My name is John Crichton, an astronaut. Three years ago I got shot through a wormhole. I'm in a distant part of the universe aboard this living ship of escaped prisoners; my friends. I've made enemies. Powerful... Dangerous... Now, all I want is to find a way home; to warn Earth. Look upward... and share the wonders I've seen.
Background:
Astronaut John Crichton, while testing an experimental spacecraft, is pulled through a wormhole and into an area of space known as the Uncharted Territories. There, he is taken aboard Moya, an intelligent living starship known as a Leviathan. Moya is crewed by a group of escaped prisoners; Ka D'Argo, Zotoh Zhaan and Dominar Rygel XVI as well as her pilot, Pilot. Also on board is the Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun who was captured in the escape.
All of them are pursued by Bialar Crais, the Peacekeeper from whom the prisoners escaped and who blames John for the death of his brother; a result of a collision with John's spacecraft.
John and the others are briefly captured by Crais at which time Aeryn is declared Irreversibly Contaminated. John gets away and he, Aeryn and the others escape from Crais.
All of them flee into the Uncharted Territories while still being pursued by Crais. They become involved in a series of adventures while learning to work together. They are soon joined by another escaping prisoner, Chiana. Eventually, all of them come to trust and respect each other and become allies and friends. Aeryn and John become especially close and develop a mutual interest in each other.
Crais' quest for revenge unbalances him and he continues to pursue John against the orders of the Peacekeeper High Command. He kills his Lieutenant when she learns that he has been ordered to return so that he can continue the search.
During this time, while attempting to remove Peacekeeper tracking and control devices from Moya, a shield is broken and Moya becomes pregnant. Eventually, Moya's offspring is born. The baby is a heavily armed gunship, which surprises everyone as no Leviathan has ever had weaponry. The baby is named Talyn after Aeryn's father.
At one point John encounters another wormhole but while investigating it his module is damaged and he is forced to land on a nearby planet. He is able to get the module repaired by Furlow, a mechanic, but he is forced to give her his wormhole information in payment.
In one significant adventure John encounters what seems to be a wormhole back to Earth. He enters it but things are not what they seem and the place he and several other crew members visit is nothing but a test created by a race known as the Ancients. The Ancients are looking for a new home, a planet where they can coexist with the natives. Unfortunately, their test reveals that Earth will not be that planet.
Later, Moya is boarded by a group of Peacekeepers transporting a dangerous virus. The virus escapes and wreaks havoc. Eventually all of the Peacekeepers are killed and the virus destroyed but Aeryn is badly injured. To save her life, John is forced to impersonate a Peacekeeper and infiltrate a Gammak Base. With the aid of Gilina, a technician that he had previously befriended, he is able to get a tissue sample to save Aeryn but he is recognized as an impostor by Scorpius and captured.
Scorpius places John in the Aurora Chair in order to probe his memories. He discovers John's interest in wormholes and it is revealed that the purpose of the base is wormhole research. While probing, he discovers that when John encountered the Ancients they hid information on creating a wormhole in his mind. Even John did not know this information was in his mind.
With the aid of his friends from Moya, Gilina and a fellow prisoner named Stark, John manages to escape from the base. Unfortunately, Gilina, who has fallen in love with John, is killed in the escape.
Scorpius pursues them and Moya, her crew and Talyn are forced to hide. They gain an unlikely ally in the form of Crais. Scorpius has discovered that Crais disobeyed orders and killed his lieutenant and he now faces a court-martial and execution. He escapes to join the crew of Moya and is declared Irreversibly Contaminated.
The crew comes up with a plan to destroy the Gammak Base and escape from Scorpius. The plan initially works and the base is destroyed but Crais uses the opportunity to steal Talyn and leave. Moya is forced to flee shortly thereafter and Aeryn is left behind in her Prowler while looking for John and D'Argo, who are floating in space and running out of oxygen.
She manages to rescue them but only by making a deal with Crais to help him gain control of Talyn. In exchange, he tells her of an oxygen atmosphere asteroid on which they can hide. Scorpius is still in the area, now in control of Crais' Command Carrier, and is searching for them.
When John and D'Argo learn of Aeryn's deal with Crais, John goes to Talyn and captures him, taking him to Moya, who has by now returned to the system. Talyn panics and leaves the protection of the asteroid belt and Moya follows, revealing both Leviathans to Scorpius. Talyn demands that he be sent a captain and insists that it be Crais, even firing upon Moya to make his point. Crais and Aeryn both go to Talyn but Talyn implants Crais with a Neural Transponder and the two force Aeryn to return to Moya. Talyn Starbursts to safety, as does Moya.
The crew encounters Scorpius again on a breakaway Sebacean colony located deep in the Uncharted Territories where they become involved in political intrigue. The princess Katralla is about to ascend to the throne but she cannot do so unless she can produce an heir. Katralla has had her DNA corrupted by the Scarrans, who are hoping that her brother Clavor will ascend to the throne instead and will become their puppet ruler. To their surprise, John's DNA is found to be compatible with the princess' and he is forced to marry her to avoid a political incident. With the aid of the Peacekeeper disrupter Jenavian the Scarran plot is foiled and John is able to arrange for Katralla to marry her true love. However, he learns that she is carrying his daughter but that she will not be born for over 70 cycles, as the princess will be in a form of suspended animation for that time. He is happy to know he will have a daughter but saddened by the knowledge that he will never know her.
