Procedure For Commissioning A Portrait

The process of commissioning a portrait, while quite flexible, does follow a basic outline.

1- At the initial contact, often on the phone, the purpose and subject of the portrait is established. There is discussion regarding client's preferences for size and price. We make arrangement for the first meeting at my studio or at the clients home or office.

2-I take at least one roll's worth of photos in different poses with different outfits and backgrounds. If the subject is a deceased person, we go over the available photos of the person. I may do a color study , if the subject is available.

3-I go over the photos to select the ones I believe are workable and mail them to the client for selection. When the selection is made, I meet with the subject again to do an oil study in the selected pose to get accurate colors, which the photos often distort.

5-Prepare finished portrait (3 to 6 months)

6-Select a suitable frame

(These may be modified as necessary)

How To Care For Your Portrait

  • Keep the painting away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight, which might, over time, dry out, fade and crack the paint surface.

  • Avoid touching the paint surface. Acids from the skin can have an effect on the paint in the long run.

  • To clean, use a dry feather duster to lightly stroke the painting surface from side to side, starting at the top edge and working your way down. Do NOT use any chemicals or wet cloth to clean the painting. The frame can be gently cleaned with a damp paper towel.

  • If the painting gets a scratch, it's possible to repair with paint and I'll be happy to help. For puncture or tear damage, call your local art museum, arts council or art association for the name of a qualified art restorer.
