It is thought by many that crystalline
glazes were originally an accident. Ancient Chinese oil-spot glazes from
the Sung Dynasty (AD 960-1279) contained small, most likely, unintentional
crystals. Crystalline glazing as we know it today began in the 19th century
and became popular during the Art Nouveau movement. The expense and complexity
of this special glaze has proven to be a deterring factor in mass production.
Therefore these beautiful pieces remain the creations of clay artists
and studio potters. Click here for more
