The Hybrid Pig Experiment

A good friend and I have had the discussion as to why no one has developed a small homestead pig, so we decided to work on it.  We'd  like to breed a pig that would mature to about 120 pounds, with enough meat to make butchering an animal that size worth our time.  Here are some weanlings we just brought home to start the project.  They're Hampshire/Potbelly crosses.  We'll select for animals that have the better meat to fat ratio and look of the Hamps with the smaller size contributed by their Potbelly mother.  Eventually, we'd like to incorporate a third breed of a smaller size into the mix.

We had just unloaded the new piglets, and had the guineas
wondering "what in the world?"

By now the guineas had become quite concerned.

A close-up of the whole crew.  We'll keep a pair to start
our experiment.

Our newest addition, Esther Williams, because she swims so
well (long story.)  She's half pot-belly and half Russian boar

Esther meets the rest of her family, the above piglets at
about 8 months.  She'll remain small, while
her Russian boar breeding will make her leaner.
