Comments: Great to hear about some of the guys we knew and did not know (but w/ whom we would have tremendous affinity)! Worked the trailer out back at NKP--Lester Keith was always upset that I got assigned the freq the action was on!
I was always managing somehow to schedule wisdom teeth extraction on flight days at Kadena, and then when I did fly, it seems I was always late for mission briefing. What memories! Thnx for the pictures page of the planes. I am a Baptist minister now, and have a picture of #135 fm Kadena hanging in my study. I recently showed my sons the Gator-Torch patch that Searls had done--of course it meant nothing to them. Joe Arnold--sorry about setting you up to take the heat in the special survival school training, but Hans Minnich put me up to it. No, Hans, I won't sell your jewelry from Thailand on my seminary campus! Has it been almost 30 years?!!

Comments: Every year around this time I like
to reflect on past Christmases,
especially those I was fortunate
to spend with family and friends.
However, one Christmas season always
stands out in my mind - the holiday
season of 1972. While it signified
the beginning of the end of the U.S.
military involvement in SEA, the
LINEBACKER II air campaign clearly
set a benchmark for the use of U.S.
airpower and direct intel support
to aircrews. The courage and sacrifice
of those crews and all who supported
their missions resulted in a success
that brought our POWs home.

As this holiday season of 2001 is upon
us, our resolve as a nation is again
being tested even as we meet with
successes on the battlefield. We who
have served know that our troops still
face great dangers and many challenges
as they continue to confront the
enemies of freedom. I encourage all
to say a prayer for the speedy and
safe return of all the brave men and
women serving our nation in this
war against terrorism.

I'd like to wish you all a very Merry
Christmas. May the New Year bring you
great joy, good health, peace and
prosperity. God Bless America.

Comments: Iwas at NKP, the last year of operation. The squadron moved to Chiang Mai after the shutdown while a couple of us were sent back for more Vietnamese training. Ten weeks into the course, we were all assigned to other languages.
I was always curious what happened to the unit after its foray to the northwest of NKP. The base closure/evacuation passed so quickly that there was little time to say good bye. I left after the unit with no place to officially "sign out."
The site brought back memories!

Comments: Great site. I only hit it once every several months, but it brings back some memories (good and bad). Made some great freinds in those days and spent some great times with the motch rats on BC street. Spent a lot of time before going overseas (San Angelo and Monterrey) with Dick Smart, Charlie Richardson, Larry Miller, Mike, Gene Jackson, Mo Morales, Chuck Stanko, Walt Wege, Woody, Ralph Nocito, Rich Bini, Sauer, Cox and many others. We played a lot of cards and football games. The Air Force even won the base softball season and tournament at the Presidio before leaving the states. You guys remember Bradshaw, a marine, he was the first we knew who died in Nam. In Nam and Kadena; some of my most memorable flights were with, Steve Wempe, Dick McHale and the other "Rats" I'll never forget the Article 15 Pudge and I got from "Kaiser Bill" my last month or how I was able to "pick" my last TDY crew after the officers left that night. All of my best friends were on that last crew and we made sure no assholes were with us. One of the best times to recall was my last "champagne flight" where we all got blitzed and said goodbye. "WE WERE NUTS" :, I'll be back. Keep up the great job.

I was on my way into the city to meet with a client on 9/11/011, saw the smoke from the first airplane strike, and watched the explosion from the second airplane strike on the World Trade center as we drove towards the Lincoln Tunnel. The stories I've heard from people I know are stories of incredible horror, luck, and heroism. Bless all of the victims, their families and the heroic rescue workers. Bless all of the men and women now called upon to exact our retribution upon this desicable enemy.

Afdter the base commander got rid of me, I went to NSA and left to work for Bendix with NSA, then with NASA. Comments: IFEL 1957, Suitland Md. 1957, Shu Lin Kou 1958, Fort Meade 1959 and out in 1960. My life has been really dull since then. Great to relive memories of sweating out the "cut" at IFEL (every marking period, a few of the people at the bottom of the class got sent back to Kelly AFB). Then on to Taiwan to sweat out whether we were going to be invaded in 1958. Three months of monsoon weather in Lin Kou (red mud up to my knees) mixed in with trips to "Sin Alley" and Bei T'ou for fun. A lot of fun memories. Also coming back to "the land of the Big PX" in 1959 with tears in my eyes - so happy to be back in the land of the free after getting a taste of living in a police state for 14 months.

Comments: Great site! Saw some pictures I hadn't seen before and they brought back lots of memories. Keep up the good work. Spent a lot of time at the 24th while flying with the 88th. Spent some time with Rivet Top in Korat but mostly flew RC130's and RC135's. Moved on to Europe from here and flew RC130 over there with the 16th out of Rhein Main in early 70's. Returned to the Far East to the 6922nd, the 6926th and the 6921st before going back to the States and retiring in 1981.

