The Bur Oak of the Black Hills

This oak is common in the eastern deciduous hardwood forests, but it extends into the Black Hills and northeastern corner of Wyoming. It has leaves that are 4 to 10 inches long, with a rounded lobes, often with one especially deep indentation on each side. The large acorns, often an inch or more across, have a "bur" or fringe around the cup edge. The scientific name is Quercus macrocarpa
