decide what he should do. D'Argo tells him the choice should be easy but John says it isn't. John then says he should never have brought the others to Earth because they don't fit in. D'Argo disagrees and fires his Qualta Blade into the water. Fish float to the surface and the boys scoop them up in nets. In reality D'Argo tells John to hold the ship steady then fires at the rogue Leviathan. A bolt of energy flies from the ship and envelopes the Leviathan. There is a flare and the Leviathan disappears without a trace. Later, back on Moya, John enters the galley and asks the old woman who she is. She says that she was a Peacekeeper prisoner who was on one of the escape pods. They took her escape pod on board but when everyone else from the pod left she stayed behind to pay her debt to them for rescuing her. John asks what she did to him. She says she tried to help him strip away the lies. John says how he used to dream of space and now he dreams of Earth but lately none of his dreams work. He asks her to show him the truth again. "I ran from it." he says. "And I am so tired of running." He pauses. "Show me again." (Note: In this next sequence we cut between Earth and John and the Old Woman in the galley. There are occasional shots of the Old Woman whispering in John's ear.) The Old Woman blows some powder into face. He flinches back then flash transitions to Earth. John places a wedding ring on Aeryn's finger. Then John and Aeryn are dancing. Pull back to reveal a wedding reception. Jack asks to cut in and begins dancing with Aeryn. John dances with Chiana. D'Argo is dancing with someone as well. There are cuts showing John and the Old Woman dancing in the galley. Later, everyone is seated at tables. Jack Crichton stands up and starts to make a speech about how happy he is for John and Aeryn and about everything they went through to get home. Just as he starts a toast, he is suddenly shot. In reality John grabs his gun but the Old Woman stops him and tells him to see the truth. The third eye in her forehead is open and a light from it is shining on John. At the reception, Peacekeeper troops are seen charging into the room. Pilot and Rygel are shot. D'Argo leaps over a table and attacks one of the Peacekeepers but is shot himself. Chiana gets shot a few moments later. Jool tries to run but is shot as well. John and Aeryn crawl under a table then try to run for it. Aeryn is shot twice, blood running down her dress. John catches her and lowers her to the ground. "You're going to be all right." he tells her, holding her. "You're going to be all right." Aeryn dies. John throws back his head and howls in pain and grief. The camera pulls back to reveal the carnage. Everyone is dead and Peacekeeper troops surround John as he continues to kneel on the floor holding Aeryn's body. The Peacekeepers step aside as Scorpius approaches and kneels beside John. "Well now, John." he says. "Tell me. What did you expect?" Transition back to Moya. John, still staring in horror, tells the Old Woman it was a nightmare. He says he has two dreams and they are not compatible. He tried to merge the two and couldn't. Now, he can't go back to Earth and all of his friends are leaving. She asks if he blames himself and he tells her the story of the dog with two bones. There was a dog who had a bone which was the most important thing in the world to it. One day the dog came to a river and, looking in, saw a reflection of a dog with another bone. It opened its mouth to try to get the second bone too and the bone dropped from its mouth. The bone fell into the river and was lost, leaving the dog with nothing. The Old Woman asks if the dog is smart enough to learn and John says it is too late. The Old Woman becomes angry and tells him it is never too late. She then asks, if the dog could only have one bone, which one would it be? Aeryn is in the hanger bay, loading supplies onto her Prowler. John arrives carrying a bag and says he is coming with her. She says he isn't and asks what he wants. "You." he says. John grabs her and demands that she call him John and tell him goodbye to his face. She shoves him and tells him to promise her that he won't die in her arms again. He shoves back and demands the same promise from her. She says she can, by leaving. She starts towards her Prowler again. "Do you love John Crichton?" he asks. She stops. "Not him. Not me. John Crichton." John walks to her and tries to kiss her. She resists at first but he eventually succeeds. "What did that taste like?" he asks. Aeryn yells after him that she can't go through it again. John turns and yells back that he can't let the only thing he loves fly off alone. Aeryn says that he once told her that the fates meant for them to be together and he agrees. She then says that if that is true then they will be together again someday. John disagrees, saying that running away isn't fate. He pulls a coin from his pocket and says it is fate. She asks if he means that they toss the coin and if it comes up one way she stays and the other she goes. He says yes and throws the coin into the air. Aeryn grabs it from the air without looking. "Just make a frelling wormhole and go home." she tells him, starting to turn away again. John turns without a word and walks towards the door. Aeryn watches him go for a moment then begins kicking at the crates around her in frustration. John turns to look at her and she stops. They stare at each other for a moment then Aeryn drops the coin and kicks it towards him. He walks forward and picks it up as she