During this adventure John has the opportunity to kill Scorpius but does not do so, much to the surprise of the rest of the crew. Also during this time Chiana and D'Argo become lovers.
The reason John was unable to kill Scorpius is revealed later, when John is captured by the Scarrans to determine why he is so important to Scorpius. When he was in the Aurora Chair, Scorpius implanted a neural chip within John's brain. The chip has created a neural clone of Scorpius within John's mind which is attempting to locate the wormhole information hidden there.
The crew once again encounters Chiana's people, the Nebari. All of them are temporarily mind-cleansed by the Nebari but John is able to break the conditioning with the aid of the neural clone. The crew gains the upper hand and escapes. Chiana learns that her brother, Nerri, is still alive and leading a resistance against the Nebari.
The Nebari plan is also revealed. The Nebari infected Nerri, Chiana and many others like them with a virus which is spread through sexual contact. The virus will lie dormant for some time but when it activates the hundreds of worlds to which it has spread will be thrown into turmoil and the Nebari will be able to step in and take over.
Somewhat later, Stark returns with information about Jothee, D'Argo's missing son. Jothee is part of a lot of slaves which is soon to be sold. The crew determines to buy the lot of slaves in order to rescue Jothee and in order to come up with the money they develop a plan to rob a Shadow Depository, a kind of bank for criminals. To aid them, they hire mercenaries they have encountered before.
The plan goes awry when Scorpius appears at the depository. The crew steals a money container which was intended for Scorpius but the "money" turns out to be an insect-like life form which begins to attack Moya from the inside. To eliminate the insects, flammable gas is fed through Moya and ignited, destroying the swarm but causing grave injury to Moya.
To make matters worse, the neural clone gains control of John and forces him to return to the planet and he turns himself over to Scorpius in exchange for Jothee. Scorpius plans to remove the chip, killing John in the process, but the rest of the crew, along with Crais and Talyn, are able to rescue him and to retrieve a small fortune from the ruins of the Shadow Depository.
The crew goes to a diagnosian who can heal Moya and who also thinks he can safely remove the chip from John's brain. However, the neural clone still controls John and he leaves Moya, attempting to contact Scorpius and his Command Carrier.
Aeryn goes after John but John damages her Prowler with his module and she is forced to eject. She crashes through the surface of a frozen lake and drowns.
Distraught, John briefly regains control of himself and the crew holds a funeral for Aeryn. Having completed his work on Moya, the Diagnostician begins work on John. The others return to Moya to wait since John, feeling responsible for the death of Aeryn, to whom he had finally pronounced his love and who had pronounced her love for him, did not want them around.
The Diagnostician is able to remove the chip but destroys John's speech center in the process. He is about to restore John's speech when Scorpius appears, kills the Diagnosian and takes the chip, leaving John screaming incoherently on the operating table.
Fortunately Rygel, who has made a deal with the Diagnosian's assistant for a ship, returns to the planet and finds John. He contacts the others and is able to revive the Diagnosian. The facility contains thousands of frozen bodies and the Diagnosian is able to determine that three of them, a race known as the Interion, are compatible with Humans. He is able to use cerebral fluid from one of them to heal John but the Interion is killed in the process.
Meanwhile, Zhaan has found where Aeryn's body is also frozen. With the unwilling aid of Stark, she is able to revive Aeryn and bring her back, but at a great cost to herself.
Aeryn, in turn, is able to save John and D'Argo from a Scarran who is in the facility looking for Scorpius. Unfortunately, the Diagnosian and his assistant are killed and Scorpius and Braca escape. The crew leaves, taking the two remaining frozen Interions with them.
A remnant of the neural clone still exists within John's mind. Weaker than it was before, it appears to John from time to time to offer advice, observations or insults. Often these conversations take place within an imaginary mental landscape. John names the neural clone Harvey.
Chiana learns that D'Argo is planning to ask her to marry him and to move to a farming planet. Not wanting that as her life, she begins an affair with Jothee. When D'Argo learns of this he breaks off his relationship with Chiana. Jothee leaves in shame and Chiana struggles to regain the trust of D'Argo.
The two frozen Interions are accidentally released. One dies but the other, Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis (known simply as "Jool"), survives and becomes another (semi-unwilling) member of the crew.
The saving of Aeryn's life has cost Zhaan dearly and she is dying. Moya is attempting to reach a planet where she may be saved but stops briefly so that John can examine a wormhole. A ship, belonging to the Pathfinders exits from the wormhole and collides with Moya, fusing the two ships together and trapping them within the wormhole.
John is obsessed with the wormhole, especially when he picks up a television transmission from Earth within it. Almost too late, he realizes that the Pathfinders are using Moya's crew. The ships are able to separate and the Pathfinder ship is destroyed, along with Zhaan, who was forced to remain on the other ship in order to achieve the separation.
