           Since 1997, I have been a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a patriotic, educational organization, composed of descendants of Union veterans. I am Past Commander of the Phil Sheridan Camp No. 4 of San José, California, and Past Commander & current Councilman and Signals Officer of the Department of California and Pacific. I have also served on the National Committee on History.

H 4 x great-granduncle Private; enlisted & mustered in 2 Sep 1864 for one year; discharged w/regiment at Washington DC, 6 Jul 1865; contracted chronic diahhrea & intermittent fever June 1865 while serving between Richmond VA & Washington DC; treated at Regimental Hospital at Fort Sumner. Regiment engaged at Winchester VA (9/19/64); Cedar Creek VA (10/19/64); Weldon Railroad VA (12/31/64); Petersburg VA (1/14, 3/25-26 & 4/1-2/65); and Sailor's Creek VA (4/6/65).
      USA ANGUS, Henry E. 10th Michigan Cavalry, Co. F 3 x great-granduncle Private; enlisted 12 Sep 1863 for 3 yrs; discharged due to disability 20 Feb 1864 at St. Louis MO; severely injured at Camp Nelson KY during the winter of 1863-64, while riding his horse to water, the horse slipped on an icy hill, fell and rolled over him.

F 3 x great-grandfather Private, promoted to Farrier; enlisted 31 Aug 1863 for 3 yrs; discharged due to disability 3 Oct 1865; received 3 gunshot wounds, as follows: in upper left leg at Carter's Station TN (Watauga Bridge) 24 Apr 1864; through the right wrist at Flat Creek TN 23 Aug 1864; and in upper left arm and through left lung at Knoxville TN 16 Mar 1865; also received saber cut to head; member of Henry F. Wallace Post G.A.R. at Corunna MI.
      USA APPLETON, John Henderson 17th Indiana Infantry, Co. E 3 x great-grandfather Enrolled 27 Aug 1862 at Columbia City IN; mustered in 3 Sep 1862 at Indianapolis ; honorably discharged 22 Jun 1865 at Nashville TN. Engaged at Hoover's Gap TN 24-25 June 1863. Equipped with Spencer Repeating Rifles in May 1863, this unit was part of Col. John T. Wilder's "Lightning Brigade" which helped cover the Union retreat at the battle of Chickamauga GA on 19 Sep 1863
      USA ARBUCKLE, James D. 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, Btty. L 3 x great-granduncle Enlisted & mustered in at Indianapolis on 3 Oct 1864; joined his unit in the field on 22 Oct 1864; injured 18 Feb 1865 at New Orleans LA when a mule fell upon him, thereby breaking his leg; treated at St. Louis General Hospital at New Orleans, where remained from Feb-Apr 1865; furloughed 20 Apr 1865 for 60 days to convalesce; returned to Indiana where he remained with leave until muster out on 12 Aug 1865 due to the end of his term of service.

E 3 x great-granduncle Private; enlisted 16 Sep 1861; taken prisoner 14 Dec 1862 (place not stated) and paroled; mustered out 24 Oct 1864 at Brownsville, AR. Regiment saw action at New Madrid, MO; seige of Island No. 10; seige of Corinth; Iuka, MS; Holly Springs, MS; and others.

A 3 x great-granduncle Private; enlisted 27 Feb 1864; mustered in 26 Mar 1864 at Indianapolis; mustered out w/regiment 10 Jan 1866 at Baton Rouge LA; kicked in the back by one of the mules attached to the artillery at Morganza Bend LA in July 1864.

B 2 x great-grand half-uncle Private; enlisted 13 May 1861 at Grand Rapids MI; mustered in 10 Jun 1861; saw action in the battle of Blackburn's Ford (First Bull Run); served under Gen. McClellan in his Peninsular Campaign of 1862, where his unit participated in the seige of Yorktown & the Battle of Williamsburg; died of typhoid fever 15 Jun 1862 at US Military Hospital, New Haven CT as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Fair Oaks VA on 31 May 1862.
      USA FOSTER, William J. 1st Michigan Infantry, Co. B 2 x great-grand half-uncle Corporal; served under Gen. McClellan in his Peninsular Campaign of 1862, where his unit saw action in the battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, Turkey Bend, White Oak Swamp, & Malvern Hill; assigned to Fitz John Porter's Corps at the battle of Second Bull Run; took part in battles of Antietam & Fredericksburg; severely wounded in the spine at the battle of Chancellorsville VA on 3 May 1863 & died at Armory Square Hospital, Washington DC on 12 May 1863.

      CSA MITCHELL, William C. 35th Arkansas Infantry, Co. F 3 x great-granduncle Private; enlisted 15 Aug 1862 in Benton Co AR; regiment engaged at Prairie Grove 7-8 Dec 1862, and in attack on Helena AR 4 Jul 1863. At the latter, Pvt. Mitchell was captured, sent to Military Prison at Alton IL on 9 Jul 1863, and thence to Camp Douglas, Chicago IL on 23 Jul 1864. Died 5 Dec 1864. Buried in Grave 223, Block 2, Chicago City Cemetery.

      Note: The 35th Arkansas Infantry was also known as the 22nd Arkansas Infantry (not to be confused with an earlier 22nd Arkansas Infantry, which was redesignated as the 20th Arkansas Infantry).

F 3 x great-grandfather Private; mustered in 31 Aug 1863 at Springfield MO; Aug 1863 listed as "on extra or daily duty; Police duty"; then on detached duty several times, namely, at Cassville MO in Mar-Apr 1864 and Sep-Oct 1864, at Springfield MO in Nov-Dec 1864, and at Huntsville MO in Jan-Jun1865; stricken down with sunstroke in Jul or Aug 1864 while serving as a guard escorting a train from Cassville MO to Fayetteville AR; mustered out 23 Aug 1865 at Fayetteville AR. His wife, Rebecca E. Hammons, was the widow of Confederate veteran John M. Jackson who died during the war.
