These are links to a few of my favorite freebie software programs - programs that I actually use. These work for Windows 95 and Windows 98 (I haven't tested them on anything else). I'll be adding to these from time to time. If you find any deadlinks, please let me know. Note: While these programs have worked satisfactorily for me, the user must assume all responsibility and risk for using them.

Name of Software & Link Type of Software Description/Comments
Email Programs:
Eudora E-mail client The best freebie e-mailer I've seen yet. The pay-for version is exactly the same, but without advertising.
MiniMail E-mail client SMTP protocol Probably the smallest email software (122KB) you will ever use, MiniMail has just one simple purpose - sending email (i.e., it does not receive).
Email Remover
(a direct download)
Anti-spamming e-mail client The software author seems to have disappeared, so you can download it from here. It allows you to preview and delete email before you download it.
Popcorn Email Client POP3/SMTP e-mail client • It works as a client/server application, reading mail "directly" from POP3 servers.
• It is ideally suited for "on the road" mail access, for scanning, reading and sending mail over slow connections.
• It supports multiple user profiles, enabling you to read and send mail from any number of accounts.
• It requires no installation, no data is saved locally other than a portable .INI file containing account information.
• It is ideal for cleaning up POP3 accounts, removing spam, unwanted mail, large attachments etc...
• It has a mail editor allowing you to compose and send new mail, reply to, forward and re-direct received mail.
• It fits easily on a floppy or other portable (even read only) media, making it easy carry around at all times.
FTP Clients:
WS_FTP LE File-transfer protocol client Upload/download files with a great ftp client. I use it all the time for my web sites. A pay-for version also available.
Text Editors:
EditPad Classic Text editor A great text editor. Also available are EditPad Lite and the pay-for EditPad Pro.
Metapad Text editor Small, fast text editor, more complete than Notepad.
1st Page 2000 HTML/Script editor I've used a lot of outstanding html editors,  but this one is particularly attractive, because it can easily be configured to the expertise of the user; i.e., good for dummies like me and good for pros.
Stone's Text Tool Text/html editor A simple text editor, but great for editing and writing HTML, as it is color syntax sensitive (also for Java, Pascal and og C++)
File Compressors:
FreeZip File compressor FreeZip is a small, simple, but great right-click mouse file and directory compressor/ decompressor.
Power Archiver File compressor • Supports ZIP, CAB, LHA (LZH), TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2, BH, RAR, ARJ, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZ, BZIP2, XXE, and UUE file formats
• Features an internal viewer that supports TXT, RTF, BMP, ICO, WMF, EMF, GIF, and JPG files
• Creates ZIP, RAR, ARJ, LHA and BH self-extracting archives
• Completely integrates with Windows
• Repairs corrupted ZIP archives
• Can extract multiple archives at the same time
• Features automated backups
• Can create multiple archives at once with Batch ZIP
Dariolius File splitter A great little program for splitting up programs to save on several floppy disks.
Utilities  Programs:
WinKey Windows key shortcut key enhancer Did you know that the Windows key on the bottom row of your computer keyboard already gives you 9 shortcuts? WinKey enables you to make dozens! Very cool for shortcut key freaks.
CKFolder Folder creator CKFolder is a small utility that allows you to create new folders from a right-click context menu in Explorer.
CKRename Multiple file renamer A compact, powerful, highly configurable file renaming utility that features a very intuitive user interface.
Convert Converter utility An easy-to-use unit conversion program that will convert the most popular units of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, pressure, energy and many others, including the ability to create custom conversions!
Add-Remove Pro System utility Displays the entries in the Add/Remove Programs list of Windows Registry, checks if each is valid, and uninstalls the selected program or removes the entry from the list.
SetFileDate File utility Changes time & date of files.
Reference Programs:
WordWeb Thesaurus/dictionary This freebie is absolutely great. Works both as a stand-alone and a plug-in to Microsoft Word
Magical Jelly Bean Dictionary Internet dictionary This small program surfs Internet dictionaries to give you just the definition you are looking for.
Security Programs:
Secret Stuff
(a direct download)
File encryptor What's really neat about this encryptor is that you can send encrypted files by e-mail, and the receiving party can open them without needing to have the  program to decrypt them (it does help to have the password, however). No longer available on the Internet, so you can download here.
Cryptext File encryptor Performs strong file encryption and yet is a very small program.
Open Password
(a direct download)
See behind the **** This is a tiny (only 4KB) program from Russia that lets you see what your hidden password is underneath those **** stars. Only works for passwords saved on your computer, not those found on Internet sites. The software author of this program has disappeared, so you can download it from here.
Eraser File deleter This program allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.
Whisper Password protector Keeps all your passwords under lock and key.
ZoneAlarm Internet security For all of us paranoids, this program offers amazingly good protection for individual computers from attacks and information theft over the Internet. There is also a pay-for pro version.