A small ship of Luxan design is discovered and brought on board Moya. D'Argo, still upset over Chiana's betrayal, begins to spend much time aboard it while trying to learn how to operate it.
The crew encounters an alien who has the ability to duplicate individuals, one of which it then consumes. It duplicates John but the alien is destroyed before he can be eaten, resulting in there being two Johns, each identical to the other.
Moya again encounters Talyn and Crais, now being pursued by a Peacekeeper Retrieval Squad being lead by Xhalax Sun, Aeryn's mother. After repairing Talyn the two ships and crews separate. One of the Johns, along with Aeryn, Rygel and Stark leave on Talyn with Crais. The other John, D'Argo, Chiana, Jool and Pilot remain on Moya.
On Talyn, John and Aeryn finally consummate their relationship and become lovers, which causes some problems with jealousy from both Crais and Talyn. They also encounter Xhalax several times and Aeryn attempts to reason with her mother but her attempts are rebuffed.
The John on Talyn is later contacted by the Ancient who has taken the form of his father. The Ancients are concerned that John is misusing the wormhole knowledge they have given him as they have seen his module traveling through a wormhole. It is then learned that the module was not John's but was instead one built by Furlow, based on the notes he gave her several cycles before.
Furlow had been working with a race known as the Charrid but they have now taken her prisoner and are dealing with the Scarrans. John, the Ancient and the others rescue her but the Scarrans escape with the details of the phase stabilizer, a device necessary for safe passage through unstable wormholes.
The Ancient comes up with a plan to destroy the Scarran dreadnought by using a wormhole as a weapon. They construct the device necessary for this but Furlow kills the Ancient and runs with it. John catches her and retrieves the device but Furlow escapes. John activates the device and the dreadnought is destroyed but he is unable to get out of range and receives a fatal dose of radiation.
John returns to Talyn and says goodbye to those on board; all of whom are his friends, even Crais. He and Aeryn profess their love for one another one final time and he dies.
Talyn goes to a world of the dead so that Aeryn can mourn for John. There, she encounters Xhalax again. This time it seems that they may reach an understanding when Crais appears and, misunderstanding what is happening, kills Xhalax.
Stark leaves again, this time to look for the sprit of Zhaan.
Meanwhile, on Moya, John continues his obsession with wormholes which strains his relations with the rest of the crew to the breaking point.
At one point a strange energy parasite invades Chiana while another takes over Pilot. The crew manages to get rid of the parasites but as a residual effect of her possession Chiana begins to have random visions of future events.
John finally pushes D'Argo too far when D'Argo thinks John has been interfering with his ship. D'Argo knocks John into a coma, from which he barely recovers. D'Argo, meanwhile, learns that the interference was caused by Jool, who was hoping to gain his respect and attract his attention.
The two crews eventually reunite and the John from Moya is shocked to learn that the other John has died. He is more distraught by the fact that Aeryn avoids him and will not talk to him. She feels that "her" John is dead and that this John is not the one she fell in love with. John learns of what happened to Talyn and her crew from a recording left for him by Stark.
Talyn becomes increasingly hard to control and finally, in a moment of panic, destroys an unarmed hospital ship. Reluctantly, the crew shuts down his higher functions which leaves him in a state similar to a coma.
Realizing the implications of the wormhole weapon the Ancient created, John decides that no one should have such knowledge. He determines to destroy Scorpius' new base and make sure his wormhole project ends forever. He is supported by Aeryn and Crais and reluctantly by the rest of the crew.
Rygel works out a deal with Scorpius where the crew will be taken aboard Scorpius' Command Carrier, where the wormhole research is now being carried out. They will be given full immunity while on board and both John and Scorpius will wear I-Yensch You-Yensch bracelets which will cause each of them to feel any pain inflicted upon the other. In exchange, he tells Scorpius that John will willingly help him with his wormhole research.
Everyone goes aboard the Command Carrier but the Peacekeepers there do not welcome them. Especially shunned are Aeryn and Crais, both of whom are seen as traitors. Crais convinces them to take Talyn on board and Talyn's main weaponry is removed.
D'Argo is given information about the location of Macton, his wife's murderer.
Scorpius tells John of his history and John comes to realize why Scorpius considers the Scarrans to be a threat. He starts to question if he should destroy the research or not and begins to slow his plans. Scorpius further threatens him by showing him an image of Earth. He has located it and says that if John does not cooperate then he will see the Earth destroyed. Even without wormholes, the Peacekeepers could reach Earth in 60 cycles.
Things are complicated by the arrival of Mele-On Grayza, a senior Peacekeeper officer from High Command. She orders the crew arrested and the wormhole project canceled. She feels that a diplomatic solution can be reached with the Scarrans but they must stop their research to show good faith.
John decides to proceed with the destruction of Scorpius' research and eventually they decide they must destroy the Command Carrier. To do so, Crais goes aboard Talyn and restores his higher functions. Then, they Starburst from inside the docking bay, destroying themselves but also causing an implosion and the destruction of the Command Carrier.
