I was in the Air Force from 1960 to 63. I was sent to Syracuse University by "uncle" and became a "203"; a Bulgarian Linguist. SBG 95-60 was the class. Other than for the great friends I made back then...It sucked back in "62-63" at "good ole" Karamursel Air Station (KAS)!!!!!!! 18 months of hell. However......life has kind since then.

Great site, great idea.... I was a Spanish linguist who went thru Monterey in the early 90s. My roomie was a Vietnamese linguist named Bob Stevens. I ran into a Chinese linguist who knew Bob. I am trying to track Bob down to say 'hey' again. Any ideas, anybody know of Bob? Thanks!

Very nice job on creating this site. Many of my old friends and roomates were MD's. Stan Long, Bill McCartha, Harvey Goldstein, Ron Moore, Mike McIntosh, Bill Grundman and others from DLI East Coast c. 1969. I have recently created a Website which some of you MD types might be interested in. "Silent Warriors Of East Asia". http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Lights/2052. It has a link to this site. It is dedicated to USAFSS Korean linguists and all those who lost their lives in East Asia during the Cold War. Enjoy. Fred Straub MI Skivvy Nine '69-'72

I am trying to find out what happened to the 6924th SS at Danang. Did it move, change designations, get wiped out, what happened? I see reference to a bunch of other units but not the one that was at Danang. I was there in 65-66 so I know it existed.

Wow! Lots of contacts with this and the Silent Warriors page. I'm still in the Reserves---coming up on 30 years total. Flew EC-47s out of Danang and Ubon, Cat IV SEFE (202)---married a Thai (bad move), got commissioned (1980), resigned 1986. Active in Air Force Association, and from now on the Prop Wash Gang. I see lots of familiar names, great! Keep it up!

I was a P20371, mandarin Chinese translator/instructor. I studied basic Chinese at Yale in 1963, and intermediate Chinese at Monterey in 1965-66 I was stationed At Linkou in 1964 and 1965 with a tdy to Bangkok for four months in 1965. I was later stationed at Kadena from 1966-1969 and worked at JSPC at Torii station during that time. I then was stationed at Goodfellow from 1969 to 1971 as an instructor. I have been trying to find any of my classmates and anyone who knew me at my vaious duty stations.

I was in country 1965-66. I was a Korean and Chinese linguist before studying Vietnamese. Twelve of us who were either Russian or Chinese linguists studied at Berlitz in D.C. I got my Korean and Chinese at Yale (IFEL) so unlike most of you I never saw Monterey. I did, however, spend a fair amount of time at Goodfellow both as student and instructor. Would like to hear from some of the OLD timers.

I was stationed at the 6994th in NKP from August 70 thru Feb 72. I didn't realize it at the time, but this was an experience of a lifetime. Met a lot of great guys and would love to hear from them again. Some of the names were Monty Hargrove, Ed Kulik, Ron Lightner, Skeeter Dickerson, Ed Flinchum, David Healy, Richard Derrick, Ben Dorn. Anyone know these guys let me know.

Yokota, 6988SS, 1967-1969, TDYs 6990 in 1968 after Tet, Osan AB 1968-discharge after the Pueblo; left AF at end of 1969, Degree from UC Berkeley, 1972, Slavic Languages and Soviet Area Studies (what for?), been a salesman for 22 years now, rejoined Air National Guard in 1978, commissioned 1st Looey in 1981, just retired Major out of San Diego, Sept 1, 1999, roast to follow. Can't get the memories of all that I did while flying for the SS out of my mind. Not sure whether they are nightmares or wet dreams, but they are often time pleasurably haunting. Am on kind of a quest to retrieve, if not some of the experiences that don't first kill me, then, at least, some contact with the ones I did all those really, really, awful things with. Actually, my present wife from the few stories that I have told her wishes that she knew me then as well... she says that I sound like I was a lot more fun then. I don't really recall. Since finding this series of websites and links I have trolled through randomly to recover some names. I haven't found many that ring a bell, but maybe I had way more fun than anyone should have had. But the sites are still building and more names will be added. Just last week I visited the C130 Memorial and the National Cryptologic Museum at Fort Meade. Unfortunately, for now, there wasn't much to relate to for us Cold War(riors). But it was an awfully sobering experience. If I had to do it all over again, I would do it all over again.