walks to meet him. They look at each other wordlessly for a moment, then John flips the coin into the air. The camera tracks the coin and, as it reaches the top of its arc, the scene freezes and fades out. Some time later, John sits in the Farscape 1, staring expressionlessly out at space. Once again we are at the wedding. D'Argo is there and dancing with several women. "Anything positive I do with the rest of my life will be because of you." he says. "Take care my friend." The scene cuts briefly to John in his module then back to the wedding. Now we see Chiana dancing. "You'd better not forget me." she says. "You'd better not ever forget that I love you." Another cut to John in the module, then once again back to the wedding. Rygel is raising a glass in a toast. "Of all the lesser species, I admit I've grown to like yours the best." he says. A final cut to John. Now we see Aeryn's Prowler outside the cockpit with Aeryn visible inside. "We're in the hands of fate now." we hear her say. "We have to trust in that." We see Aeryn briefly, tears on her face. "Fly safe. Goodbye, John Crichton." The Prowler fades away, leaving John alone. He stares into space but is suddenly interrupted by a call from Jool, asking if he is out of fuel. He seems to pull himself awake and says he is low and is coming back to Moya. Harvey suddenly appears as if he is sitting behind John. He tells John how fascinating human memory is and how he will never believe what he found there. John tells him to leave him alone but Harvey says he will give him a gift. Flashback to the earlier scene when we saw the Old Woman whispering in John's ear. This time, we can hear her words. "Be forgiving. Be kind. Better angels. Her life. Her world. On her time. You will know." "Aeryn is with child." John is stunned. "Aeryn. Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you trust me?" He yells for the Old Woman and for Pilot to connect him to Aeryn. Pilot says that Aeryn is already out of communication range and John begs him to go after her. Jool starts to object but the Old Woman grabs Jool's hair then bites her ear. She tells Pilot to do as John asks. Pilot is confused and somewhat flustered but agrees to go after Aeryn as soon as John is back on board. John starts to maneuver towards Moya but, as he does, a wormhole suddenly appears. Moya is pulled into the wormhole which then disappears just as suddenly as it arrived. John stares in shock at the now empty space around him. "You havegotto be kidding me!" he says. The camera pulls back, showing the Farscape 1 all alone among the stars. References:The other John died at the end of Icarus Abides (Infinite Possibilities: Part 2. Interestingly, his last words were "I've never felt better...", the same as Aeryn's in John's dream. Aeryn died in Die Me, Dichotomy, the second season finale. (She got better.) D'Argo has left to get his revenge on Macton, the murderer of his wife. We learned of Macton in They've Got a Secret. Chiana has left to search for the Nebari resistance and her brother. She learned that her brother was helping lead the resistance in I Do, I Think (Look at the Princess: Part 2). References:Why didn't Aeryn tell John she was pregnant? Does she even know? Assuming Aeryn is pregnant, who is the father? How does the Old Woman know about Aeryn's pregnancy? Who is she anyway? Why does she seem to be so interested in John? Where did the wormhole come from? What happened to Moya? Commentary:Dog With Two Bones, the third season finale, is easily one of the best episodes of the season. It is oddly structured and sometimes confusing but for fans it represents a major milestone in the series; a major turning point for all of our characters. After this, nothing will ever be the same again. For most of our characters it is here that they finally set off for the goals they have held for so long. Finally, after most of three seasons, D'Argo is setting off to get his revenge against Macton, Chiana is leaving to search for her brother and Rygel is setting out to reclaim his throne. The family that formed on Moya all those cycles ago is breaking up. There is a certain sadness as each of them says their goodbyes but each also seems happy that their goals are now within their reach. Well, some of them are happy anyway. Aeryn is not. Aeryn's goal has always been different from everyone else's. She never had an obvious goal that was driving her. D'Argo had his son then Macton, Chiana had her brother, Rygel had his throne. What did Aeryn have? The answer was given long ago, back in DNA Mad Scientist. That was the first time it seemed as if everyone was about to leave. Then, somewhat drunk, she confides to John that she has never been alone; she has always been a part of something, a crew, a regiment, a squadron. For the past few cycles she has been part of the family on Moya. Now, that family seems to be ending. She couldn't go back to the Peacekeepers before and certainly can't now. She saw a place for herself with the John on Talyn, but that was taken away from her too. What now for Aeryn? Look at what has happened to Aeryn. She falls in love with the John on Talyn, and he dies. She finally makes a connection with her mother, and she dies. She has a special relationship with Talyn, and he dies. There is something (exactly what is uncertain, but there is something) between her and Crais, and he dies. She meets Henta, her old friend from the Peackeepers and, yes, she dies too. And we have to remember that Zhaan gave her life to save Aeryn's and should probably