The others all manage to escape. John encounters Scorpius one last time and they release each other from their bracelets. John offers to help Scorpius to escape but he chooses to remain behind. The two part, still enemies but with a mutual respect for one another.
Moya carries the remains of Talyn and deposits them within the sacred Leviathan Burial Space. The crew, which now includes the seer Noranti, who they rescued from the destruction of the Command Carrier, plans to go their own ways. D'Argo plans to go hunt for his wife's killer, Rygel plans to return and reclaim his throne and Chiana plans to go searching for her brother.
John, sometimes with the aid of Noranti, has visions of a life on Earth with Aeryn but the visions end in disaster. He realizes that he must make a choice between returning home and staying with Aeryn and his friends.
He confronts Aeryn, who is leaving to join a mercenary band, but their relationship is still strained. The death of the other John (and those of her mother and Talyn) is still on her mind and she cannot be with him.
John sits alone in his module as his friends, D'Argo, Rygel, Chiana and Aeryn, leave to go their separate ways. He is about to return to Moya, where only Pilot, Jool and Noranti remain, when Harvey helps him remember something that Noranti told him; Aeryn is with child.
John yells for Pilot to retrieve him so they can go after Aeryn but before he can do so a wormhole appears from nowhere and Moya is pulled away through it. John is left floating in space, his module out of fuel, in the Leviathan Burial Space.
Characters:
These are the main, reoccurring characters.
John Crichton:
Human. Astronaut. John was piloting the Farscape 1 when he was pulled through a wormhole and into the Uncharted Territories. He holds a doctorate in Cosmic Theory from MIT and is an astronaut with IASA; the international successor to NASA. His father, Jack Crichton, was also an astronaut and one of the last people to walk on the Moon.
At first John was completely out of his element but he has quickly learned his way around and is now comfortable in the environment in which he finds himself. His resourcefulness and adaptability have led the others to regard him as the de facto leader on Moya. He is now close friends with all aboard Moya.
During the time he was a prisoner of Scorpius, John was implanted with a neural chip. The chip contains a neural clone; a replica of Scorpius' personality. The primary purpose of the chip was to allow the clone to locate the wormhole information hidden in John's mind by the Ancients. The clone also had the ability to control John.
The chip was removed but a trace of the neural clone remains. The clone can appear to John and communicate with him, often within a mental landscape. John has named the clone Harvey.
At one point John encounters an alien who creates an exact duplicate of him. The two Johns are both equal and identical. The two are separated for a half-cycle, one aboard Talyn and the other aboard Moya.
The John on Talyn finally consummates his relation with Aeryn and the two become lovers. He also encounters the Ancient who took the form of his father, who is able to drive Harvey from his mind. Unfortunately, he also receives a fatal dose of radiation. Surrounded by his friends, Rygel, Stark and even Crais, and Aeryn, the woman he loves, he dies.
On Moya, the John there finds that his obsession with wormholes strains his relationship with his friends to the breaking point.
After the return of Talyn, he realizes that the wormhole knowledge is too dangerous for anyone to possess. He also learns that Aeryn no longer considers him to be the John she loved. That was the other John, who is now dead.
John devises a plan to destroy Scorpius' wormhole research which culminates in the destruction of Scorpius' Command Carrier. He and Scorpius now have a mutual respect for each other, even if they remain enemies.
John comes to realize that he cannot return home to Earth and still remain with the friends he has made in the Uncharted Territories or with Aeryn. In the end, he determines to keep the new life he has found and attempts to leave with Aeryn. Aeryn, however, cannot bear the thought of losing him a second time and leaves without him. After he has decided to stay, all of his friends leave him. Even Moya is pulled away through a wormhole and he is left, alone in his module, floating in space.
Aeryn Sun:
Sebacean. Peacekeeper. Aeryn was one of the Peacekeepers attacking Moya during the escape. When Moya entered Starburst her ship was pulled along with it and she was captured by the escapees. She managed to escape from them and contact Bialar Crais, her former superior officer. Unfortunately, she also attempted to defend John from Crais and was declared Irreversibly Contaminated.
Initially Aeryn was not well liked aboard Moya as she was a Peacekeeper, a member of the organization which had imprisoned most of the others. She also felt a great loss at being removed from that organization as she did not know how to live without the structure in which she had grown up. However, as time has passed the others have come to respect her ability and integrity and she has become their colleague and friend. She has also learned that the new life in which she has found herself is better than her old one and she has now renounced her Peacekeeper heritage.
Aeryn also has a close relationship with Pilot and Moya. She now carries some of Pilot's DNA and Pilot trusts her more than anyone else on Moya.
It has been revealed that Aeryn was once in love with Velorek, another Peacekeeper. He asked her to leave the service with him but she had already revealed to Crais that Velorek had attempted to sabotage Crais' Leviathan Gunship Breeding Program and Velorek was taken away and eventually killed.
Aeryn had admitted that she was in love with John but shortly after this admission John, under control of the neural clone of Scorpius, damages her Prowler. She ejects but falls through the surface of a frozen lake and is drowned.