I was a radio intercept analysis specialist (RI20250-1) stationed at the 6924th Security Squadron near Da Nang, Republic of Viet Nam, from March 1968 through March 1969. I worked mainly at voice intercept analysis; and, given the prejudice of the time--that only linguists could possibly analyze voice intercept--I found myself being pulled one way by the "voice shop" and another way by the "good old boys" who couldn't handle the idea of a mere analyst analyzing their precious voice intercept. But I prevailed (ask Chinese linguist James S. Poelman). Apart from the above-mentioned struggle over turf, I thoroughly "enjoyed" working with the USAFSS linguists; although, truth be told, the NSG linguists with whom I worked while at the 6924th Security Squadron were much more receptive to my efforts and were at the same time of immense help: "Mr. Dibble" and Ed Dobarro come to mind. The NSG guys were much more laid back and more job-as-top-priority oriented than the USAFSS turf-defenders. But, we were all in the same bunker (or roadside ditch) when the bad guys' rocket artillery and mortars said hello.

I was at the '90th from 1972 - 1975 as an MB. Flew plenty of COMBAT APPLE sorties as MB/14-op. Also did time at OLEA 6948th (Offutt), 6903rd, 6988th, and 6994th (after it was revived at Ft. Meade). Started my career flying combat sorties in SEA...ended my career flying combat sorties in the Persian Gulf! Retired in 1992. Outstanding site providing a much needed service! Enjoyed seeing familiar names and reliving shared experiences. Best regards to all!

Great site. Enjoy seeing familiar names. If you are or know anyone from Class 6N-71 at El Paso, have them contact me. We are trying to put together a class roster. After the war, I switched to Arabic, took a commission, was stationed at the US embassy in Baghdad in the 1980s, and then was fortunate to serve as General Schwarzkopf's interpreter during Desert Storm.

Was a 203-MA (Russian) with the 6988th at Yokota, Japan, from April 1969 through August 1971. Lot of MA classmates/friends (Peter Quinn, Ted Ledgerwood and others whose names escape me)wound up at the 6990th in April of '69. I volunteered for the 90th but was sent to Japan by the luck of the draw. Good luck it was, too, I suppose. Did some TDY time in Itazuke (EC-121s) and Osan (the reliable C-130s) and generally had a good time, but was happy to get out. I never did get a trip to SEA. You had to re-up for that. Would like to hear from old mates. Also would like to hear from Kent Hixon, a basic training buddy who was quite good at Russian--so they sent him to DLI for Vietnamese. He was at the 90th.

A shovel in one hand (for the sand bags), a "33" in the other hand to help endure the long hours of work/sand bags/work, etc. Danang in 65/66. Danang(TDY)67/68, Nha Trang 69, Pleiku 69/70, Nha Trang 70/71. They were interesting times and tours. Long time ago, and no desires to return, but the memories remain. Hello to anyone who remembers me, and I will answer e-mail notes. (a 202X0) Best regards, Nelson

Great pix at the 7thRRFS web site at: http://www.topsecretsi.com/users/bogart/. Spent my last year with SAC at Ellsworth AFB, S.D. Was a 20351 MB. We were awesome!

I was a russian linguist who graduated from Monterey DLI in 1973 and was stationed at NSA, Ft. Meade, MD before my then husband and I were released under the Palace Chase Program. I often wonder what happened to my classmates. I'm not sure this is the right forum but thought I'd post here anyway. David Moore from Iowa, I think of you often. I've been married for over 19 years now and have a new name. My training was Monterey to Goodfellow and then to Ft. Meade. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I wish my memory were better, but I can't remember names too well. But if I hear them, I'm sure I will recognize them. the former Judi Andriesse Brosius (a DLI marriage to first hubby)

Many thanks to Wyco for the efforts to do this. Over the years, I have often thought what other 203's MD's are doing and where they are. Scrolling through the directory brought back many memories. Hope this will be maintained and we can continue to update one another. Again, thanks for all the work and effort.

I got this site from the FTVA Newsletter, looking for some old 203 buds from Clark (61-62) and San Vito (62-63). After the Air Force, I spent 33 years as a civilian at the Fort and retired to Cape Cod in Aug 97.

