IN THE BLACK
Natalie unlocked her apartment door, happy that Sidney would be at the vet until tomorrow. Nick had promised to paint that orange wall while she was in Chicago. Walking inside, she clicked on the light switch. Nothing. It was still dark. She used the door frame for reference, then banged her shin on . . . furniture? The light, when she found it, was filtered through a black screen, setting off the black on black wallpaper, the black carpeting, the black ceiling and the stainless steel couch and chairs that had replaced her old furniture. Stumbling to the phone, she dialed. "Yeah, Nick Knight, I'm--" "Nick, pick up. It's Nat." A sleepy voice answered, "Welcome back. How was your--?" "Get over here. Now." "Now?" He yawned. "The sun just rose, Nat. Isn't it . . . okay?" "You haven't seen it? The chains I can use when it snows--" "Chains?" "But the whips are a bit much--" "Whips?" " I think that's a bondage mask--" "I'm on my way." Slamming the receiver in the cradle, Natalie picked up a card from the table--'Interiors By Alma'--and crushed it in her fist.