Comments: The recent incident involving the Navy P3 and the Chinese fighters brings back memories of our missions in the Gulf of Tonkin. North Vietnam on your West, China to your North, and Hainan Island to your East. Never knew from which direction the migs might pop up. My thoughts and prayers go out to the crew being held on Hainan Island by the Chinese. I pray for their safe return. But for the will of God, it could have been one of us 30 years ago.

Comments: I've searching trying to find friends and acquaintances from the "old Days" with little luck until I came upon the fantastic site. It really brought back a lot of memories (mostly good ones) from NKP and Kadena AFB. I've kept in contact, until recently, with a few guys and some of the language teachers from El Paso. I can still see alot of faces, but can no longer put names to all of them. I was a very tall guy with blond hair, blue eyes and wore glasses if you don't remember. Comments: I tried once before to make an entry here but couldn't get in. So, I sent
an e-mail to a lot of folks trying to
explain what hit me when I first saw the site.
My fondest memories would be difficult to share, the worst memories will remain locked away. Having viewed the list of honorable persons on the locator page, I was awestruck at how quickly the images and the faces flashed through my mind. Equally striking were the memories of the tremendous courage of all in the performance of duties as they worked
diligently and faithfully to accomplish each mission during turbulent times. "Unsung heroes" and "silent warriors" are only a couple of terms that come to mind. Yet these terms do not clearly define the nature of the experience nor do they offer proper comfort to those who, through unrecognized personal sacrifices, made such outstanding and siginificant contributions. Life is short and sometimes not fair, yet to
have been blessed enough to have been associated with so many people who served with such honor makes me proud and humble.
I salute you all for your service to this great nation of ours and for
jobs well done.

Comments: I arrive At NKP.With the compass flag/comfy gator package from LTV later E-Systems now Raytheon on a 141
When we arrived the 6908 only had about
10 or 12 people from the 90th TDY to help, unload the aircraft and help install the ground floor I think I was to stay at NKP for 30 days and return to Texas. But I stayed in NKP from july 71
till june 74 when we took out the gator floor and shipped it back to the Land of Big BX I was the civ that worked on the gator and had the Green truck that most of the 08 road back from the bus stop to the base at some time. I was there so long I think I know most of the war storys from
the snack bar to the soft ball game with the 10 gallons of screw-drivers and saw all of the flights(203's) on the gator floor.

Comments: I was the first airman of the 6990th. To this day I don't understand how I was chosen to fly down from Yokota first. I still have fond memories of the food on Okinawa. The Cat Eyes Resturant was the best. Is there still a 6990th SQ on Okinawa?

Comments: As I live and breathe, I cannot tell you how many 203's I've heard from since entering my name to this web site. However, I know that out of 55 people, plus or minus a few, I've heard from less than ten who were in 5N and 6N Vietnamese Classes 30 years ago. In fact, it was thirty years ago almost to the day that a group of groggy, dressed in class A blues, rode the bus from San Antonio to El Paso in the wee hours of the morning, and got off in the middle of the desert with the sun shining and their minds reeling from being on an Army Post with Air Force Training Facilities. By the way, wasn't there a picture taken of our graduating classes. If anyone knows, I'd love to get a copy!

Keep up the good work! Thanks for creating this site so those of us polyglots could share in the freshness of our youths and the treasure of our contributions overseas and in the states.

Comments: I served as a "291" in the 6994th scty sq det 2, Pleiku AB RVN from Oct 1967 to Oct 1968. Also was TDY at Ton Son Nhut when Tet occurred. Wound up having to stay an extra month there, so I was there during January and February 1968 plus probably a little bit of Dec and a little bit of March. Hoping to hear from friends I was stationed with either in Viet Nam or possibly in the 6917th - my other duty station during my Air Force Career. Thank you for your service to our country.

Comments: Stationed at the 6989th Radio Sq. Mobile at Misawa, Japan 60-62. Was a non-morse intercept type. Worked w/a a lot of great 202s (Don Boyd-Russian linguist that I still keep in touch with was one). Wish I would of saved my USAFSS patch as well as my Trick 2 baseball hat. Any one out there have an extra patch I'd love one. Lots of great memories of duty in the Far East. After Misawa did a tour as an Instructor back at Goodfellow and a short TDY stent w/NSA during Cuban Missle Crisis. That was fun to say the least. Discharged in spring of 63 and on to college. Taught highschool biology a few yrs., picked up MS degree and then off to U. of Montana for Ph.D. Then in 74 did a two yr. tour w/Mich. State Police as a Forensic Scientist. Then in 76 got a commission w/the U.S. Navy to do tropical medicine research all over the world. Favorite tour was in Panama training docs how to diagnose and treat tropical diseases like malaria as well as how to survive in the jungle environment and rappell out of choppers and down cliffs. Retired when Clinton was elected and have been hunting and fishing ever since. Love reading the stories of members who have posted on this site. I salute all you USAFSS types. What we need is a reunion somewhere. By the way, no one at the Naval Security Group Activity in Misawa recalls that the USAFSS was ever there and we owned the original "plank" as far as I know.