I am a former 20351-1 from the 1950s and 1960s in Germany (6912th Bingen, 6910th Sembach, instructor in voice intercept processing school 1962-66), who took the opportunity for a commission and then transitioned into PHOTINT, LITINT, and HUMINT. I am a graduate of the AZK course as a 2d Lt hoping to go to Yokota after my Shemya stint in 1966-67, but ended up on the Moscow-Washington Hot Line 1967-1970. I did my SEA tour 1970-71 in the interrogation business (HUMINT), then went to Potsdam, East Germany as Air Liaison Officer accredited to the CINC, Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. I worked closely at that time with command troops and ASA in Berlin (Tempelhof, Teufelsberg, Marienfelde). I am most impressed by the way the airborne troops stick together and keep in touch, the SOB group (Gary Belcher's initiative, I believe), and now this web page as examples. Congratulations! Hope you continue to find your former comrades in arms. Very best wishes for further success. Bill Burhans (Head of Representation, Moscow Representation Office, Baker Hughes, Incorporated, oilfield service and equipment company; a linguist who has made a life career in the Russian language as translator, interpreter, and consultant)[the latter being that SOB from out of town with all the answers and a spiffy attache case)

203-2 (Chinese)with basic and intermediate at Yale/IFEL in '60 and '64. Tours at 6927th Onna Point, Okinawa '62-'63, 6987th Shu Lin K'ou, Taiwan '65-'66 and the 6924th at Danang '67-'68. Although I didn't get airborne duty in USAFSS, I ended up seeing a lot of I Corps from the air on Air America flights out of Danang to such exotic spots as Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Nai and Tam Ky as a courier for USAID in my "off duty" hours. Have some great aerial "before and after" shots of Hue when the occupation see-sawed in '68 after TET. After some 38 years thanks to e-mail and the 'Net, I've been able to hook up with old classmates and fellow USAFSS'ers. Plan on attending a third reunion on 6927th alumni in Las Vegas in September. I think very few of us would deny that crappy assignments aside, in retrospect the USAFSS years had to be some of the greatest years of our lives.

Saw the locator site mentioned in the FTVA Newsletter. Got excited, thinking I might I might locate some old buddies. Got on the site and found it was for SEA vets. I was a 203 and never set foot in Viet Nam. Outside of a remote tour in Shemya spent all my time in Europe. Hope someone comes up with a 203 locator site that would include the rest of us.

Started out at NKP in March of '72 in time to catch the Quang Tri invasion. Became SAM analyst in time to work the Dec '72 bombings. for Dog Flight under Capt. Jack Yerby and later Capt. Frank Lindauer. Went to Kadena after that. I remember that we did a lot of Songbird and GDRS work. Operated Compass Flag with the QU-22 "Quacker" and later the EC-130. Of course the "Book" and "Torch". Cureently Commercial Photographer based in Houston.

Was surfing, looking for research for a possible book on Combat Apple ops and "saw the sight on the SDU" so I stopped by. Spent 13 years at the 90th from 1982 to 1975 with breaks for DLI. Was an MA but spent a lot of time on Doggers during that time. Like what I see so far, I'll be back for more...

I was here yesterday and have 2 questions: What is the URL for the site that will allow direct access? I have got to the site only using Alta Vista search for '203 locator'. I'd like to pass this info to a former ASA type who is head of the reunion organization of the Field Station at Clark Field. And to elaborate on my brief note of yesterday, I was at Army Language School (that was Monterey before the name change to DLIWest) for Vietnamese, graduated June 1959. Our neighbor class was and AF Chinese group, most of whom went to Okinawa for flight duty. I was then sent to 9th ASA Field Station at Clark Field, PI, and our neighbors were the 6925th USAFSS Squadron. They had Chinese linguists working the VN target, and we cooperated on some activity in 1961 during the Laotian Airlift. I went over to the AF shop and learned more about little jungle runways and funny looking Russian puddle jumpers than I ever thought I would. Other than that, as you all may read in the excellent book "One to Count Cadence", by my former ASA colleague James Crumley, our group didn't get along too well with the zoomies. But time heals all, and I would recommend that you investigate the earlier generation of folks who served in the SEA theater. Some of us are still alive and kicking, and I would like to locate a few AF friends. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Found the site through Steve's note in the FTVA Newsletter. I was an MB at the 6988th and flew many droning missions in the GOT out of Bangkok and later Danang. I think you ought to add the 6988th to your list of units. We pulled TDY duty from 1965 to 1968 for linguists and maintenance troops for the C-130s. My crew seemd to have the luck of arriving just after or leaving just before the VC would lob rockets into Danang. I did two tours with the 88th and left for a remote in Korea shortly before the unit was deactivated at Yokota in 1972. Fortunately MGEN Larson had the foresight to reactivate the 6988th at RAF Mildenhall when he renamed the 6954th. I went on to a tour at Offutt with the 6949th and another remote at Osan before going to OTS in 1977-78 and trading MSgt stripes for gold bars.. Did my first commissioned tour at the 6990th which was my last airborne assignment. Finished my career at HQ ESC and HQ AFIC before retiring in Oct 1993. Spent thirty years and worked both the enlisted and officer career fields in the command.