Her body is frozen by the Diagnosian, supposedly to preserve it for later burial in space. However, Zhaan detects a faint trace of life and, with Stark's unwilling aid, she is able to restore Aeryn to life.
At first Aeryn avoids John as she feels involvement with him may lead to more harm for others. However, after John is duplicated and she is on Talyn with him, she finally gives in to her feelings and the two become lovers. Happy for possibly the first time in her life, she even decides she will return to Earth with him.
She also encounters her mother, Xhalax Sun. Her mother is the head of the retrieval squad out to capture Talyn and the fugitives. She attempts to reason with her mother and to remind her of the love she once had but her attempts fail.
John receives a fatal dose of radiation and dies in her arms. Later, on a planet of the dead where she has gone to mourn for John, she encounters her mother again. This time it seems as if she will get through to her but Crais appears and, not understanding what is happening, kills Xhalax.
After she is reunited with the other John she avoids him, unable to accept that the man she loved, the man who died in her arms, is still around.
Later, on Scorpius' Command Carrier, she encounters many of her former colleagues including her former friend Henta. All of them reject her and she feels as if she is truly alone again.
After the burial of Talyn she leaves to join a mercenary squad which specializes in the assassination of terrorist and corrupt leaders. John attempts to go with her but she still cannot bear to be around him. She leaves, knowing that if fate means for her to be with John then someday she will be.
After she is gone, we learn that she is pregnant.
Chiana:
Nebari. Thief. Chiana was a Nebari prisoner who was being returned to her home world for Mental Cleansing. She now uses her skills to help the crew and never misses a chance to flirt with anyone around.
It is learned that Chiana has a brother named Nerri. She and Nerri were allowed to leave their world but later discovered that they were allowed to leave because they had been infected with a virus. The Nebari intended for the two of them (and many others like them) to spread the virus to many other worlds. They discovered this and are no longer infected. Chiana thought her brother was dead but it is later revealed that he is leading the resistance against the Nebari and wants to keep her away in order to protect her. The Nebari want her hoping that she will lead them to Nerri.
Chiana has an interest in John but he does not return the feelings in the same way she does. It seems that she would like a more intimate relationship while John sees her more as a little sister. She also seems to have a relationship with Rygel but it seems to be more of a mutual understanding between one devious thief and another.
Chiana and D'Argo briefly become lovers but she became disenchanted with the relationship when she learned that D'Argo wanted to marry her then settle down on a farming planet. She carried on a brief affair with Jothee, D'Argo's son, knowing this was something he would not forgive. When D'Argo learned of this he broke off his relationship with her. She has only recently regained some of D'Argo's trust and friendship.
She was briefly possessed by an energy parasite which left her with the ability to sometimes sense events before they occur. These glimpses of the future are slowly becoming more common.
She has slowly developed a friendship with Jool and has become more understanding of Moya, sometimes talking to her directly. She has also told John that she loves him.
Chiana has left to search for the Nebari rebellion and her brother.
D'Argo, Ka:
Luxan. Warrior. D'Argo is one of the escaped prisoners. He had been imprisoned for killing his wife Lo'Laan, a Sebacean woman. However, he is really innocent and his wife was killed by her brother Macton, a Peacekeeper, because Peacekeepers consider unions between different species to be evil. He also has a son, Jothee, who he managed to get to safety before he was captured and with whom he has recently been reunited.
While he at first expressed dislike of Aeryn and distrust of John he has come to accept both as allies and friends. He has great respect for Aeryn as a warrior and as an ally and considers John to be his friend.
After much searching, D'Argo was finally reunited with his son, Jothee. Unfortunately, the reunion did not go as well as he had hoped. Jothee felt that his father had abandoned him and had attempted to separate himself from his past, even going as far as cutting off his tentas.
D'Argo and Chiana briefly became lovers but he wanted to marry her and for them to settle down on a farm with Jothee. Chiana did not want this and started an affair with Jothee, knowing it was one thing that D'Argo could not forgive. He broke off his relationship with her and has only recently begun to trust her and think of her as a friend again.
After his breakup with Chiana, D'Argo spent most of his time examining a strange Luxan spacecraft the crew found in the wreckage of a space station. He is very possessive of this ship and even attacked John when he felt John had been interfering with it. Recently, he has gained full control of the ship and it has been revealed as a very powerful combat craft.
D'Argo has now gained information on the location of Macton. He has left in his ship to track down Macton and gain his revenge.
Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis:
Interion. Debutante. Jool, as she is commonly known, was on an interplanetary tour for her birthday when she, on a lark, decided to trespass on a gem mine, apparently with the intent of robbing it. She was caught and frozen for 22 cycles. She was one of the three Interions in frozen storage with the Diagnosian who healed Moya and removed the neural chip from John. The other two Interions were her cousins. One of them was killed to provide neural fluid for John, the other died shortly after his pod was opened.
Initially, Jool blamed John for her cousin's death but eventually came to realize that he was not at fault. After a rough start she eventually became accepted by the others on Moya and has begun to form a friendship with Chiana. She has also developed an interest in D'Argo and has attempted to help him determine the workings of his ship.
