Moose was a wonderful cat I lived with from 1995 until his death in 2002. He was a big black-and-white Maine Coon with the softest, silkiest fur imaginable. But what most set him apart from other cats I've known was his surprisingly affectionate presence and the way he spent so much time doing that cat-Buddha thing, sitting on his carpet castle and opening and closing his eyes in the traditional bedroom kitty eyes fashion.

Moose's sweetness and his Buddha-thing were what inspired me to write about him to my friend Sherry and others in Cafe Utne's Absurd forum. I imagined him in his wisdom ruminating about life and relationships and so forth. I still miss him.

Moose Tells About Himself

Craig: I thought some of the cats and their humans would like to know more about you. Tell about yourself.

Moose <looking out window>: Well, I've always been more comfortable with humans, as you know. I once thought about moving to Kansas. I notice that if you sit and watch long enough, the time stops going places and just sits there looking at you.

Craig: What things do you like to do?  What's your favorite food?

Moose: Fishies. There's a game you can play with those birds out there under the tree. I can show you.

Craig: Do you have to put one in your mouth first?

Moose: No. You lay down on the roof of the car with the bird and talk. You'd never put it in your mouth. It's a talking game. You think of a word, like maybe "itchybuttslide", and see who says it first, you or the bird.

Craig <grinning>: You don't do things like chase balls of yarn and bat mice around, do you? What do you do?

Moose: I sniff them to make sure they're taking good care of themselves. Did you ever notice that mice laugh when you do that?

Craig <giggling>: I haven't done that.

Moose: Oh yeah. Everything laughs from time to time. You can smell it when trees are laughing. When people sit still, plants take a leak. Then they giggle. The plants are too nervous to take a leak when people are up and around, so they mostly do it at night.

Craig: How do you know these things, Moose Man?

Moose: Love. It clears the air so you can smell things easier. I love you.

Craig:  I love you too, Moose man.

Moose Reports From The Other Side

Craig: Moose Man, what's the story behind the butter, lemons and sugar?

Moose: Well, you can smell them when Sherry sends things to you. Or when BART flies her around the back yard. Or when you're watching the little shiny floaty things when the sun comes through the window. People's bellies. Stuff like that.

Craig: People's bellies?

Moose: Yeah, when people fly around the yard their bellies shine and it comes through the window in flashes. You can hear them laughing. Birds laugh too when that happens.

Craig: Birds? I've never heard a bird laugh.

Moose: They crack up when they see people flying around the back yard with their bellies flopping around and lighting up.

Craig: It cracks you up too, then?

Moose: Yeah.

Craig: Moose, is everything OK since you, uh, *changed*?

Moose: Yes. I'm learning why people's nose make that little whistling sound when they're asleep. I found out that it's a little song their noses sing. I'm learning the song.

Craig: What's it about?

Moose: Usually, it's about the things they wish for the most. But they don't even know they're singing it. I hear you singing that song really loud sometimes at night. Made the birds crack up. That's the song.

Craig: I love you, Moose.

Moose: I love you too.