Don't know if Dom is running this site but it is appropriate that his picture is on the home page. I was (was and always will be) a dogger at the 90th from 87-91. I was greatly influenced by the likes of Bob Lantz, Dom, Hagland, Ward, Breedlove and never ever forget Charlie! As a ghetto op I had my share of frustration and as a DOADer I found a lot of support and memories that will never fade. I was one of the first (following Flanagan) from the Doggers who were stolen for JCRC and stayed with JCRC and JTF until 1994. I am now out and living in HCMC, Vietnam, but have access to internet and would loved to hear from some of the other guys that lived in the dorms at Kadena from 87-91. Anyone that knows the whereabouts of Dan Burmester, Don Robinson, Jody Vogel, David Bung Bradley... and anyone that would like to find me - I will keep the cans on. Doggerz Rule

Thanks for your efforts, Steve. I agree with Tom Glass, we weren't 203s, or 202s, or 292s. We were young men (and some of us not so young), sent to do a job, and I think we did it to the best of our ability. I'm proud to have done my part. I made some lifelong friends then, and some more recent ones via your web site and that of JC Wheeler. Keep up the good work. And I would still like to locate John Klee if anyone out there knows his whereabouts.

Two tours as a Dogger at the 6990th (1978-82 and 1985-91). Other USAFSS unit was the 6987th SS from Shu Lin Kou Air Station, Taiwan (1975-76). Proud to have served with the finest group(s) of linguists anywhere, anytime. Retired Sep 95 after a stint with Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA) organization in Hawaii. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the 25th annual Fall of Saigon Party in Las Vegas next year, 2000. Cheers! Mark

I was a 203 who enlisted in 1974 (retired 1999). My first assignment as a Chinese linguist was Okinawa (6990th). Although I never set foot in Vietnam, flying all those sorties with Gary Hagland or Charlie Thomas and the whole crew is something I'll never forget (getting tax free pay in those days was not bad either). Would love to hear from the legends I knew during that time.

Although I was a 202, I flew 122 missions out of Tsn and DNG combined. I began my tour at TSN in Dec 70 and went TDY to DNG in Feb 71. They must have liked me because they kept me. I have been active on the site by J C Wheeler (ec-47.com) and plan to attend the 6994th reunion in May. Prior to my SEA tour, I was stationed at Darmstadt, Germany with the 6910th Security Wing. I have been fortunate to connect with friends from 30 years ago and appreciate those of you have made this possible through your hard work on these sites. Sincerely, and from the heart, thank you---TROZ

Enjoyed the site. Even though I am/was a 292. Will keep checking back to find friends and fellow crewmembers I have flown with in the past. Suggestion - A lot of us flew in and out of and over Vietnam while assigned to the 6988th in Yokota, Japan. You might add this unit to your list.

USAFSS 1959-1966. It must have been nice flying those HOGNOSES after we got all the bugs out. I flew the first RC135's from 6985th at Eielson in 62 and 63 before going to the 47th in Key West. Does anyone remember the Cotton Candy or Office Boy projects flown on the original "A" model water wagons 135's,and are there any photos in existance of tail numbers 60-356,357 or 362. You've got a great site, and I'd sure like to hear from some of the first Peanuts Characters

I was a 203 (Chinese Linguist- Yale basic/intermediate) at 6924th RSM Onna Point Okinawa 61-63; 6987th RGM at Shu Lin K'ou AS, Taiwan 65-66; 6924th RSM Danang 67-'68. Looking forward to some new web sites that will bring more of us together in the future (while we're still around). The 6927th web site has a wealth of info, with over 500 "alumni" listed/contacted. Hope you'll be able to bring some more info together on the 6987th & 6924th in the future. Great work so far!