Jool's hair is normally brown but when she is under stress it turns bright red. She also sheds. When frightened or in pain she screams loudly and her screams have the property of melting metal.
Noranti Pralatong, Uta
Traskan. Seer/Mystic. Noranti came aboard Moya under semi-mysterious circumstances after the destruction of Scorpius' Command Carrier. She claims to have been a prisoner who the others rescued but no one aboard Moya seems to remember actually bringing her aboard. She claims to be a cook, healer and negotiator but does not seem to be very good at any of them.
What she does seem to be is some type of seer and she is able to produce powders and herbs which can cause visions in others. She seems to be able to guide these visions and while doing so a third eye opens in her forehead.
The others on Moya seem to find her extremely annoying but have so far allowed her to stay. She seems to have a particular interest in John.
Pilot
Pilot. Pilot. Pilot is the pilot of Moya. His people can be symbiotically linked to a Leviathan and when they are they become the pilot of the vessel. Because of his symbiotic link he cannot leave his Den.
Pilot has come to like the others on Moya and has said that he and Moya enjoy their presence and would miss them if they were to leave. He feels especially close to Aeryn and trusts her more than any of the others but he will also give his support to John without hesitation.
Rygel XVI:
Hynerian. Dominar. Rygel is one of the escaped prisoners. He was the Dominar (ruler) of the Hynerian Empire and supreme monarch of over 600 billion subjects. He was deposed over 130 cycles ago in a coup lead by his cousin. He has been a prisoner ever since then. He was the one who engineered the original escape of the prisoners. Rygel has difficulty walking and usually travels on his floating "thronesled".
Rygel is opportunistic and greedy and his greed and ego have gotten the crew into trouble on more than one occasion. He even attempted to sell the crew out to Scorpius at one point. However, when things go bad he can usually be depended on to do the right thing and he has used his skill to help the crew many times as well. He has also shown that he was probably an honorable and caring ruler who was truly concerned for his people.
Sikozu Svala Shanti Sugaysi Shanu:
Kalish. Researcher. Sikozu was a researcher who, under contract, located the Leviathan Burial Space for the Grudek, who were intent on harvesting Leviathan Toubray tissue. Unfortunately, the Grudek felt that she had done her job too well and attempted to kill her (with her employer's approval) in order to keep her from telling anyone else the location. She is now a reluctant companion of the others.
Sikozu has a great deal of knowledge but most of it is academic; she has almost no actual experience in the fields in which she is an "expert". This often causes problems when things do not work the way she thinks they should. Despite this, she is convinced of her intellectual superiority over everyone else on Moya and has a corresponding superior attitude.
Sikozu also has the ability to reattach severed limbs and to "shift her center of gravity" which allows her to walk up walls and along the ceiling.
Stark:
Banik. Slave. Stark was Scorpius' prisoner and shared a cell with John. He left with the others during the escape from the Gammak Base.
Baniks are able to block thoughts from the Aurora Chair, which is why Scorpius was keeping him. One side of Stark's face is covered by a mask. When he removes the mask he reveals that there is nothing there but a light. The light has a calming or relaxing effect on others. He is also able to give thoughts to others which also seem to be able to calm and relax them.
Stark joined the crew of Moya briefly but vanished mysteriously shortly after the escape from the Gammak Base. He has returned and left several times since.
In his most recent return he brought information regarding D'Argo's son, Jothee. It was he who came up with the plan to rob the Shadow Depository but almost let his hatred of Scorpius interfere with the plan, especially after Scorpius killed several thousand Banik slaves in order to gain control of Jothee.
Stark had fallen in love with Zhaan, a feeling which she reciprocated. He was greatly hurt by her death and has since left the crew to look for her spirit.
"Harvey":
Neural Clone. Harvey is the name John has given to the remnant of Scorpius' neural clone which still remains in his mind. Harvey can appear to John and communicate with him, offering advice or insights or simply to throw out a few insults and give John a hard time.
When Harvey appears to John, he often does so in a mental landscape known as a Mindscape or the Theatre of the Mind. These mental landscapes can take on any number of forms but often have some connection to the situation in which John finds himself.
The name "Harvey" comes from the movie of the same name, in which James Stewart is followed by an invisible six-foot rabbit that only he can see.
Zhaan, Zotoh:
Delvian. Priest. Zhaan was one of the escaped prisoners. She was a tenth level Pa'u, a Delvian priest, and as such had certain powers, primarily the ability to remove or cause pain. Calm in demeanor, she is usually trying to help the others and is the default medic on Moya.
Zhaan was arrested for the murder of her lover, one of the rulers of her home world. His time in office was ending but rather than step down he brought the Peacekeepers to Delvia in exchange for their keeping him in office. The Peacekeepers arrested anyone who opposed him, including Zhaan's father. Zhaan killed him while they were having sex and went insane for a period. After recovering from insanity, she begin the Delvian Seek and became a priest.
