        Military: He was drafted into the British army and served as such during the American Revolution, during which he was wounded in the arm. He was at the Battle of Yorktown and present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, captured by Washington and returned to England after peace was declared.

        He studied medicine for three years and practiced surgery. Immigrated to America via Québec in 1792 or 1793. His ancestors were Quakers but he was a Methodist.