I never served in Vietnam. I am currently in the USAF and in Intel. I am in Airman Leadership School and we are doing a project where we pick an enlisted person and write a paper and do a speech on them. I picked Retired CMSgt William (Billy) Daniels Jr. He was a vietnamese linguists stationed in Vietnam during the war. I came across this site while I was searching for information on Comfy Echo and Combat Apple. CMSgt Daniels flew on the RC-135 and C-130 during the war. I am still in need of information so if anyone served with him during this time, please e-mail me. He was stationed at Da Nang and various other places. The Chief lives here in Hawaii and is still very much involved in the intelligence career field. He works for the 692nd IG which is part of AIA now. I would very much like to get some information from people who served with him, their impressions, and what unclassified information I can get on the missions would be helpful. I haven't been able to find much out during my internet research. Any help would be appreciated.

Chao cac anh. Great start on the site, Wyco. The names, places, and photos bring back strong memories. I can almost smell the benjo ditch, of nuoc mam, and other aromatic substances. Anyone who took that great public bus ride from NKP base to town remember the ticket takers? And who could forget the water soluble paper on station! Ever wake up with streams of four-figure VN code running through your head? Would love to see more photos and links. Han hanh gap cac anh nua! TV

First, have to thank Steve (Wyco) for steering me to this page. Some background info above and beyond what's checked: Language background is MA/MD. MA from Syracuse U. (3-58 to 1-59). From there tours to 6921RGM, Misawa AB (59-62); separated; re-up 1-63, back to Japan: 6986RSM, Wakkanai AS (63-64); Trabzon, Turkey (64-65); HQ Spec Com Center, San Antonio (65-67); ZIP school Ft Meade, MD (67-68); 6994th Tan Son Nhut/Pleiku (68-69); 6990th and all those TDYs to Cam Ranh Bay (69-72); 6949th Offutt AFB (an MA once again) 72-76; 6985th Eielson/Shemya (76-77); 6949/6944 Offutt AFB again (77-79); HQ ESE, Ramstein AB, Germany (79-81); 6949th again (!) and then finally to HQ ESS Offutt (81-88). Retired July 1, 1988 after 30 yrs 1 month 26 days (but who counts). Still residing in Omaha/Bellevue NE trying to make honest living before really hanging it up. Great site and outstanding source for e-mail contacts. Quick scan revealed many missing names from not only 90th days, but also entire USAFSS/ESC years. I have box full of all kinds of PCS/TDY orders along with many Air Medal orders which lists many, many names. Perhaps, given time, I can make a lot this available. Regret have no old phots; all that resides in "memory banks". Do what you need to add me to list. Will visit as often as time permits. Thanks again.

I was stunned. At least I think I was. I know the government has long denied that we exist. I glad to see not all zip lingy types are as apatheic as I am. Good Job and hope to hear from others who shared the experiences of what-ever-it-was we went thru. Maybe I'm not the only who has not quite shared the American dream after SEA. I like the statement most of us will never grow up because we started growing old so young. It was an unforgettable experience.

Believe it or not I was sent tdy to the 6990th at Okinawa & Onna Point from Pleiku for 3 months Dec,68 Jan & Feb 69. I was friends with 2 backenders on the loss of the EC47 Feb 5, 1969 over Laos. Experienced many close calls on those birds. As a Russian/Vietnamese 203 I have many good memories as well as sad ones. If any one out there was a classmate at Syracuse (Russian)1/65-9/65 or Ft. Meade/NSA (Vietnamese) 5/67-10/68 please e-mail and maybe we can have a ba-muoi-ba at the June reunion in San Antonio! Do-svedanie.....Doug

Nice site. It's about time you MD's come out of the closet. I was a former MI (Korean) linguist with 6988th at Yokota and 6949th at Offutt 1969 - 1972. McIntosh and McCartha were my roomates at DLI in DC. Knew many other crazy MD's from DLI(EC) (Long, Moore, Goldstein, etc) and would like to here from them. Bunch of cheeting, lying, poker players! Just kidding. Good job coming out of the closet. Skivvy Nine Lives!

A wee bit after my time as a 203 but interesting anyway.Language school (Chinese at Yale) Sep '57- May '58 6927th RSM Oct '58 - April '60 NSA Civilian (ACOM-4, B3) May '60 - Sept '68 You guys are from a completely different "culture" than ours. I was strictly "chairborne." The roughest part of my tour was having to do burn detail every couple or months and occasionally being sent out to stand retreat formation when we got off day shift on Fridays and still had our required ties on (fatigues were for swings and mids only). No need for survival training for us--except maybe what to do with an individual C ration in the barracks when they sent the KPs and waitresses home because of an approaching typhoon. Cheers. S. F.