For a time Zhaan renounced the Seek after encountering a group of Delvian priests who were attempting to use their abilities to free Delvia from Peacekeeper control but whose methods were such that Delvia may have been better off without them. She later resumed the Seek after being imprisoned on false charges while on the planet Litigara.
After Aeryn's death, Zhaan used most of her energy restoring her to life. The drain was too much for her and she begin to die. Stark, in whom she had found a kindred spirit and lover, attempted to find a planet where she could recover but, when Moya was trapped with the Pathfinder ship in the wormhole, she remained aboard the Pathfinder ship to operate the phase stabilizer there, saving the others at the cost of her own life. Her body was destroyed but her spirit ascended to the next level.
Crais, Bialar:
Sebacean. Peacekeeper. Crais was the commander of the convoy which contained Moya and his brother was killed in a collision with John's module. For these reasons, he chased them into the Uncharted Territories and continued the chase even after he was ordered to return by Peacekeeper High Command. His quest for revenge unsettled him to the point that he even killed his lieutenant as she knew about the order to return.
Crais was contacted by Scorpius after John was captured and Scorpius learned of Crais' actions. He brought charges against Crais which would have resulted in his court-martial and execution but Crais managed to escape to join the crew of Moya. From there, he managed to gain control of Talyn and left aboard him. He was then declared Irreversibly Contaminated by Scorpius.
Crais eventually accepted that the death of his brother was an accident and rejected his life as a Peacekeeper. While operating independently from the others he attempted to pursue peaceful ends with Talyn and came to the aid of Moya and her crew on several occasions.
Crais joined up with part of the crew for a while when one of the Johns, Aeryn and others were forced to remain on Talyn during the time John was duplicated and while they were being pursued by Xhalax Sun's Retrieval Squad.
He was finally able to make peace with that John before he died from radiation poisoning. He also killed Xhalax Sun, unfortunately doing so just after she and Aeryn had finally reached an understanding.
Crais was forced to disable Talyn's higher functions after Talyn destroyed an unarmed Hospital Ship. Later, when the crew went aboard Scorpius' Command Carrier to destroy Scorpius' wormhole research, it was he who came up with the final plan to destroy the Command Carrier. Talyn was taken aboard the Carrier and his primary weapons removed. Then, Crais reactivated Talyn's higher functions and had him initiate Starburst while still within the Carrier. This resulted in the implosion of the Carrier but also resulted in the destruction of Talyn. Crais died with Talyn who was, in some ways, his son.
Moya:
Leviathan. Transport. Moya is a Leviathan, an intelligent, living starship. Leviathans are used as cargo vessels and she was most recently being used as prison transport. She had been kept a prisoner herself by a Control Collar which had been attached to her and prevented her from performing a Starburst, the only defensive capability a Leviathan has. The Control Collar was removed during the prisoner's escape.
Talyn:
Leviathan. Gunship. Talyn was the son of Moya and the result of a Peacekeeper breeding program to create an armed Leviathan. He was immature but also possessed an impressive array of weaponry, including a Sonic Ascendancy Cannon.
Talyn did not require a Pilot but instead responded to direct voice commands from his captain. He accepted Crais as his captain and gave him a neural transponder which gave Crais some control of Talyn. Crais, however, felt that Talyn was difficult to control and considered replacing Talyn's main weapon with a less lethal device.
Talyn eventually became more and more difficult to control; a situation which culminated when he destroyed an unarmed hospital ship. The crew was forced to shut down his higher processes.
Later, he was taken aboard Scorpius' Command Carrier and his primary weapons removed. He was reawakened one last time by Crais and, in order to destroy the Carrier, he initiated Starburst while within the Carrier hanger bay. This caused the Carrier to implode but also resulted in his own destruction.
The remains of Talyn were buried in the sacred Leviathan Burial Space.
Scorpius:
Sebacean/Scarran Crossbreed. Peacekeeper/Scientist. Scorpius is a scientist and was the head of the Gammak Base which was researching wormholes. He also seems to have developed the Aurora Chair. Scorpius replaced Crais as captain of his Command Carrier after revealing Crais' crimes and getting Crais declared Irreversibly Contaminated.
Scorpius is determined to learn all he can about wormholes and for this reason wants the wormhole information hidden in John's mind by the Ancients. He will stop at nothing to get this information.
As a Sebacean/Scarran crossbreed Scorpius has an unusual appearance as well as several abilities and disadvantages. He can see energy signatures well enough to distinguish between a Human and a Sebacean but the natural heat produced by a Scarran is dangerous to the part of him that is Sebacean. He has cooling rods inserted directly into his brain to protect himself from Sebacean Heat Delirium.
Scorpius was a deliberate creation of the Scarrans, who kidnapped his mother, a Sebacean, and raped her in order to produce a crossbreed. She died while giving birth to him. He was then tortured by the Scarrans his entire life until he managed to escape. He offered himself to the Peacekeepers who accepted him for his unique abilities.
Scorpius carries a great hatred for the Scarrans for what they did to him and his mother. His entire wormhole project was created in order to help protect the Peacekeepers and Sebaceans from the Scarrans. He feels they are the only ones who can protect the galaxy from the Scarran threat.