mention Velorek as well. They weren't kidding when they called Season 3 the "Season of Death". Every single individual that Aeryn has ever allowed herself to become close to has died, most within the past cycle. It is no wonder she is leaving to join up with a group of ex-Peacekeepers. It's the closest thing to a family she has left. She is running from the pain that she must be feeling to the only place she can think of where she won't have to feel anymore. Becoming an emotionless assassin probably sounds like a good idea to her at the moment. So, why is she rejecting John? Because, to her, John is dead. As she said, he died in her arms.ThisJohn is someone wholookslike her John andactslike her John butisn'ther John. She does not want to be around someone who will be a constant reminder of what she has lost. But why the distinction? It's hard to tell. Since none of us have ever experienced losing a loved one who is still around it's hard to say for certain. Still, one would think that someone who had lost someone they loved would be overjoyed to somehow get them back. Is there something else? Actually yes, there is. Who is the father of her child? The answer to that question may not be as obvious as we think. Sure, the child is probably John's; she and the John on Talyn certainly got in their share of "recreating". But that isn't the only possibility. She and Crais seemed to share a "moment" on the Command Carrier just before he killed himself. While it is most likely that nothing more than what we saw occurred we cannot rule it out either. For that matter, Aeryn offered herself to Crais in return for his help in Plan B (Liars, Guns and Money: Part 3) and we never saw his response to her. (It seems as if he turned her down but who knows?) Yes, that was over a cycle ago but what do we know about Sebacean gestation periods? Actually, if we take that into account, we may also have to remember the night she and John spent together in A Human Reaction and possibly even her time with Velorek as well. No matter who the answer to the question is, it gives another reason why she may not want to stay with John. If the fatheristhe John on Talyn then she has a very tangible reminder that this John is not the one she was in love with. If the father is someone else, well, that would be a good reason for staying away from John too. Speaking of John, he too is not happy. Everyone is leaving to go after their dreams, except him. He has realized that he has two dreams but he can only have one. John has been obsessed with finding a wormhole that will take him back to Earth. In Til the Blood Runs Clear he nearly hijacks Aeryn through one. In Could'a, Would'a, Should'a and Wait For the Wheel), nearly turned the crew against him in Incubator and finally angered D'Argo past the breaking point in Revenging Angel. Now, he has almost solved wormholes. Soon he will be able to get home. But, where is home? In Won't Get Fooled Again John commented that Moya almost seemed like home to him. He too has come to think of the others on Moya as family. He has obviously been assuming that the family would stay together and that he would be with Aeryn. And, he has apparently been assuming that all of them would go to Earth together. It should have been obvious that last one may have been an incorrect assumption but it really hasn't mattered since John has never even had the option of getting back to Earth. Now that may be within his grasp but he may also have to choose between returning home and staying with Aeryn and his friends. Or, maybe he doesn't have the choice. All of them are leaving him. At the end, John finally makes his decision. He will stay with Aeryn. But he is too late. Aeryn leaves him too and he is, literally, left all alone. Not all of this is John's fault of course. Aeryn has her own reasons for not being able to be with him. But he does have to accept much of the blame himself. His obsession with finding a wormhole to return home put enough of a rift between him and his friends that they leave without him. Not all of them left on their own either. The appearance of the wormhole that takes Moya and the others away is certainly unexpected. Was the wormhole natural or was it created by someone? If the latter, who? Will Moya be able to make it back from where the wormhole takes it? We'll have to wait until next season to find out. There is one other thing about this episode that needs to be examined and that is the Old Woman. (Close captioning refers to her as "Noranti", btw.) Who is this Old Woman and where did she come from? Sheclaimsto have been rescued from the Command Carrier but if this is true it seems odd that no one on Moya seems to remember the event. Everyone asks who she is at some point or another anyway. For that matter, why does the crew seem so unconcerned that this women that none of them seem to recognize is wandering around the ship? Given their usual paranoia this seems a bit out of place. There is something unusual going on but we will have to wait until next season to get answers to that one as well. And thus ends another season ofFarscape, on yet another cliffhanger. John is all alone in the out-of-fuel Farscape 1 in the Leviathan Burial Space. Moya has been taken and everyone else has left and aren't planning to come back. He will escape, somehow. (Probably... This isFarscapeafter all.) Just how, we will have to wait to find out. See you next season. Farscape and all related characters and elements are © & ™ by The Jim Henson Co. Ltd. All rights reserved.