Scorpius created a neural clone of himself and placed a neural chip containing it into John's brain. The purpose of the clone was to locate the wormhole information hidden in John's mind by the Ancients but it did not completely serve its purpose. It managed to locate some of the information but not all of it.
John joined with Scorpius briefly to help him with his wormhole research. Though John had some sympathy for Scorpius' cause, in the end he destroyed his ship and the entire research project. He and John now have a mutual respect for each other though they remain enemies.
For his failures, Scorpius has been stripped of his rank and is a prisoner of Commandant Mele-On Grayza. She and his former assistant Braca now seem to take great pleasure in his torture.
Braca:
Sebacean. Peacekeeper. Crais once called Braca a "consummate Peacekeeper". He did not intend it to be a compliment.
Braca was initially Crais' assistant. After Crais' fall, he became assistant to Scorpius. Now that Scorpius is no longer in favor he has become the right-hand man to Mele-On Grayza. For his loyalty he has been promoted to Captain.
Braca now spends a good deal of his time torturing Scorpius, apparently in revenge for all of the time he spent following Scorpius' orders. He seems to be somewhat under the control of Mele-On Grayza.
Mele-On Grayza:
Sebacean. Peacekeeper. A member of the Peacekeeper High Command, Commandant Mele-On Grayza has been pursuing an alternate solution to the Scarran problem. She is attempting to form alliances between the Peacekeepers and other species in order to provide a show of strength against the Scarrans.
Two things have stood in her way. Scorpius' wormhole project and the actions of John and the rest of Moya's crew. The wormhole project would be seen as a threat so she wanted it ended to show the Peacekeepers' peaceful intent to the Scarrans. John and the others were a threat because the Peacekeepers' continued inability to capture them was making them look incompetent.
Scorpius' project has now been destroyed and Scorpius taken prisoner for his refusal to obey her. She is now pursuing John and the others. She is a ruthless opponent who will use any and all means at her disposal to reach her goals.
Grayza has apparently had a Heppel Oil gland implanted between her breasts, something normally only done by Dellos concubines. This allows her to use her sex as a powerful control over the men around her. However, this gland also will shorten her life span by many cycles so it is unclear why she would have this done.
Xhalax Sun
Sebacean. Peacekeeper. Xhalax was the mother of Aeryn Sun. She and another Peacekeeper, Talyn, had Aeryn out of their love for each other instead of simply having a child as part of the Peacekeeper breeding program. She visited Aeryn while she was a small child to tell her of this.
For this breach of Peacekeeper protocol she was punished by being ordered to kill either Talyn or Aeryn. She chose to kill Talyn, her former lover.
Xhalax was the leader of the Retrieval Squad which was sent after Talyn and the crew of Moya. Aeryn tried several times to reason with Xhalax and to remind her of the love she once felt for her. Her efforts failed but Aeryn was unable to kill the woman who was her mother.
Finally, on a planet of the dead where Aeryn had gone to mourn the death of John, Xhalax and Aeryn met for a final time. This time, perhaps because of her grief, Aeryn is finally able to get through to her mother. Unfortunately, Crais arrives at this moment and, not realizing the situation, kills Xhalax just as she makes her peace with her daughter.
Glossary:
Farscape has its own terminology and technology. Here is a quick primer on some of the things you'll hear in the Uncharted Territories.
- Ancients :
- Intelligent Species. The Ancients look insectoid in their natural form and live in large hive-like structures which hang from above but they have the ability to alter their appearance into other forms. They are a very old race which has the ability to create wormholes at will but who only have limited resources remaining to them. They are looking for a new planet on which to live but need to find one which they can share peacefully with the native inhabitants.
The Ancients encountered John while performing an experiment to see if they could live on Earth. The experiment showed that they could not. However, during the encounter they placed the information needed to create a wormhole into John's mind but hid the information and the fact that it existed from him. Why they did this is unknown.
- Apothecary :
- Noun. Area on Moya where Zhaan has set up her plants, herbs and other medical supplies and equipment and which she uses as a lab and medical facilities.
- Arn :
- Unit of time. Roughly equivalent to an hour.
- Aurora Chair :
- Torture/Interrogation device used by Scorpius. It is unclear if Scorpius invented the Chair or if it is a standard Peacekeeper device. Used to probe the memories of a subject. Any memory can be retrieved by the Chair, even if it is blocked or suppressed. It can be used to erase memories as well. The Chair causes great pain and potentially insanity or death.
- Banik :
- Intelligent Species. Baniks appear human but there are non-obvious differences. Baniks are thought to have no emotions and for that reason are commonly employed as slaves. Actually, they do have emotions but they are able to keep them hidden. They also have the ability to hide their thoughts from others and to give others some of their thoughts.
Stark, the only Banik we have met, has one side of his face covered with a mask. When he removes the mask it is revealed that there is nothing under it but a light. The light has a calming and relaxing effect on anyone exposed to it and it seems to also remove their pain. It is not known if all Baniks have this ability or if it is unique to Stark.
